A friend recommended Boca del Monte and it was an excellent recommendation.  The location is terrific- close to everything in Centro.  The breakfasts were lovely and lovingly served.  I needed some dietary accommodations and they were made easily and cheerfully.  The room was very clean and we had everything we needed.  The staff were so helpful in answering our questions.  It is a friendly place full of lovely staff and guests.  At night, everything was quiet .

We had a wonderful trip to Oaxaca and our stay at Boca del Monte was great!  The hotel is central, the space is charming, the breakfast is delicious and the staff is super helpful!  We enjoyed every aspect of our visit!  You won't regret staying here!

My group of international writers and I reserved the entire El Diablo y La Sandia: Boca del Monte for two weeks. Maria and her team, led by Juan Carlos, were pleasant and accommodating. The hotel is charming and fun and a little funky. Some of the rooms are a little small, but they were clean and functional, and the bathrooms were remodeled in good taste. They serve a delicious breakfast, and they offer access to the full kitchen for other meals. The location was great: not quite in the heart of the hustle and bustle of the city center, but in a quieter location just a five minute walk from the center. Overall, we were very happy with our experience.

Everyone was welcoming and helpful - the daily breakfast is wonderful and gives you the opportunity to meet other guests. Staff is always helpful. Rooms was comfortable and clean. The location is about 2 blocks  from Santo Domingo de Guzman, Cultural museum and the botanical gardens. On a side note the people of Oaxaca are so welcoming and are glad you are there - we had a wonderful time.

El Diablo y La Sandia is such a great bed and breakfast! This was my second time staying with them, once at each location. The first time I stayed at the Los libres location and second was at the Boca del Monte location. Both locations were great and within walking distance to most everything in the city (we like to walk around). If you're more interested in art and the main plaza, Boca del Monte is closer to that, while libres is closer to the big markets (like 20 de Noviembre). But it easy enough to walk to all of it from either location.

The staff is absolutely amazing! They had great recommendations and helped arrange taxi's to and from the airport, as well as a a private driver for one of the days our whole group wanted to go to a few different locations outside of town. Prices were reasonable and the drivers were great as well! Lastly one person from our group left behind some art and the staff was extremely accommodating - they mailed the art back to the US for us. We of course paid for it, but I couldn't ask for better service than they provided!

Breakfast was always delicious and with such a great atmosphere. You can enjoy breakfast with the group you're traveling with as well as other guests of the hotel. This makes it much easier to meet other people traveling and get tips about what they've done around the city. Both locations are beautiful and have numerous places to hang out around the property or on the terraza surrounded by beautiful plants. Its a great place to wind down after a busy day of exploring. Beds were comfortable and rooms were nice and clean. The only warning I'd note is not all of the rooms have AC. Most of the year its not really needed because it cools off at night, but there are some rooms that have AC if it's important to you. 

We will be back!

I felt so comfortable and well cared for here, right down to every detail. The rooms are adorable, unique and with VERY comfortable beds and bedding. The bathroom is also beautiful and unique - a skylight over the shower makes it feel almost like you’re outside - and I left wanting my future bathroom to be designed like this!!! Breakfast every day was delicious and the large dining table led to great conversations with the other guests. A touch that I really appreciated (as a runner who drinks lots of water) was the water dispenser in the kitchen to refill my water bottle, and the fresh pitcher of water the staff left in my room every day - water in Mexico can otherwise get really expensive! I felt very safe in this neighborhood. I had a late flight and the hotel was flexible with my late arrival, and also gave me transportation recommendations that saved me a good bit of money. They kept my luggage for the day after my checkout as I had a late departure flight as well. My only complaint is that there are a few bars nearby whose music I could hear late at night while trying to sleep - but that’s not the fault of the hotel! Even considering that, I would absolutely stay here again because it was such a convenient, comfortable and enjoyable stay!! And I will absolutely recommend it to friends and family!!

