The most friendly owner who is able to professionally and reliably sort out transport to Thailand for a good price. We paid around £16 for full transport to Chiang Rai, including tuktuk to the border, entry, the border bus, and the minivan from the Thai border to Chiang Rai. All went smoothly and was on time (around 4:00-4:30pm departure).
On top of this, the owner provided us with fruit and cold drinks while we were waiting, all for free. Very generous indeed and I would absolutely recommend using this place for your transport to Thailand.

The Thaveesinh Hotel is in the very centre of Houayxai. The staff and the owners are very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The hotel offers free tea coffee and biscuits at the reception, money exchange and can organise a private tour to the traditional village, old fort, morning market and temples. 

They have a booking service for the slow boat to Luang Prabang or across the border into Thailand and onto Chiang Rai. The Gibbon Experience office is opposite. 

The best part about staying here and don’t forget to book a seat to be part of the early-morning gifting of food, a traditional monk ceremony. Where the bell is rung at the temple on the hill and then the monks descend single file down the long staircase and separate in two directions along the main street to be gifted food from the local residents and businesses. The nicest surprise is when the monks stop in front of the hotel and  sing! 

I wish to highly recommend the Thaveesin Hotel. 10 out of 10! 

Very nice hotel with most adorable owners. They helped us organizing a tour for 5 hours with an English speaking driver. This little town has so much more to offer, although most people want to leave with slow boat to luang Prabang as soon as possible. Do visit the book exchange on the same road and spend some time with people there so they can practice their English. A young girl named Phim Green makes the most beautiful drawings… meeting her was very special

We were here during low season (June). Paid 10€ for a room with a double bed, Aircon and a clean bathroom. The WiFi works and it is opposite of the gibbon experience. Also, they ask 235000 kip (23,50€) for a slowboat to Liang prabang, which is much better than the guy at the border crossing. 

Stayed here 2 nights while waiting to go on our river cruise. Very basic but clean. Probably best hotel in town. Free coffee and fruit were offered in the morning. Lots of good eating spots close to hotel for dinner. Be sure to watch the sunset over the Mekong.

We had the pleasure of staying at the hotel one night before our Gibbon Experience and one after.

The hotel is nice, with AC rooms, hot showers and free high speed internet.

The location is perfect, across the street from Gibbon Experience, right next to an ATM, several restaurants, miniarkets, and close to the temple.

The hotel doesn’t serve breakfast, but they have bananas, coffee, crackers and water. If you want a full breakfast then you are just a few steps away from several restaurants that serve breakfast.

The staff of the hotel are simply AMAZING, they go above and beyond to help you out with anything you need. 

Would stay again if we ever went back.

Situated in a border ‘town’, this hotel is clean but pretty basic.
The location is good, in the heart of town with a couple of cafe/bars across the road. Plus a mini market, which was handy. The staff are really friendly and helpful, and assisted us with our long boat ticket and tuk tuk transfer, which all went well.

I stayed here for one night in February to be able  to catch the slow boat to Luang Prabang the next day. For $10 the room was clean. The A/C worked. And the boss lady was very helpful. The young lady at the counter didn't speak English but when she had a problem understanding she would go next door and find someone who spoke English.

Great location in the heart of the town, surrounded by lots of places to while away the time waiting to board your slow boat to Luang Prabang.
Clean comfortable bed.
Extremly good value for money, if you just need a bed for the night.
We had a room at the front of the building, which provided us with an excellent viewpoint for the alms-giving ceremony in the morning. We were woken by the beautiful sound of the monks chanting under our window.

Good Place to Stop for the Night

For USD20/night it comes with aircon, a hard bed, functional toilet and bath. Didn't use the TV at all. You could do worse with some of the other places in town. It's centrally located just across from The Gibbon Experience, has restaurants, bars and a laundry all within a stone's throw. They did let me check in before 7am in the morning after I arrived on the night bus from LP.
