Santo Tomas is a brotherly run hotel that I think is awesome. They are just hidden 5 mins walk from the centro and have an amazing large garden, decent rooms. They are constructing kitchens and launry spaces etc. Very well priced and worth more.

A lovely little hotel hidden in the back

In organizing a Chiapas tour for friends from USA/Canada, we scouted many lodgings in several towns and chose the Santo Tomas for San Cristobal. When we later arrived with the group -- what a surprise! The place was even better than we had expected and everyone was delighted with the rooms, the layout -- about 20 in an L-pattern around a huge treed, grassy open area. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Centro of town, including lively Real de Guadalupe Street is about 10 minutes walk. Despite its traditional appearance, the hotel is just a couple of years old and the restaurant, for example, is open only for special occasions like ours. We also had a breakfast at the historical Na' Bolom museum/hotel a few steps away. Overall, the Santo Tomas provided a great start to our Chiapas adventure.

A hidden gem behind nice walls

we were looking forward staying in this hotel, specially after a 14 hour flight and me being sick with a cold! We arrived late at night and took a cap from the airport to san Cristobal (about 40 more minutes), when we got there NOBODAY OPENED the door of the hotel for us!!, we rang the door bell, knocked really hard doors and windows, one window opened and we started yelling, we did this for like 25 min but nobody came out, how is that a so called "Hotel" has no reception!!!  the whole neighborhood wokedp up except them! all the dogs in the block were barking and the familly who lives in front of the hotel came out, I apologized for the noise and explained the situation they let us use their cell phone because aours did not work, but no one answered!!! eventually because it was so late and we did not know the town this amazing family took us in and offered us a place to sleep. This act of solidarity and kindness shows what kind of people Mexicans are, thanks to this family we did not sleep on the street in our first night. the next day they open at 8:30!, they never apologize and we just canceled the reservation and stay in another place!

I stayed at the Santo Tomas for 3 days this last February and loved it, about a block from Na Balom so it is in a quiet neighborhood...secure parking, large rooms have fireplaces if needed..
I would stay there next trip to San Cristobal.......

Hotel Santo Tomas

We really enjoyed our stay at the Santo Tomas. At first, seeing the listing, I was afraid it was too far out of town. However, it's only a block or so beyond the Museo/Hotel Na Balom. It has very secure and easy parking access; the rooms are very well-appointed with nice decorator touches; and each room has a well-designed fireplace in the corner. Firewood the first night is free and subsequent nights cost 50 pesos. There is a large green area with trees and flowers.

The bed mattress was one of the best, and the blankets were light weaight but very warm: I hate the usual heavy blankets with the nasty fringes. The pillows were comfortable, too.

The rooms have lovely new bathrooms with hair dryer, soap and shampoo, and very hot water. There was even a sturdy American-style toilet seat that didn't wobble! There's a walk-in closet with a skylight, cable TV with a remote, and nice little colonial tables. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the whole property is immaculately maintained.

One reviewer said that there's no store nearby for extra water and snacks, but we did not find this to be the case. The Na Balom is just around the corner for breakfast, should one wish, providing time to be in the Museum without being on a tour; there's a small store up the block for snacks; a lady sells food to go at lunch time also just up the street.

It's an easy walk up the quiet street Calle Comitan by the Na Balom to El Cerrillo Church and Santo Domingo Church and the craft stalls, as well as the city market. Taxis are reasonable should it be extra cold and rainy at night, but then you can look forward to your fireplace, which did a great job warming the pretty room.  We enjoyed staying away from the tourist corridor in a more residential area where we could hear occasional fireworks, goats and chickens in the distance rather than heavy car traffic.

During the winter off-season, the rate is 400 pesos a night, which for the quality of the room and facility is amazing. Firewood the first night is free and subsequent nights cost 50 pesos.

My only caveat is that, despite 3 lovely iron light fixtures in the sleeping area, it was a little too dark to read. Bringing a portable reading lamp or a stronger light bulb would be a good idea, but this is a common problem in many Mexican hotels, and will not keep us from staying here the next time we're in San Cristobal.
