Sleeping by Van Beelen

We recently completed our third stay at Sleeping by van Beelen. The accommodation consists of several neighbouring houses which have been converted into rooms/studios. We stayed in the B&B section, in a little studio on the top floor which had everything we needed. The beds were comfortable, the ensuite had plenty of towels and toiletries provided, and the kitchenette was well-equipped and useful. It was all very clean. The only downside for some people is that in common with many Dutch properties, the stairs were very steep but there were sturdy handrails. Due to Covid restrictions the breakfast room was closed on our last two stays, but this time we had a crate of food delivered outside our door every morning. This worked very well for us, there was plenty of choice and enough to make a picnic for lunch! Yogurt, muesli, milk, orange juice, boiled eggs, ham and cheese, tomatoes, fruit and an assortment of bread and pastries, with jams and butter. A few teabags and some coffee pods. We would be happy for this to continue, if it is cost-effective for the management. The room was not cleaned every day due to covid restrictions, but we could leave rubbish outside the door and request clean towels etc. if needed. There was a vacuum cleaner on the landing that we could use. The B&B is well-located only a few minutes walk from the Boulevard and coast/beach. There is a huge underground car park hidden by the sand dunes nearby. In the other direction is a small Co-op shop, and there are lots of other shops and restaurants nearby. (The "hotel" does not provide evening meals). There is plenty of walking in the town or along the coast, and it is ideal for cycling. Leiden is a short drive away, as is the Corpus human biology museum. It is also a short drive from the Keukenhof gardens, famous for tulip displays in Spring. The staff and management are very friendly and speak English. There is now an electronic key fob system for entry to the building. Since we were arriving late they sent us the code for the number pad by email and our room key was waiting inside. All in all, B&B van Beelen is an ideal place to stay for a relaxed and informal visit to Katwijk. We are looking forward to our next trip.
