Casa Abolengo

A charming historic hotel only  5 minutes walk from Zocalo and even closer to Puebla's great craft markets.  Rooms are basic and comfortable - classic Puebla colours and distressed finishings.  Courtyards are lovely.  Breakfasts are delicious and generous.  On a Friday and Saturday the neighbourhood can be a little noisy - bring your earplugs😄

The Hotel Casa Abolengo is in a building that is over 200 years old!  No two rooms are alike, based on the several I got to see.  My room had exposed stone from the original construction.  I had a nice bed with clean, comfortable covers and pillows.  The shower had plenty of hot water and the towels were nice.  I felt safe there by myself, as they close the gate to the street at night.  Wi fi is available in the central courtyard.  I noticed some grumbling in the comments about it not being available in the rooms, but it's a stone and brick structure, so I didn't find this unusual.  The nice proprietor locked up our bags after check out and helped us get them all back down to the front desk.  The very nice little restaurant upstairs serves a substantial breakfast, which was included with our rooms.  The place was clean and safe and as a bonus was charming and historical.

Historic Hotel, Great Value & Location 

This hotel is on a deserted-looking block only a few minutes walking distance from the Zocalo. The entrance is a dark narrow passageway that looks like the entrance to a catacomb. The guest rooms are windowless, dark, and dimly lit, especially the ones on the ground floor.  I declined these, and was given a room on an upper floor. It was still windowless and dimly lit, but less cave-like. 

The ceiling in my room was high, which I liked. It had a smart TV, but neither I nor the hotel staff was able to switch it to English. The bathroom was very small; toiletries were provided. The shower was hot, but the shower nozzle was small so the pressure was rather weak. The bath towels were thick, but very rough.

The wifi worked well, which was surprising considering how old the hotel is and that the walls are stone.  I could hear loud music from the Zocalo until the wee hours of the morning on Saturday night. Sunday night was quieter. I did not hear my neighbors, but this may have been because the hotel appeared to have few occupants.

There is a ground floor terrace, but no rooftop terrace.  There is no elevator. There is no food available at the hotel, but there are several restaurants and cafes nearby.  

Staff at the hotel are excellent; very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Most speak some English. Housekeeping did an excellent job cleaning my room.

I booked this hotel at the last minute the weekend following the Day of the Dead. I paid $37 USD per night, including tax. This was about $10 - $15 too much, and not worth the price. If you book ahead of time, you can get a room for about $25 USD total per night. 

Even though the hotel has a certain rustic appeal, I wouldn't stay there again, even at $25 USD per night. I didn't like how dark and cold the rooms were, how deserted it felt, the block it was on, or the lack of amenities. However, if you don't mind windowless rooms, and want a quiet hotel near the Zocalo, you might like Hotel Bacantes.

Misses: Old and rough blanket, not enough hangers or wall hooks, broken toilet seat. My friend's towels had a peculiar smell. I did not get a new water bottle the next day (had to go to reception for one) and the water glass was not replaced with a clean one. The sink needs its plug hole cleaned, it was gross. 
Hits: Fantastic location in center of Puebla. A good breakfast and for the most part friendly staff.  I especially want to thank Gaudel for looking after us so well. He went out of his way to accommodate us and I sincerely appreciated his friendly smile and efforts to help with our luggage. Muchas gracias.

Hit and miss

Casa Abolengo is in a beautiful historical stone building, with lovely tile work and courtyards. 
The location is perfect, close enough to the square and all the gorgeous churches and cathedrals, but far enough away for it to be fairly quiet at night.
The restaurant has a beautiful decor, and the food and staff are great.
The lack of Internet in the rooms is a disappointing, and in the common spaces, such as the reception and restaurant it is very patchy.
Not ideal when you want to touch base with home.
Downsides:
The bed and base were not good, you could feel the springs digging into your back when in bed, and the base creaked when you turned over!
Tne drainage in the shower was a major issue, looked like it would flood at normal pressure, and after only two minutes of showering.
Although the rooms are charming and full of character, there is little to no ventilation in the rooms. If you were prepared to get eaten alive by mosquitoes, you could leave the bathroom window open. 
I understand this goes with the nature of such an old and beautiful  building, but if you were asthmatic, I would avoid.
The bathroom sink leaked all over the floor, so be aware of leaving your personal toiletries on the ground.
Only one out of the three front staff were friendly, and trying to get change for your cash payment was trying to get blood out of a stone!
The proprietor does do the best he can, and the linens were spotlessly clean, you are provided with water, and fresh towels.
Good for a night. 

Charming, but needs work

I was disappointed with Casa Abolengo.  I have stayed in several comparably priced hotels in Puebla that were friendlier and more comfortable. My room was very plain as well as dark and cold. There was nothing on the walls, there was very little light, and there was only a thin blanket.  I slept in my thermal underwear and my jacket while I was there but was still cold.  The hot water didn't even last through my shower even though I was trying to shower quickly.   The hotel advertised a "terrace."  I'm not sure what they meant by that; there was a small outside area on the second floor, but there were high walls around it, so it had neither a view nor much sun. There was no wifi in the rooms (this was made clear on the website, though)...just in the "common areas," of which there were few.  Of the three employees that I met, only one was friendly.  The only bright spot was the breakfast, which was in a restaurant on the second floor.  The menu and food were good, the room was attractive, and the service was good.
