Wilderness Lodge - Lake Moeraki

This was one of the absolute highlights of our 1 month trip through New Zealand. The place is situated in the middle of a natural reserve and prime forest, all within walking distance. The rooms are comfortable and quiet, and well proportioned. Anne and Gerry are perfect hosts, friendly, knowledgable and passionate. Don't miss doing the guided walk with Gerry, as he is an encyclopedia of knowledge, and full of enthusiasm. We only have one regret, we wished we could have stayed longer.

I loved my stay at the Wilderness Lodge.  Upon arrival Anne, the lodge co-owner, gave me a tour of the property, and she and the staff were all extraordinarily pleasant and knew me by name for my entire two night visit.  The work that Anne and Gerry have done to protect the rainforest and make it accessible to guests is amazing - I hiked each of the trails multiple times, and Gerry's trail guides made every fern and tree all the more interesting.  The two (free) guided walks that Gerry led were highlights of the visit; he is so passionate that I could probably listen to him talk about lichens for an hour.  Both the rainforest walk that he led and the glow worm walk were great, and I can't imagine anyone being more enthusiastic about sharing knowledge of this special area.

Aside from the rainforest, the lodge itself is excellent.  Despite being off the grid the power, internet, hot water and everything else worked as well as you would find in any city hotel.  Dinner each night was a delicious three course meal, and breakfast each morning included cooked options as well as fruit and pastries.  The room was quiet, in great condition, and extremely comfortable.

If I'm ever back in New Zealand I will most definitely return to the Wilderness Lodge.  It was a great nature destination, the hosts are both inspiring human beings, and the stay has been a highlight of my trip to New Zealand.

What a treat!  Family of 4 stayed in 2 rooms for 2 nights and enjoyed every minute of it.  Several very interesting guided hikes around the property, including a great/informative late-night stroll led by the proprietor (Jerry) to see glow worms, the night sky, etc.  Excellent meals, very friendly staff, and very comfortable rooms/facilities.  Anne is most helpful in the lodge and coordinated whatever we needed.  Highly recommend.

Perfect place on the westcoast of New Zealand. We had the rooms with view of the river, our own terrasse facing the river. Beautiful place. Free washing machines and dryers (very helpful). Cosy living room with large fireplace and lots of books to have a drink and chat. Very very friendly and helpful staff. Ann and Gerry are present and help you. It's all very personel. The tours are great and very interesting.

Absolutely had a fabulous time, so good we didn’t want to leave. Hosts Gerry, Anne and their team are so welcoming. The natural environment is stunning but what sets this place apart is the additional activities enabling guests to learn about the local fauna, flora and history. The food, accommodation and surroundings are all stunning. A must stay for nature lovers, highly recommended.

I have been to the Wilderness Lodge before and it always exceeds my expectations. This time I was part of a small group doing a photography workshop with New Zealand Photography Workshops. The hosts, Anne and Gerry, go out of their way to ensure that your stay is both memorable, in terms of location, comfort and delicious food, and also, educative about the location and its flora and fauna. The highlight for me is the guided Tawaki penguin tour. Watching these beautiful animals in their natural habitat is fantastic.

Returning after 40 years when I came here as a young child from the moment we stepped into the
Lodge we were surrounded by  forests and birdsong - beautiful place and beautiful hosts who are so welcoming and passionate about their piece of paradise and conservation.
Staying for 4 days/three nights you could not ask for more - cosy warm rooms with wonderful views , delish meals, so many sights to take in ,. We took every opportunity to go  on the daily tours with Gerry and learn so much gaining a much wider appreciation of nature in an untouched part of New Zealand . Sitting on the beach watching endangered clumsy and delightful Fiordland crested penguins was simply a once in a lifetime experience - - a labour of love for Gerry  and Anne .

We stayed at the Wilderness Lodge during the first week of the 2023-2024 season and enjoyed learning so much about this part of the West Coast from Gerry and Anne. The accommodations were especially relaxing, it was our favorite accommodation on our three-week trip. We took took advantage of all of the opportunities to get outdoors - we kayaked Lake Moeraki and hiked the trails on the property as well as others nearby. The meals were particularly delicious after a week of pub food along the West Coast.

A highlight was seeing twelve Fiordland Crested Penguins with Gerry! This is a truly special place in New Zealand and we were so glad to have learned about it. 

This is  an experience you will never be able to have elsewhere. Anne and Gerry are the consumate hosts with friendly helpful and caring staff who cannot do enough for you. Their unique approach to wildlife conservation in combination with providing lifetime experiences for all their guests no matter what age or ability is far beyond any thing I have ever experienced  and should be a model for operators everywhere. I went for penguins - and came away with the most authentic incomparable experience of all NZ flora and fauna possible. And when this is combined with superb accommodation food and wine - I run out of superlatives. Long may they continue this wonderful tradition. If the thought of Fiordland Crested Penguins, or any penguin has ever crossed your cerebral cortex, don't wait any longer - just book.

We went for the penguin experience (& we weren’t disappointed!) but there is so much more to this place. The setting is beautiful, the lounge area very comfortable, the food delicious & plentiful, the bar is always open!
We had a beautiful river view room which was perfect too.
We came away rested & with a new wealth of knowledge about the local flora & fauna.
