Pavlova Palace

Had a great stay in Dunedin for a concert, was nice and spacious inside the room, with easy check in and check out. Very close to town, bars and restaurants. Would recommend to friends and family and stay again 😊

Great Spot 

Stayed with daughter in the cottage for 2 nights.  Rambling old place, could do with a bit more TLC.  Room was nice, had been renovated.  Excellent wifi but then it is Gigatown.  Shower doors did not close properly.  Kitchen fridge very smelly.  Main problem was the noise on the deck at night.  Notices say clearly quiet from 10.30pm in hot tub and on deck.  Woken up at 3am by group of 8 chatting on the deck and despite asking them to be quiet twice, this continued till 5am.  No staff member there to care.  Second night same thing happened at 12.30am.  Other people said they had to wear earplugs to sleep there because of this noise.  No sign of any pavlova as promised.  Staff member seemed pretty disinterested.

Close to city  but noisy

Arrived to check in - pressed the button as directed. No response. Waited 20 minutes pushing the button and no response so had to ring. 
Stayed in the cottage out back which was run down and shabby. Was being renovated (builder was super nice!). 
Floor is uneven, walls are just plywood, lots of unfinished walls, roofs, floors. 
Fellow guests enjoyed the hot tub then left small pond of water in the toilet. Stayed up late yelling goodnight at each other in the deck area until midnight. This carried on for a solid 20 minutes even though they were aware of others sleeping. 
No pavlova as stated on the website which was disappointing. Not friendly and more like a student flat. Not a lot of parking on street. One vehicle parked out front had cobwebs on it so obviously not used but taking up parking space for guests. 
Bed was warm enough so not all bad. Managed to sleep after the others had finally gone to bed. Probably won’t be back but suited for the night we stayed. 


Not great 

On the hill above Dunedin this house is located in a former well to do area providing sweeping views over the city and harbour from some of the upper level bedrooms. The bedrooms are clean and tidy, well presented. Our group had a discrepancy with the amount charged over the original quotation and once this was discussed with the manager was resolved quickly and fully refunded. Top marks to the management for this aspect. A number of other areas though require greater oversight. The kitchen is appalling! The best time to use it is just after the staff has cleaned – there is no insistence by management to ensure that the guests clean and tidy after their use, leaving the kitchen with the look and feel of rough student digs. The stove appears as though it has never been cleaned since installation. Their information states that there are 39 beds available, but there is only 2 wc’s to service this number and 3 showers. The Government building department recommends that for hostels there should be 5 unisex wc’s – this would avoid the anxieties of the mornings. The showers provided a good flow of hot water although a larger change area would be preferable. This backpackers recently suffered a fire in an attached building, prompting this reviewer to seek out smoke alarms for guest safety. I found one in the dining room and there are marks in the stairwell where one had been. Overall this accommodation has the potential to be a very good backpackers with more facilities, a renovation of the kitchen and a willingness to demand that guests leave the facilities clean and tidy after use.

Good Potential but unrealized

There was very few people staying here when I was.  More like an old B&B than a hostel.  Would need a bit of TLC but ok value for money.  Never got any pavlova barely even seen any staff dont think they hang around much
