Mabuya Camp

We stayed here for a few days after arriving in Malawi to sort out logistics and thoroughly enjoyed our time here in the company of two great, welcoming and professional staff, Phatso and Hope. Mabuya Camp is conveniently located near several shopping malls (Game, Crossroads) where you can get everything from food to electronics, Airtel, bus connections etc. I enjoyed the pool everyday. Tea and coffee are complimentary throughout the day and one can use the kitchen. Spacious, green, clean, this place is a little gem in Lilongwe.

I spent 4 nights at this friendly place.  Great swimming pool, hot shower, many  lovely places outside to rest and enjoy .  Hope and Gift very present to look if needed something.  Easy 30 mim. walking to shopping mall, banks and SoSoSo bus station.
Really recommand Mabuya Camp.

Since the first moment when I arrived I was greeted with friendly faces making me feel like at home. George and Henry will go out of their way to ensure you have a great stay.
The dogs are lovely, I was very surprised about some reviews complaining about them.
The hostel has a lot of green space where you can chill by the pool, have some food at the restaurant, drinks at the bar or cook your own food. It feels like a peaceful oasis within the hectic business of the city.
It is great value for the price they charge.
The place is very safe, they have 24h security and lockers in the dorms.
Would definitely stay here again.

Great Bar & a must visit place. The Hash Bar of Lilongwe. Food will be order early. Offers many safari packages. The 🍺🍺🍺 is cold. Rooms are African Style with dormetries & better be prepared to be comfortable

We only stayed 2 nights but it was problem free and we got a free upgrade to one of the chalets when they didn't have dorm beds available. The shower had hot water during our stay. The dinners were rather bland and tasteless.

Since this place is pretty well reviewed, I won't comment on everything but instead on things that have been brought up before (the general consensus opinion is pretty accurate here):
- The dorms are decent enough. It probably doesn't cost a lot to replace the mosquito nets with ones without holes though (not that I was bit much at night). Most annoying thing was a lack of plugs.
- The internet is expensive (though you can use it at other hotspots around town), but was decent enough. Managed to watch the latest Game of Thrones with only a few pauses to reload.
- The dogs. Yes, they can be scary. They (sometimes) bark and growl at people. The owners' attitude in some of the responses here is pretty appalling. However, I (and everyone there at the same time as me) had no problems with the dogs, I enjoyed hanging out with them on the sofas. So... if you're afraid of dogs, steer clear. Otherwise, you'll probably be fine. PS: The smaller one has some sort of growth on his rear paw. You should probably get that checked out.
- I didn't notice any problems with cleanliness, and I liked the food from their kitchen. Staff were also friendly and helpful.
- The price is pretty good for what you get!

Good place for backpackers 

Unfortunately a few things brought this place down. With the exception of a 1-2 people, most staff were disinterested in their jobs and meals were lacklustre. On my second stay, I needed to visit a hospital urgently and staff working then did not have have any idea of hospitals to recommend (nor did they seem to care to be perfectly honest) or any sense of urgency with regards to the situation. I was sorted in the end but only through the assistance of my fellow travellers.

However, this is still an okay budget option if you are only staying one night before moving on and not expecting to need any help from staff there beyond calling a taxi. Bathrooms were reasonably clean during both my stays and mosquito nets mostly intact. Not many other travellers staying at the time.

A mixed bag

Previous reviews have various reasons of less than satisfaction.

Hounds were too well fed & fattened by careless doggy-bag ex-owners to savage me, tho I near got spreadeagle-flattened attempting WiFi on the couch. (Intermittent, and isnt expensive to buy the wee card - this is more central than southern africa, so is what is or isnt).

Staff are also a bit intermittent - so are overlanders - a tad here or not there - yet generally not unfriendly.

Dorms & general around are ok, a bit busy messy round facilities - what one may expect - not great - yet ok. Nice grounds by grass & pool - pleasant; no need to be astonished. Love the wraparound veranda, which allows groups to congregate or separate, whatever their persuasion. Good good.

This is a fair base, walkable into the nondescript centre for football, food (no football; overpriced hum-ho scran here).

Andrew - Stratford dude - is a legend in these parts. Forget Shakespeare: Andrew can advise you how Malawi is. He is one to seek out if about: arriving off the bus from Botswana, this man was a gentle professor of getting some handle on Malawi for me. I'm sure not alone.

Ridgeback It

Stayed in Mabuya camp for one night in Lilongwe. The rooms were filthy (cockroaches/mold) and very limited comfort. No hot water. Paid $45 for a double room and definitely not worth the money. Besides that, staff were very unfriendly and even denied us an extra towel even though we were given one. Staff was also drunk. Never going back.

A casual compound in a leafy part of Lilongwe charging US $ 30 a night for a basic room. There is a bar at the reception where guests can and do socialise, a pool and a restaurant. What adds a touch of the bush is the pack of Rhodesian ridgebacks the owner has left to roam the space. One has turned and has developed a habit of biting people. My son was bit in the leg on the way to the washroom about midnight, then retreated into his room where he was trapped with the mad dog lying outside his door. We called the guards, who in turn called back up, but nobody dared go near the dog and put him on the chain. There are no staff or management on the premises at night who could deal with such problems, and we ended up leaving in the middle of the night for a safer place. The management response next day was to offer my son a few drinks for compensation. I was not impressed
