Very loud screaming babies so very restful. To add to the comfort and ambience of the place, there was is also a man constantly coughing and hacking up really badly. Seems a very serious case of coronavirus to me. This person should not be in a public place infecting everybody.

If that's not bad enough for you, there is no lift and it's up six flights of stairs. Building works outside building.

If you like coronavirus and screaming babies all night this is perfect

Coronavirus Victims & Screaming Babies

My friend booked this hostel for us before we travelled to Riga mainly on the basis of the price. I was initially sceptical about staying in the newer part of the city as I had only been to the old town previously, but the location turned out to be pretty good; with some great restaurants and bars nearby, as well as accessible supermarkets. The old town is only about a ten-fifteen minute walk from here anyway. 

The younger man who checked us in and we occasionally passed in the corridors was fairly blunt and not particularly welcoming, but the older lady who runs the place was incredibly friendly - to the point of sharing her food and alcohol with me whenever I was sitting in the kitchen. The other guests mostly consisted of Russian speakers, but a few Asians and Western Europeans were staying there at the same time. The place seems to attract a friendly crowd, and everyone in the hostel was on good terms with each other throughout my stay.

The bed was comfortable, there were enough plug sockets near the bed as well as a generous amount of shelves for storage. There were no lockers, but everyone else was nice so we didn't feel like we needed them anyway. The kitchen facilities were adequate - I hate electric ovens personally but you can't have everything - and there is also a communal food cupboard for basic things (salt, vinegar, oil, etc.) that the hostel replenishes. Everything in the bathroom worked, though the music coming through from the kitchen radio (which could not be turned off as it is unreachable even for a tall person) could also be heard in the bathroom which was annoying as I like to play music as I shower.

The only real problems I can think of though would be the wifi: the hostel has two networks, one for the kitchen and front areas, and one for the corridor and bedrooms. The kitchen one worked fine in the kitchen, but the bedroom wifi was slightly clunky and would cut out whenever we tried to watch a film or tv show. The other issue, as others have commented, is the height of the place: the hostel is situated in the penthouse suite of the building, and there are six flights of stairs to climb every time one needs to enter. When coming back from a bar or with a takeaway, this got very irritating very quickly.

Penthouse Hostel

This is a really cheap place to stay, but it ain't worth it. The place is shabby and in need of a renovation. We were here in March and didn't really meet any other tourists staying at this hostel (which I had hoped), mainly locals. So if you are looking for something in this price range, just look for another hostel. 

The hostel is in a close distance from the old town and also offers free tea/coffee. 

If you have problems walking up six floors this is not the place for you. It is not possible to open the windows either. The walls are thin so if you are a light sleeper you will probably wake up if people are noisy. I wouldn't stay here again. I'd rather pay more for something better.

Choose something else

The room we got was big but a little dark. The beds were ok. Shower and kitchen were very well equipped and the staff was nice. The hostel is not far from the old city center and the central station. It is located on the 5th floor with no elevator. 
All in all it is a nice place to stay if you are on a budget.

Nice and cheap

- during the day there was nothing, but at night it started: bed bugs on the beds, on the sofa, on the walls behind the paintings - everywhere. We spend a sleepless night and check-out asap. 
- hostel is on the 5th or 6th floor 
+ clean bathrooms and kitchen 

First impression was good, but after our discovery I wouldn't recommend coming there. 

BED BUGS! 

Very lovely, cozy room. Fully equiped kitchen, many bathrooms and showers. Very good location, near oldtown. Good price. Only minus is that it is on 6th floor with no elevator. Overall, loved the place!
