Hotel Posada el Castellano

The hotel is beautiful inside the courtyard. The staff was friendly and the beds are comfortable. Comitan is a lovely town. The room was a little musty but they provided us with a fan straight away.

This hotel was a bit more expensive than many of the others on our trip but it was worth it.   The room was spacious and light and well fitted out.   We had hot water, wifi, tv and a bedside light (a rarity in many hotels).   The staff were friendly and helpful and it was easy walking distance to the centre.

A little bit of luxury

We stayed here overnight on a mini tour of the Yucatán .  The hotel was nothing special but cool and clean.  I liked that there was a mini kitchen in the room.  We were tired so decided to have our evening meal in the hotel was as real disappointment.  I had ordered fish but it was old, dry and tough.  I couldn't eat it.  The other half had beef but said it was really tough.

The room was OK but the food horrible

We stayed here for two nights in two different rooms.   The location is convenient - just a few blocks away from the zocalo.  The rooms were compact but not cramped.  Both had two beds, a small dresser, a closet and a bathroom.  Both were well ventilated.  

The staff were polite.  We had breakfast once in the restaurant and enjoyed the meal.   The rooms didn't seem to be very well sound insulated but the hotel itself was quiet at night.

The first room at first didn't have hot water.  We told the staff and they took care of the problem.  The toilet had plumbing problems and had a slow but steady flow of water that ran all night.   This wasn't happening when we first got the room but after flushing once, the toilet didn't seem to be sealing correctly.

The next day, we asked for and were given a different room that had none of the problems of the first one.  

I would have given this hotel a "very good" rating if not for the plumbing problems we had with the first room.

Clean, pleasant, perhaps a little more maintenance needed.

My husband and I just spent two weeks in the State of Chiapas, MX. We had reserved a room for 2 nights at the Posada el Castellano in Comitan through Booking.com.  We arrived late in the afternoon, tired and actually sick from Montezuma's revenge, to find the street in front of the hotel completely torn up with men replacing a water line or sewer line or something.  Picks and shovels, jack hammers, the works.  We had to park blocks away and approach on foot.  Inside the hotel, the lady at the desk was wearing a dust mask over her nose and mouth.  Half of the interior courtyard was covered in tarps.  Workmen were chipping away at tile work inside the hotel.  We needed to rest, and took our room on the first floor (one level up from street level).  The interior construction work went on until after 6PM and the street construction continued until about 9PM.  We had no hot water in our room.  The manager said it would be fixed at some point, but it never was.  Next morning, the interior construction commenced at 7:30AM.  We still had no hot water and now, no water pressure.  At this point, we found another hotel, and checked out of Posada El Castellano.  
The hotel is really very nice, just not during the winter of 2015.  Booking.com assessed a cancellation fee on the day we vacated, which we are currently disputing.

February 2015 - The hotel is a construction zone!

This is an average hotel but they are trying hard to have most of the amenities. The hotel itself is pretty with a nice courtyard. We took the room on the 1st level. The room was clean, average size with a double bed and a single bed in one room. It is geared for families but we were fine with it. There is one window in each room but that is not an open window so you can get a bit claustrophobic. The first room we took had no hot water and the toilet leaked overnight. We let the manager know and were given another room the next day. It had hot water and we were fine with it. The WIFI works great. Breakfast was not included with our room.

The staff however is not the best and not very helpful. if you do not speak Spanish you will have a real problem (this is the case in other parts of Mexico but especially in Comitan). We asked for hot water to use with our own tea bags but were charged for beverage (tea) full price. When we were leaving the next day we went to the reception to get a taxi but were told that this is something we need to do ourselves. So out we went with our bags looking for a taxi on the streets. Thankfully this was in the morning and not when it gets dark. 

All in all, we do not recommend staying at a hotel in Mexico as you have other great options like Bed and Breakfast which are more welcoming and feel like home. This place is a hotel and you would miss the personal touch of a nice B&B.
