We rented a 2 bedroom beach front unit using Air BnB. The property is a little strange. Great beach and pools...abandoned (crime scene tape wrapped) restaurant and numerous foundations that were never built on. The road from town is VERY rough! But if you can secure a good unit (#57 is lovely) and have a car to go to town for meals....its a good spot. Most folks who own are Canadian.

The beach and the sea are worth everything, however the road is difficult to reach, if the constant light goes on and the internet goes down (they don't have a light generator or emergency lights) you need repellent as there are a lot of bugs and you need to carry absolutely everything you need, there is no service that can carry you supplies, but as I said at the beginning the play and the sea are worth it!

Beautiful beach and sea! a difficult road to reach, many zancudos, excellent alberca, lighthouse and Wi-Fi.

Arrived at night & left next morning. Did not go to reception area or the beach. The condo I stayed in had two bedrooms that were accessible, but I couldn't make the air conditioning work in either. The refrigerator was dirty. Other rooms were locked.

Pool area is pretty

This property is older, not well maintained. The rooms do not lock properly, not secure at all. No TV. Poor to no internet service. The food was disappointing and expensive. Go into town to eat, I do not advise bringing food to cook in the units.

Playa Maya is about 10 kms out of town on a very bad dirt road so once you're there you probably won't want to go far. It is a strange combination of resident villas and hotel rooms. Our "villa" had a full kitchen, living area and two bedrooms. There was no security box, the front door locked with a padlock and the back door did not lock at all The property is right on the beach and has a good pool. The grounds are well landscaped and maintained. The margaritas here were the smallest and most expensive we had in 3 weeks in the Yucatan!!

We own a self renovated villa here and we love it..... Great beach, no crowds.

Aaaand that's where the "good" part stops unfortunately.

The "hotel" part of this outfit is nothing short of abysmal. All the rental villas are seriously neglected and I cannot in all good faith recommend that ANYONE stays here as a hotel guest.

The rental villas are filthy and dilapidated. They have almost nothing in terms of normal items one would assume they would find in a tropical paradise location,..... Good luck finding a coffee maker that works (even better luck surviving the coffee if you actually get to make one). A toaster, if you can find one of those too, would be well at home back in the 70's. Cutlery and crockery are "optional" it seems...... As is clean linen..... Or any linen at all for that matter.

Most of the fans, fridges, air conditioners, lights, etc, etc do not work and are not maintained or cleaned. 

The "showpiece Palapa" as the central area of the resort has a roof that needed replacing 5++ years ago,..... It is ratty, falling apart and full of holes. Promises of imminent repairs keep getting made and then broken.

The "on site restaurant" (if you could call it that) seems to have a major problem with piling up their garbage right next to where food is cooked..... It's not good. Eat at own risk.

Now,..... That said,..... One CAN buy a villa here very cheaply and fix it up for personal use..... Which is what many here have done and that works very nicely for those that accept the "other" issues, are self sufficient and just love the location.

As far as a "hotel" goes,...... Look elsewhere.

Guests looking to stay in the area should just take a giant step up in class and quality by booking at Xixim eco resort just 3 klm further up the road instead.

The hotel part of this establishment is a total dump.

The place has been a disaster for 10 years at least. It caters to owners paying guests qualify as pigeons only. We battled ants & gecos day & night. The pool has never worked properly. The utilities work sometimes. The on site staff are polite but less than enthusiastic.

Don't Go there

We liked the place, except the beach, they need to do something about the flies because is very difficult to enjoy walking at the beach with bugs. The road needs to be fixed also, the villas as they called them, the bathroom faucet on the sink was not working at all, inconvenient.They have potential but it needs some TLC.

A rather frustrating night. The terrace to get to the place is in poor condition. We arrived and there was not a single person at the reception. The whole hotel is old and neglected. The staff is not qualified to attend to tourism. The restaurant meal is expensive compared to what you receive. The rooms are locked and locked so you don't feel safe at night. The rooms don't have TV and the Wifi signal doesn't arrive. The sheets and towels are old, they're unreliable to use. Many mosquitoes and flies. We stayed alone for one night but it was enough to want to leave the hotel as soon as possible. I don't recommend anyone to stay there.

Disaster is disaster.

We arrived to our room, only for it to have the ac and fan broken and got switched to a different room, that wasn’t prepared to have guests, so it was a little dirty.  Place feels a little run down, but the staff are friendly.  The only plus is the beach that is nice and isolated, making it great if you have kids and children.
