229 reviewsWe were headed to Wellington and decided to visit Whanganui in the late morning. Was captivated by the style and architecture of many buildings and found this gorgeous heritage hotel. Pretending to be a guest I walked the hallways and absorbed all the history on offer. Visited the attached Irish bar and restaurant and was happily surprised at the menu. Amazing; it was superb. Heard the tale of how the hotel acquired new owners just before covid hit and the financial burdens that followed. Asked to see the cheapest room for a couple and ended up staying. Was $99, 1 night, key card entries, queen bed, private bathroom, coffe station & fridge, wardrobe, table & chairs. If I were to change anything, it would be the length of time I stayed and done more exploration in the hotel. Personally, that hotel has more character than some resorts I've stayed in. Especially loved the iron staircase and long chandelier. I absolutely love this hotel. Our stay was comfortable, quiet and satisfying.
