We stayed her for only one night as we transited across the South Island, and we were so glad to have chosen this rather than an other motels. The location is brilliant with only a short walk to central, and an equally short stroll to the Street eateries. The room was very clean and comfortable, and well-equipped for breakfast preparation. It was also delightfully quiet for an inner city motel, having both double glazing and blackout curtains. We'd be very happy to stay here again.

Quiet, comfortable, perfect location

I had booked two rooms for 5th August 2021 on arrival I was told my friend who was on crutches wouldn't be able to access the room as there was no lift. I said in that case we would need to cancel. Immediately I was asked to pay 80.00  cancellation fee which I did. Normally I would have challenged this however we were in the area of the TAB and I did not feel comfortable with the cliental there. Also there was a note on the bar stating that if you had a meal you had to pay in cash interesting. The next day I received an email from booking.com querying why I was a no show   as the Railway Hotel had informed them I was a no show.

Ripped off

This place should not be advertising or even taking in travellers.  

We left after a couple of hours.

The rooms are small and smell you have a small sink and the bathrooms are at the end of the hallway which are a disgrace. 

There are Permanent residents living there who have mental health issues who are walking the corridors yelling and screaming and attempting to get into your rooms.

I don’t usually write negative reviews like this but be warned this place is not fit to stay at.

Worst Hotel Ever

My expectations were low, however this hotel exceeded them. The smell of this place is harrowing! Like moth balls mixed the the most rotten breath! Noise here carries, so when a load of guests came in at midnight, shrieking and slamming doors, there was no sleeping through it. The manager made no effort to stop the noise. 

The only pro: The bedding and towels were clean and white.

Puts the grey into Greymouth

We stayed for one night as it was priced at the lower end of the scale and according to the description on the booking site, it had all the simple amenities we required. 
The staff walked us to our room upon checking in at the side of the bar.
If first impressions are a guide we should have walked away when we saw the external condition of the building (but we didn’t). 
The staircase to the accommodation was not a good first impression, with a combination of part timber and carpet in places undergoing some repair. The tilt on the bedroom floor indicates that this old building is in need of serious work and it's fitness for occupation should be questioned.

The room was very clean with new carpet and was freshly painted. It was extremely small with a washbasin, bedside table a small robe, and it was tight for walking past the bed.
Clearly an old building will look it’s age, but in our room there was a very tatty desk lamp with the shade cover falling apart, and surely  something more tasteful than ancient magazine pages could be used to cover the frosted glass panels of the ladies toilet and bathroom doors. It was very ordinary.
The jug, fridge and microwave are shared amenities and were located along the corridor, not in the room as we mistakenly inferred from the description.
The other guests were friendly and courteous and it was a quiet night.
We would not stay here again and believe we were misled by the room description.

I wasn't expecting a huge amount for the price, but I clearly stated I was traveling with a young child and needed a quiet place. What I got was having to enter a public bar to check in, a set of stairs and room which were uneven and off level (the bed sloped toward the head!), and the constant noise of bad music from the bar below!!!

Not at all as described...

This hotel was chosen on the basis of its location, namely very cose to the Greymouth railway station. This was because we were arriving on the Trans Alpine Express from Christchurch for an overnight stay and we did not wish to add taxi costs to the overnight expense.
The entrance was via what appeared to be a side entrance, leading to the bars where we met up with a staff member who checked on our booking and confirmed all was in order. The staff member was very polite and helpful, taking us out to show us how to enter the hotel  via a separate lockable door to access our room.
We had to negotiate a flight of stairs, only partly carpeted, to find our room.The room was not very large, with a double bed and small television set, and a washbasin. Toilets and showers were in a corridor next to our room. There was a separate ladies toilet. The bed was not comfortable, indeed rather hard, there was substantial noise from the showers coming through the walls, not appreciated late at night. No meals were available though we were refered to another hotel several doors closer to the station which was serving meals.
Tea and coffee facilities were located down the corridor, but no water on hand. This made it necessry to carry ones own supply to the facility, being a hot water jug.
The room did not have windows that opened, meaning that after a sunny afternoon, the room was hot, and remained so most of the night. 
The best I can say was that we did not sleep well that night, but we were very close to the railway station.
