I wanted to inform Hostelworld about illegal activity in one of the hostels listed on your site.  I stayed at Oyster hostel located in Veracruz city, Mexico on April 13, 2022.
I noticed that the lockers located underneath the bunks used a sliding lock and can be easily opened even while locked. I informed the staff about this issue and was told to lock my valuables in a separate locker.

Upon returning to collect my belongings I noticed the locking clasp on the separate locker had been tampered with.  After inspecting I found that a substantial amount of cash was stolen from my backpack. After informing staff of the incident they seemed unconcerned and disinterested.  After discussing with other travelers staying in the dormitory (number 5), I was informed by another guest that other visitors had experienced the same issue - missing cash from the lockers while locked with a padlock.

Since then I have encountered another traveler in a different city who also stayed at Oyster hostel.  He told me he experienced the same phenomenon while staying in Oyster hostel - several hundred dollars went missing from his locker during his stay. 

Yesterday I noticed a fraudulent charge on my credit cards that was stored in my locker while my cash was stolen in Oyster hostel. The thief had taken a picture of my credit card and attempted to purchase something off Amazon.mx.   I have reported this to my credit card company and now need to dispute charges while waiting for a replacement card to be forwarded to Mexico.

I am now totally convinced that the staff in Oyster hostel are working together to steal cash from guests during their stay.  It's not coincidental that both sets of  lockers in the dorm are easily openable while locked, and that at least 3 guests all have had their cash taken.

I have not contacted the local police about this incident as I'm unconfident in my Spanish abilities. And I don't expect they will attempt to locate my stolen cash.

Oyster Hostel thieves in Veracruz Mexico

Excellent guest service and clean facilities, suitable and in good condition, well located as it is two blocks from the Boulevard de Villa del Mar and close to the city center.

Stay for 5 days (29 December to 3 January)

The only Veracruz hostel, cheap in a dorm, 150 pesos with a light breakfast, air-conditioned rooms, average cleanliness, 20 minutes' walk from the aquarium and zoo, not much to eat around.

I won't remember it well.

The location is perfect, the rooms are pretty good, the cleanliness is excellent and the treatment is not bad, Vicky will always be willing to shake hands and even shake hands. :) If you visit Veracruz, this hostel is a super good option for accommodation.

Hostel very close to everything, clean, comfortable bed, (I stay in a room I think of 8 beds) and each bed had a curtain, which made it very private (no vi casi in any hostel that) enchanted me.Viky y Raul very nice, willing to help you with whatever you need, great breakfast, with a nice terrace and good kitchen to cook.

It's a challenge to find a backpackers' hostel in Veracruz but this one is a lifesaver for budget travelers like me. It's a standard hostel with all the basic amenities. It's close to the aquarium where you can take a boat to Cancuncito. Also, it's just 1 block away from Malecon and 15 minute walk to the center. The staff are very friendly. Highly recommended for backpackers.

Friendly staff, basic accommodation

We stayed in this hostel for one night in Veracruz. The property is a 10-minute walk from the centre but on a rather safe road. The rooms are clean and cozy and, although the hostel is not very large, it has a kitchen and a common living room. The pancake breakfast could be improved, however the warmth of the staff and availability make this hostel a great destination for backpackers!

It seems to me just what they charge and what they offer, two nice guys, willing to help if needed, the rooms are small but are great for overnight stays, clean and fresh.

It's pleasant.

We were surprised to find only one hostel in Veracruz. There are not many international tourists in the city and Mexican tourists are said to prefer hotels or casa's. This hostel hence has little to compete with, but still offers maximum effort in service. The couple running the hostel seems very happy and helpful. We slept in a very basic private room with airco, sharing the other facilities. The building is old and the showers basic, but ample. Breakfast was included, nothing special, but provided with a smile. The coffee is good, which is very important to me.. Wifi works, though the strength and reliability varies. Never slept so well on this trip as here, though my night before was in a bus. Can't comment on noise because we sleep with earplugs. All in all very good price / quality ratio!

Your last resort..

Not the best setup for a hostel and it seemed a bit neglected which made sense when I found out the place was been looked after by the hostel owner's mother who let one of the guests treat the dorm like his personal room; when she was checking me in, he was clearly entertaining a woman who was not a guest of the hostel. Facilities were clean but bottom floor with the kitchen and dining had poor lighting. There was a nice rooftop terrace. Breakfast was a crap shot; the first day was nice and hot. the next day it was instant oatmeal. The hostel owner's mother was nice and helpful though. It is a short walk to city center and the malecon and a long walk from the bus station. Solid internet.
