I’ve stayed here a few times and I’m always happy. When I say it’s ‘old school’ I mean that it is solid with quality fittings and good design. Not all bling. 

Of course it’s also bit dated but I can live with that.

Old school in the best way

Our time here was brief, and the staff were helpful and friendly. It is a great location, and the rooms are tidy. It is fairly basic, certainly not flash. But if you are not planning on lounging in your room, it is all you will need. 

All you need, but not much more

The hotel looks a bit worn, especially compared with the nearby sparkling new Grand Plaza.

Its one advantage is the restaurante, which serves alcohol, unlike the Grand Plaza.

My waiter presented my change in coins, anticipating a healthy tip.

Far better for food is the friendly and popular A Portuguesa, about 1km away on Av do Trabalho.

This place was not horrible, but it was extremely overpriced for what it offered. The room was small, somewhat dark and dreary inside, not terribly clean, and smelled of rancid butter. The staff were kind enough, the wifi worked well, and breakfast was pretty good, but it was not worth  55USD/night. We stayed here for one night, and then switched to the nearby Residencial Universo, which was much nicer, cleaner, and less expensive.

Girasol Nampula -- overpriced!

The hotel is more known as Girassol, which makes things a bit confusing.  It looks like a business hotel, and is one of the few options in Nampula town. The quality of the hotel is lower than proclaimed, although it is still quite decent. Staff is really helpful to the best of their abilities. 
The free wifi did not really worked farther from the reception area, and kept on disconnecting. The location at the 4th floor of a business centre is not very convenient, especially since the restaurant/breakfast was in the 1st floor, with only one elevator in common use with every other office in the building.

Business style hotel

It has been 2 years since I have had a meal at the Girrosol, the restaurant attached to the hotel and down stairs, last time it was just adequate. This time was way better, cleaner, brighter, more attentive better trained staff and most importantly way better food. A bit pricey for soup, a steak and a ginger ale but well worth it. 

Getting a good meal in Nampula is no easy task.


Dinner: A pleasant Surprise

This is a very comfortable Hotel in a central location opposite the cathedral. The main peculiarity is that it occupies the fourth floor of a commercial building with the restaurant and breakfast room on the first floor. The rooms are modern, simple, clean and well maintained. There is formidable air conditioning that can make them quite chilly. The shower in my room worked perfectly but was basic and seemed rather cut price. Restaurant elegant and well served.
