Large family room with balcony-terrace on the river. Ventilator, air conditioning. Efficient home, with English shovels. Not far from the landing, and nearby small simple restaurants. Details: no renewal of water bottles, coffee bags, toilet paper.

Dokchampa guesthouse may not be the right choice in this fantastic island world if you are looking for a quiet, relaxing, natural and friendly environment.

I moved in here shortly before the end of the pandemic because I thought the rooms were very nice.

The owner asks me to pay monthly in advance, which is quite normal under these circumstances. But very soon it turned out to become a nightmare for me.

In the first two weeks there was now Wi-Fi available here in the room.

Then, there are two big roosters right in the back yard who take more than pride in wishing a very good morning to anyone and everyone who wants to know and even those who don't want to know from 3:00 am onward.

In the late morning they are exhausted and take a nap but only to continue crowing refreshed.

Shortly after moving in, I discovered several ant colonies in the bath and living room. However, I found among them a kind of tiny, tiny ants that like to wander through the bed even at night and wanted to eat me up, causing me great discomfort regardless of my well-deserved night sleep.

This is beyond annoying, especially as the owners make no attempts to do anything serious about it.

So I had to live with them because they built their nests in the partition walls and roofs, and were out of reach without real effort.

And these are exactly the little ants that like to move around in technical devices such as smartphones, laptops etcetera because it is warm and dry inside, like in my case.

The end of this story is that they destroyed my tablet with an irreparable short circuit.

What an expensive stay at this vacation home.

 

In front of my room less than 1 meter from the entrance is a brand new concrete road. So I literally stepped straight from my front door onto the street.

The fishermen here start their work quite early in the morning before dawn. When they drove by with their noisy and broken motorcycles at 4:30 am in the morning, I literally felt like they were driving through the room next to my head. This problem exacerbated during the day when large trucks drove by.

On the Mekong side where the balcony is located, there is a lot of boat traffic happening all day long and the motorboat engines are pretty loud. This is only surpassed by the many children, moving and screaming around the guesthouse using it as their playground.

Between the stone house and the bungalows, there is a large concrete trough that is always filled with water and mosquito larvae. So please don't be surprised if in the later evening and at night it's just swarming with mosquitoes that ask you to donate blood and incidentally carry the pathogens of malaria and dengue fever. Unfortunately there is no mosquito net in the room.

I feel a little sorry for Mr. Vixay, the man of this family, because he is a really kind-hearted, very hardworking man.

His wife, on the other hand, is smiling for money only - the complete opposite - that kind of money grabbing bit...

Whenever I had a question or a wish for her, the answer was negative or she said it was not possible. She couldn't even do my personal laundry, although they have a washing machine available for the guesthouse's linens and towels, nor could she provide simple drinking water.

Whatever your decision will be, I wish you more luck than I have experienced here in this place over the past few weeks.

How drastically people&places can change to the worse after a pandemic

Together with 25 other Anglo-Thai Society members, my wife and myself had lunch today at the Dokchampa Restaurant which is part of Dokchampa Guesthouse.

It is a large property - overlooking the Mekong River - but we were the only guests having lunch. No matter, both the service and the food (I particularly liked the Mekong Fish dishes) were good and - as such - I would have no difficulties paying a return visit.

The large room has everything you need: a bed, a desk, a chair, a private toilet with shower (with warm water) and a huge terrace with table, chairs and mattresses. For this, everything is clean and when it gets cold, there are enough warm blankets. Then there is a great view of the river and luckily for a beautiful sunset. The owners are helpful and also make boat trips. From the guesthouse you can explore the beautiful surroundings by bike, motorcycle or on foot. Wlan works very well. The room is priced at the upper limit for performance, but it's not exotic for Laos.

Very large room with comfortable bed on the river bank with 2 hammocks and table and chairs to admire the view from the balcony adjacent to the room. Nice to see the boats pass by and admire the sunsets.

Perfect for us

We had to stay for 4 days we stayed there for 7... big clean room with balcony overlooking the Mekong, beautiful sunset. The bathroom is large and clean. The household is cleaned every day. Towels changed on demand. The two nearby restaurants are top. Excellent quality price ratio.

We stayed here for 7 nights, the owner Visay was very nice to us - help us when it was needed also took care with healthy tea when were sick. There is an option to go with him on his boat for sunset and swimming tour - recommended! The room was big with a balcony on the Makong river. Quit place, good location. The people around here were very nice and the local close restaurants were also great.

Large room with a wide balcony on the Mekong river, very quiet, very clean, nicely and simply decorated. Perfect! 
Dokchampa guesthouse  was only 4 rooms when I was there, but extension should extend it to 8 very soon.

It's a great five-day stay in this guest house. The location is a little out of focus, and the view from the terrace is a major asset. Obviously the cleanliness criteria are not the same as ours and we can't blame them. Don't expect it to be impeccable but it's very right. The restaurant is good, especially the local dishes. If I go back to Don Khone, I'll definitely stay here again. If breakfast was included in the room price, it would be a mistake!

That's a good address.

Stayed 3 nights and was really thinking about searching for another accomodation. The main reason was that the guesthouse is not a the quitest place on Don Khon. The first night there was a disco just accros the river on Don Det, from early morning to late night you hear the really annoyingly loud motor boats passing by and almost all day round motorbikes are passing by on the road directly in front of the bungalows.
The room is quite simple, there is no wardrobe or other possibility to hang up clothes.
Whenever I wanted to eat in the Dokchampa restaurant they always told me that the restaurant is closed. But luckily there are lots of other options nearby. And the prize I got via the internet booking was quite high. When other guests just extended their stay, the owner made a much cheaper prize!
However, there are also some positive aspects:
Nice view on the river, balcony with hammock, fast wifi
Summarized next time I would look for another, quiter accomodation, most probably on the west side of Don Det as there is less boat traffic.
