Me and my friend stayed for couple nights at double room. We really enjoyed our stay. Room clean enough, staff ( Girl Manager ) super friendly and very kind. Breakfast yummy. We love walking so it was okay for us walk from metro station ( 10 minutes ) 

We really enjoyed our stay at this lovely hostel 

Quite a centrally located hostel in Almaty with rooms dedicated to cinema topic. Clean dorms and okeish bathrooms (watch out for mosquitos as there are lots of those likely due to the small river proximity) yet I was very disappointed with one thing: as I was taking a night flight back home, I left my luggage at the hostel  premises and once I got back in the late afternoon I asked if I can wait for a while outside as I still had a couple of hours till my flight. I did not want to use any hostel facilities - just sit quietly outside and read a book. Yet, the owner got quite rude and told me that I can do it only if I pay as otherwise I can wait “on the street or in the park”. In the end he very reluctantly agreed that I will wait “for not more than 1 hour” (which was anyway my intent) but did in a way that I really felt bad about it. I stayed in hundreds of hostels across the world and never had a situation like this - also in Central Asia hostels owners never made any issues with me waiting for 1-2hours outside (a lot of them in fact offered me to use the bathroom or have some tea before departure) even those that were much cheaper that Alma. Maybe I was just super lucky so far and have too high expectations (which honestly I don’t think is the case as I’m not exposing the places for any additional costs) but the this kind of approach made me feel extremely uncomfortable and I would never get back there again. There are so many budget places in Kazachstan to chose from that the attitude towards the traveler is often what matters the most and can be of a huge competitive advantage - and Alma Cinema truly failed on that.

Quite a clean hostel, yet with a very disappointing approach towards backpackers

Despite the fact that the hostel is located on a road with no sidewalk and in order to get there you have to cross the (relatively) busy road, the location of the hostel is pretty good. It is walking distance to most sites and a lot of buses stop nearby. We arrived really early and were able to leave our luggage there until we were able to check-in in the afternoon. We had a double room - it is small but totally sufficient, clean and comfy. The shower was pretty good (which is not always the case in this part of the world). Wifi was good. Breakfast was simple but good. There was coffee (even though instant - but that's good enough for me). Staff was always polite and friendly. There is a language barrier since most of the people working there do not speak much English. When checking out, the girl working called us a cab to the airport - all in all very helpful staff and I would stay here again.

If I could make a suggestion, it would be that there should be a sign "Please wash your dishes after breakfast. :)" or something of that sort. I have absolutely no problem doing my own dishes but I was extremely unsure if this is what was expected or not since every hostel handles this differently when it comes to breakfast. When we were staying there, it was off-season and not many people were there. While one of the staff was still preparing something in the kitchen I almost felt like intruding when I tried to wash my plate and cup after breakfast but I also did not want to leave it lying on the table. I did so only because I saw a guy, who has been staying there already for a while, clean his plate. And, due to the language barrier, asking is going to be a challenging task. :)

Good place to stay

I really enjoyed my stay in this hostel. The breakfast is amazing and the staff is nice. In general, the concept of this hostel with every room being another movie is amazing. The facilities are nice and the garden is good to chill. The kitchen is well equipped. The only thing that I did not really like was that the showers and the toilets weren't really clean. 

Really nice and original concept

Absolutely loved my stay in Alma Cinema. The hostel is very clean, rooms are comfortable, common area is big. Breakfast is excellent. It's in walking distance to most interesting places in town (and if something you need is too far, the staff can call you a taxi - they are super cheap here). The staff is brilliant. They don't speak much English, but it doesn't stop them from doing everything in their power to help travellers. Excellent place. Highly recommended.

What a wonderful place!

Very nice hostel, clean, comfortable and quiet. Local breakfast, complete and fresh.The staff is really kind and helpful. They do answer quickly to questions before departure. Very good rate price / quality.

Cosy and comfortable

We had a great stay in the hostel in both the mummy themed private room and the pirates of the Carribbean room! 

Very comfy bed, great decor, and each room had a hairdryer and Aircon. The hostel is SO clean which is a definite bonus :) 

The best part were the lovely staff. The lady running the hostel was very friendly, spoke English well and was always very helpful. The breakfast was also delicious especially the pancakes. 

We will be going back to stay on our return to Almaty !
