Hostal de la Niebla

I spent three nights here while enjoying the delightful little town of Xalapa. The Hostal is just close enough to everything to be convenient, yet far enough away from the center that it was peaceful and quiet. It was spotlessly clean, and the guy at the front desk - did he ever get to sleep - was so helpful and very friendly. I don't know whether he spoke English. I will definitely stay here when I return

Excellent location. Kind staff. Spotlessly clean. This is where I always stay in Xalapa. Lots of stores and shops just a few yards in any direction. I nice park about 5 min. walk, and an even nicer park 10 min. away. Marimba players across the street. The upper rooms (3rd floor) have skylights. There's a nice patio for eating or talking to people.

This is not a party hostel. You just come here to recuperate from a day full of activities. The amenities, cleanliness, and friendly staff certainly make it easy to do that. I think it's a pretty good hostel considering the low cost of it. I'm surprised there are people giving it low ratings.

I stayed here near the end of my trip to Mexico. I arrived at the hostel sick with both throat and stomach problems, and rested there 4 days. There's a comfortable kitchen for cooking, wifi, clean warm showers, and convenience stores/markets/art galleries/bookstores nearby to keep sick travelers occupied. The staff was friendly. The hostel had enough guests so that I never felt lonely, but wasn't crowded at all.

Clean and straightforward

... my first surprise was on arrival, its not 130 pesos as advertised, but 150, this left me feeling tricked and scammed, not for the money but because they thought it was clever, next was the overall vibe of the place, unlike most 'hostels' this one is completely lacking in atmosphere or ambience, in fact it has the feel of a school, hospital, or convent, finally, the wifi is so weak it's a joke, in this 'day and age' strong wifi is the difference between an average hostel and an excellent one.
