Kawhia Motel

My family and I enjoyed our two nights stay in unit 7 – the house. I was overwhelmed with how well equipped the unit was, with PLENTY of space for the whole family and bang smack in the middle of town. The locals were super friendly and the playground across the road was a bonus!

Nice basic rooms and very clean. Manager is helpful and friendly. Can't beat the location! Right in the Kawhia township by wharf and shops. Would recommend for a couple of days - or long weekends away.

Pleasant stay. Stayed in unit 3. It consisted of a double and single bed, shower, kitchen area with microwave and fridge, tv with digibox and had free wifi. 

It had lots of parking spaces and had multiple tables and chairs outside the rooms. 

They offer free use of their kayaks and spades to use to dig hot pools at Ocean Beach.

Incredible Value for Money - we'll be back!

Great Spot

Not having been to NZ before or flown that far we booked this place to stay in for the first night
It is off the beaten track so far in fact people although polite and welcoming did say “what are you doing here”
It is lovely and a run down the coast set us up for a sense of the beautiful scenery we would continue to see
The motel though is a bit 60’s we would recommend taking insect repellant as the big screens are a bit past their sell by date
I would go back but it is quite Funky” in an unstylish sort of way
The boat club does great food and is a great place to go

This off the beaten track

This motel would be great if it had a bit of money spent on it. The location is picturesque and the manager is welcoming and personable. But the switchboard in our unit kept popping the overload button, even though the electric jug was the only appliance being used. Hot water in the shower was either VERY hot or lukewarm. The hotplate didn't work, so it was good to have a working electric fry pan provided. We would love to go back to Kawhia in the summer, but would look for other accommodation.

Very tired

Don't use this place it's a rip off, It is old and tired. The windows don't close because the latches are broken and or just not on the window. The heat pump doesn't work and it is not worth what the asking for for hire. The blankets are as thin as the sheets. The shower door doesn't close and it was cold.

Not good and when you complain the dont respond to phone calls and or emails

It looks as if nothing has been done to the motel since it was built in the 1950’s (except new sheets).

To say that the place is tired only gives a glimpse of the problems. It needs gutting and new furniture, electrics and drapes. Basically it’s backpacker standard but charging motel prices. 

On the plus side the lady who met us was friendly and helpful. 

Kawhia has great charm but there are not many options for accommodation. Give this one a miss unless you are desperate.

Overpriced and in desperate need of TLC

Accommodation had been booked several weeks in advance for my mother, sister and her two children to attend a family reunion. The man who spoke to my mother advised no deposit was required.

She rang to confirm the booking the week before the reunion and was advised by a different man that the booking was in place. He also advised about local shopping and take away options.

When they arrived there was no one on site so they rang the phone number provided. A lady then advised there was no booking!

On returning home my mother phoned the motel and was advised by the man who answered the phone that he would get someone to call her back that day. Three days later still waiting for a response. Very very disappointing. Do not recommend at all!!

Wanted to score '0' but scoring system means we had to give them a '1'.

Appalling Service

The motel room was very clean and a great position with sea views. Unfortunately the wifi did not work and the room was super cold. There is a heat pump however it did not heat all the unit. Luckily we were travelling with woolen blankets!

Over priced and bring your own heater!

Only good thing about the place was the Local ex manager of the facility who helps out the owner with bookings. The water pressure for the shower doesn't exsist, you would have a better shower under the kitchen sink tap. Also no hot water. 

Would never stay there again.