Very friendly staff, very responsive. Use What’s App to communicate. Patio on the roof was charming, nice gardens, and a dining area that feels like a homey living room. There is a small market a few blocks up the street.

Lovely & charming B&B with great location! We love the simple yet ever so thoughtful decor & amenities.  

El Diablo y La Sandia is at a great location (5-10 mins walk to everything!Centro 8 mins /Zocalo 15 mins), and the gated space with nice courtyard made you feel homey & safe.  The daily breakfast always brings us a smile (it's the only way to start a day!)  The team of hosts/hostess are always available (and via WhatsApp).  So as a non-spanish speaking visitors we really felt we have a way to get help easily (taxi to airport, tips to local restaurants etc.) We stayed at La Casita for 2 weeks.  The room has 2 levels so we dedicated the upstairs space for remote working, the WiFi was great (each room seems to have their own) & we were able connect without any issues.  The space was lovely & we just had such a relaxing & great time that we can't wait to return again soon!



We LOVED this little hotel.  Rooms are quiet and exceptionally comfortable, the community breakfasts are delicious, the coffee perfect, and the honor bar stocked with cerveza, wine, mezcal (of course!), kombucha and other cold beverages was a much appreciated bonus. We only stayed here for 2 nights; I wish it had been a week.

We stayed in Arbol room for just under a week. Everything about it was wonderful. The colourful decor and layout around a quiet leafy courtyard were really special. The staff were really helpful without being intrusive. I have food allergies and they took so much care every day and remembered my allergies, it was so reassuring. The location was perfect, being one block away from the busy centre, so very peaceful. A really special place to stay.

Best place to stay in Oaxaca

Loved Boca Del Monte! Stayed there upon our arrival and again on return. Run with care and attention. Front desk always helpful. Pleasant breakfast. Rooms are basic, on smaller side, with interesting design elements, always fresh water in carafe, comfy beds and mainly - clean. There were some leak stains on the wall one of our rooms, but that happens in a place with rainy season. Don’t stay if you expect a Hyatt, but do if you’re a free thinker and happy to indulge in different cultures and funky environments! Quiet location three blocks from Santo Domingo. Thank you!

Lovely stay

I've been staying at El Diablo y La Sandia (both their Libres location, and also Boca del Monte) for years. And my adoration of both knows really no bounds. I've taken Boca del Monte over with a group of friends and stayed there many times on my own. Maria and team have created and nurtured such a lovely environment, one that makes arriving feel like coming home, time after time. Boca is comfortable, well-located, charming, friendly... And it feels exactly like what I want to feel when I am in Oaxaca. I wholly recommend.

Home Away From Home

Staying at El Diablo y La Sandia Boce del Monte made my first-time visit to Oaxaca extra special. The friendly and helpful staff, the excellent location, colorful guest spaces and courtyard - everything was superb! Oh yes, the complimentary breakfast served at the communal table was a delicious way to start the day! I loved the comfortable TV lounge area filled with books. There is also an open kitchen and bar area stocked with wine, beer, mezcal, and coffee - all available on the honor system. I stayed in the Botella single room with an extra-comfy bed. The room was small but thoughtfully furnished with nice amenities. I felt so at home at this little B&B and didn't want to leave. I am already planning another trip to Oaxca, but only if I can stay at El Diablo y La Sandia Boca del Monte again!

I can't imagine staying anywhere else in Oaxaca!

What a wonderful place to land in Mexico. The rooms were very nice. The staff was super helpful. Breakfast was very good. It’s walking distance to everything in the core and also to a great lookout spot at the top of the street- it’s an uphill trek but worth it. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and the city of Oaxaca.

The effortlessly charming and beautiful space matches the people who work here who were just wonderful. Every moment spent here was cozy and warming. Now that my trip is over, I will be dreaming of starting my days with the homemade, gorgeous breakfasts and ending my days with the perfect sips of mezcal!
