In 2019 we had the most magnificent idyllic holiday at a resort in Linga Linga, Mozambique.
This holiday was booked through Sandown Travel and Mozambique Tours.

2020 : We wanted to return and approached our booking once again through the aforementioned booking agencies where Hotel Tofo Mar was suggested and while we booked knowing it was expensive, we trusted our suppliers and believed it would be worth it.

Unfortunately we contracted Covid in December 2020 and didn't make our vacation. However, the hotel transferred it and we eventually arrived in December 2021.

Prior to our arrival, there was considerable communication between myself and the manager with regards to beach closures and other such things and we even paid extra to shift our dates into ‘high season’. 

On arrival, we were the ONLY guests at the hotel, which was pretty much closed. (Not even an umbrella was out.) We were `reminded` by the only member of staff on duty that the bar and restaurant were closed. This was news to us- certainly not a reminder.

The room was lovely except for the holes in the mosquito net. 
Breakfast was shocking, prepared by the man who had checked us in. (The concierge now chef – no fault of his own).
The manager. Alexandra Amaro, was unreachable as she was in Portugal. 

The experience at the hotel was bleak. No restaurant, no bar, no other guests, no staff and certainly no holiday vibe.

During the entire process of booking and re-booking and travelling to Mozambique and, in fact our return to South Africa, the YouTube video on the hotel’s website depicted a very different hotel to reality and was only removed after insistence by ourselves as false advertising. 

Needless to say we sought alternative accommodation having slept there for one night and paid a sum of approximately 50 000 ZAR plus the hefty change of date for high season.

After emails between ourselves and Mozambique Tours, Sandown Travel and Manager Hotel Tofo MAr, Alexandra Amaro- no refund, responsibility, accountability has been taken.
Hence I have resorted to ensuring no –one else experiences this unfortunate costly experience.

Disappointing beyond!

I have just spent two weeks in this wonderful hotel, directly on the beach. The view out of the window in the morning still leaves you breathless after 2 weeks.
The staff is very pleasant and helpful.
I can fully recommend...

Best location! Super service, absolutely recommendable!

The property is on prime location, literal steps to the ocean and for a sunrise/sunset chaser like myself the location was perfection. You can also easily enjoy the stars at night on the verandas or right on the beach if you so wish. It's also located at the centre of town, so it's easy access to restaurants, shops, market, etc. I would suggest a room with sea view as you will hear the ocean rather than the city view rooms where you hear the parties/music. 
The rooms were clean and supplies replenished daily. The showers had good water pressure and hot water, the only issue was the shower drains did not drain well. The property also has a generator which is nice as I was able to work even when the rest of the town & the city where our office is had no electricity. The only thing is that they really need to improve their wifi access on the property - for those of us on business visits, the wifi rarely worked - no matter where you were on the property. The included breakfast spread was always delicious and the kitchen/waiting staff were very accommodating if I requested my own items to be prepared or preparing a take-away for days I had to leave early for work. 
Clara, Laura & José at reception were always very caring and accommodating, to the point that on a Saturday where I didn't go down for breakfast Clara came to check if everything was okay and why I hadn't eaten yet by noon. Louisa, Danielson and the kitchen chef and others whom names I can't remember were always caring, kind and very accommodating to any needs/requests. I was able to leave my luggage at the hotel on days that I travelled for work to other locations which made life so much simpler. They always gave me the best rooms and best rates during my stay. It was a great place to rest and relax after busy work days, I felt spoiled by the staff. I look forward to seeing everyone again on my next visit!

Excellent Location & Phenomenal Staff!

I've been a couple of times to Tofo during the last decade. It was always a pleasure. Its such a fun little town with so many internationals. Excellent diving and good food and an amazing beach. This time I wanted a nice hotel with a sea view. And Tofo Mar has the best view; its really on the beach. I loved the very friendly staff Thank you Paulo and excellent assistance of Laura!, the architecture of the place, the functional - enough electricity plugs!- beautiful bath room and the overall charm. Its not a 5 star hotel and for sure it can use some paint but I like more a genuine place, thats for me also the charm. Its perfect for individual travelers as well as for families. And it has a very good quality-price and the best deals dive wise with Diversity Scuba. I highly recommend both

Best Sea View and Excellent Staff!

The property has prime location on Tofo beach and right in the centre of town.  As we are here between Christmas and New Year it is very noisy with loud music pumping every night.  (Not sure if it is usually like this?)

Other than the fantastic location, there is not much else I can say positive about the property.  It lacks charm and atmosphere and although looks attractive in the photos, is pretty tired and grotty.

The bathrooms look like they have been renovated fairly recently, but there are tiles missing off the walls and the bath/shower area is grungy.  The shower leaks badly - and I'm not talking about a bit of a drip but pools of water on the floor. 
The toilet is really uncomfortable (this is the first time in all my travels that I've reviewed a toilet!) to the point where my 11 year old son could not sit on it without pretty much falling in!!  (So definitely not for those of you who like to read the newspaper while doing your business!!)
The housekeeping is shoddy and we've had to constantly ask for supplies.

The breakfast is OK although they have constantly been running out of items on the menu.  There is a menu of hot food that can be ordered (included in the charge) but nobody told us about this.  We only found out by chance.

The property needs an urgent spruce up starting with a paint and scrub.  The furniture in reception needs replacing too.

In summary, the fantastic location made it worth while but don't expect more than a 3 star hotel for the 5 star price.

Fantastic location but...........

Old-school hotel on the beach. Friendly staff, solid and clean rooms. However needs some management attention that would take it to 5*. The rooms are quite hot (A/C not working well) and very humid, so be prepared to spend time outside in the breeze.

Great location, good rooms, but needs some TLC

Well managed beachfront hotel with wonderful views of beach and ocean, clean and well-furbished rooms and central location in Tofo, just a few feet away from the market and plenty restaurants. Very important to mention ik a place like Tofo, that the showers work perfectly and have constant pressure warm water (which is not a given in town).

The staff is very friendly and go out of their way to make your stay pleasant.

The hotel is owned by the same people that own Diversity Scuba (just 150 meters away) and they offer generous discounts on diving and other activities. So a perfect choice if you plan on diving.

Will definitely return and recommend to friends.

Stayed a week at Tofo Mar Hotel. 
Best location, wonderful views, nice atmosphere, very nice working people. Very easy going. Near everything. And very safe!!! 
To return again with family and friends!!!

Tofo Beach 2019

I spent 4 beautiful days here at Tofo. I literally could have spent all of my days in bed in this hotel with the curtains drawn wide while wistfully listening, and then watching for miles at the bay of surfers, walkers, and divers. But you must go for a lovely swim and a dive or two!! 
I want to give a special thank you to Laura 💕. As a solo traveler, she was so sweet to me!!  I asked her opinion on so many things to what she thought about what I was wearing, and places to go grab a place to eat. 
Loved visiting here!!

Beautiful view!

This colonial-building hotel has all you would need and even more, e.g. swimming pool, bar, restaurant, amazing views, etc and just a few meters from the beach.
The rooms are very spacious, beds super comfortable, very well equipped, beautiful mosaic tiles bathroom and some of the best views of Tofo.
They also have great deals and discounts with Diversity Scuba, giving you the option to go diving, ocean safaris, etc for very competitive prices.
The restaurant also serves great food and breakfast has plenty of different options.
Truly one of the nicest hotels in Tofo!
