Absolutely lovely accommodation, very clean and comfortable.

The family who own it are really friendly and helpful. They also picked us up from the airport, which saved a lot of hassle after a long flight. 

Would recommend to anyone staying in Ulaanbaatar.

Lovely Hostel

We had such an amazing stay at Town Yard Hostel. Gan, Ayohna, and their whole family could not have been more welcoming to us. Even though we came during a quiet time they organised a great couple of days away in the mini-Gobi for us and accompanied us the whole way which was wonderful. They allowed us to share Mongolian New Years lunch with their family which was a very special moment and will certainly not be forgotten. Their extensive knowledge about the country makes for the best recommendations as they have connections all around the place. The hostel itself is very comfortable and Ayonha prepares great breakfasts every morning. It’s close to the city centre and within easy walking distance of all the major attractions. Couldn’t recommend this place enough, it’ll make your trip to Mongolia that bit more special.

Incredible place!

I had a very uncomfortable experience here. The owner was initially very nice and offered to help plan my trip, and wasn’t very pushy, and it was all good. He later convinced me to give him 5k and then another 5k to buy booze so that his wife wouldn’t find out. He was clearly on a bit of a bender. He told me he would take the money he borrowed from me out of the price of the tour he said he would personally take me on. 

Sorry that’s super freaking unprofessional and unethical. I left the hostel without really telling the owners and left my key in my room.

Had a fantastic experience both staying here, with Gan and Oyuna which are one of the best people i have ever met! So friendly towards their guests and always so helpful with everything! Can’t even count the amount of nights I say out smoking and talking about the world with Gan, fantastic experience just staying here. Their son took me and a few others to Gobi for a week, showing something new, completely gorgeous scenery every day. Can’t recommend this place enough, would never go to Ulaanbaatar and NOT stay here! CHOOSE TOWN YARD

Hostel stay and Gobi tour

At first it may be hard to locate this hostel, it seems Mongolians don't number their houses. However, I recognised the red building from the photos and the minute our car stopped Yuna and Gan were at the gate giving us such a warm welcome. 

We only had a short time and Gan made sure to arrange a short tour for us, based on what we wanted to see and what he recommended. His son, Miji was our guide and driver, who by the end of our trip became very good friends. Our 4 day tour was to central Mongolia and every night we stayed with a different nomadic family who were nothing short of hospitable and warm as Gan and Yuna are. I had absent-mindedly forgotten my iphone cable at the first family stay, and Miji made a stop on our drive back to UB so I could get it which I am very so grateful for. Miji was very accommodating to us whenever we wanted to stop midway to take pictures. 

We had such a fantastic beautiful experience that it did not even feel like 4 days, felt like longer. Gan, Yuna and Miji took good care of us when we got back to the hostel where we stayed one more night before flying back home. They treat you like family and this by far trumps everything. 

The rooms are basic but very clean. I'm not fussy either. We first stayed in a 3 bed private room and then a 2 bed private room on our last night. The beds are firm but in comparison to the beds we slept on in the gers, this was a luxury. There are enough power sockets to charge your phones and cameras, something so important for me, a tech savvy city dweller. You get warm showers and yummy eggs and toast breakfast cooked by Yuna in the morning.

The location is in a quiet neighbourhood. Everything is within walking distance in Ulaanbaatar. The Gandan Monastery is a five minute walk away, the State Department Store is about fifteen minutes. I had no problems finding my way around solo when my friend decided to stay in, but then I have a good sense of direction and I like exploring. 

I would definitely stay here again. Already planning to come back to Mongolia with more friends next summer and do a longer tour. Mongolia isn't just about the beautiful scenery but more so about its people. Everyone we met during our stay have been very very kind, you just have to be nice too. A wonderful experience to remember and many more experiences to come!!

Gan and Oyuna were the sweetest hosts! Don't let the outside alley leading to the hostel mislead you - inside the hostel is clean and well taken care of. The blankets were nice and comfortable. Oyuna made sure to keep us updated on whether or not hot water would be available for showering (the water truck had to deliver) and prepared a tasty, basic breakfast of toast, eggs, and tea for us. It was a relief to stay here and clean up after 12 days in the country!

Located on the same street as the Gandan monastery, a short walk to the main square/State Department store.

Great hostel with a sweet family!

I'm not exactly where to start on this review.  Everything was PERFECT!

Owners: Friendly and Helpful
Guesthouse: Clean, secure, conveniently located, comfortable, good breakfast
Amenities: good wifi, flexible tour service with competitive pricing, airport/train station service, breakfast, laundry, hot water....the list goes on!

I spent a total of 4 days at this guesthouse and touring with the owner.  I cannot recommend it enough.  It will be the first place I stop whenever my travels take me back to Mongolia.

Bottom Line:  Stay here.

Fantastic!

Wonderful hostel whose fluent English-speaking owners bend over backwards to help. In the same road as the Gandan monastery (15-minute walk or short bus ride to main square). On the left you see Orkhon 1/2/3/4 and finally Orkhon 5 and a sign for the hostel. Excellent kitchen facilities and free tea. Tasty breakfast. Also runs accomodation at/transport to Terelj national park but unlike every other hostel isn't pushy to get you to use them. Only mini-moan is that laundry is a bit pricy.
