Wadi Rum Full Moon Camp & Tours

This is a great camp. It’s 10km from Wadi Rum city, so further into the valley than other camps. We got picked up as soon as we got to the city. For 10JD we were offered a great dinner. About 8 different plates to choose from, 7 of which were vegetarian. All delicious. Breakfast which is included was also great. 

This is a lengthy review but I’m compelled to provide as much detail as possible to justify the title, if you’re after a truly authentic Bedouin experience please read on:

Without sounding too elitist, I am an established and well published magazine travel writer for a best selling international travel magazine for 10+ years and can offer a professional opinion on this camp, the people who run it and the experience offered.  

I’m usually very sparing about internet reviews and usually conserve views for magazine publication but this wasn’t an official travel writing trip but the experience was so good I’m compelled to make sure the experience gets out there for others to enjoy.

For context my fiancée and I decided to travel to Jordan after a very difficult year.  This was explained to Tyseer from Full Moon Camp during the initial contact.  We had no idea how much of the ‘personal touch’ and forethought they would apply to this until we arrived.

We met Abdul, Tyseer’s brother at the reception centre who was adorned with full Bedouin garments and traditional shemagh, the Bedouin headgear.  We were greeted with an abundance of warmth and enthusiasm.  Priority 1 was to ensure we looked and felt the part. Abdul swapped my Panama for a red and white shemagh, which was surprisingly cool.  Next he took great care to ensure we were properly seated on our camels in the true Bedouin posture as we left the village of Rum and entered the desert.  

The vistas were spectacular from the outset with Wadi Rum’s characteristic red sand and otherworldly mountain landscape. 

As would be expected in the desert the heat was intense so Abdul made sure we had respite and refreshment.  First stopping in Lawrence spring with a traditional tea.  

We had a lovely chat under the traditional black and white Bedouin canvas.  Next Abdul gave us a desert tour in his 4 x 4 and pointed out interesting rock formations and historical facts, making plenty of pit stops along the way.  

He took the time to help us understand what it means to be a Bedouin and what the desert means to him and his beloved camels.  We made a stop at another Bedouin camp and Abdul cooked an amazing traditional Bedouin lunch including delicious bread made by his mother earlier that day.  It was truly authentic and very tasty!

One of the more profound moments of the day was our adjustment to the absolute silence of the desert.  We both had a curious humming in our ears whilst our senses acclimatised to a sensory First for both of us.  This was something Abdul often sees in newcomers before and thus he understood it explicitly.  Unprompted Abdul let us have some time alone whilst we stared out at the vast expanse of sand and jagged peaks to as he said, “go deep”.  We are both practical and realistic people that lead a fairly hectic life, but this experience really put us in touch with each other whilst we lay on cushions absorbing and appreciating our new found sense of being in the moment.  When he thought the time was right Abdul joined us and off we went for the rest of our desert tour.  This included walking bare foot on the sand up a dune.  A minor cultural detail of the trip, but a must do according to Abdul to ‘refresh the feet’.  We had to agree with him afterwards.  

Later that afternoon we arrived at our tent in one of Full Moon’s smaller camps.  We had the rose coloured jagged mountains and spellbinding desert sunset in front of us and mother camel’s tending to their cute calf’s to our left.  The moment had an epic moment to it, like a scene from our own film somehow.  Our tent had an extended area for relaxing outside where Hamid, Abdul’s cousin gave us cushions and mattresses to take in the experience like true Bedouin’s.  Later that evening we enjoyed another delicious meal cooked in the traditional ‘barbecue in the ground’.  We were shown how the food roasted in a steel cage under the sand.  Vegetables, lamb, chicken and all sorts of other Bedouin delicacies.  We sat in the camp’s main tent, which was bedecked in striking Bedouin fabrics, tassels, shisha pipes and a canvas that had taken Hamid’s mother years to manually complete, using time honoured Bedouin methods.  We chatted at length with Hamid about Bedouin culture.

We retired to our tent and that night we lay outside our tent and star gazed, chatting about everything and anything in a way that we had forgotten how to do, caught up in our fast paced modern lifestyle.  For the first time we saw the Milky Way and didn’t realise stars could illuminate the sky so majestically.  

We had only planned to stay one night in the desert but we were sad to leave it nevertheless. 

As a travel writer I’ve sought unforgettable experiences for many years.  But since we’ve returned we genuinely cannot stop talking about our time in Wadi Rum with the Full Moon Team.  

Tyseer, Abdul and Hamid applied a very personal approach to our experience and they absolutely ensured we connected with the area, the history, the Bedouin culture but more importantly with each other.

The next part of our trip was in Aqaba where Tyseer was visiting friends and he insisted we meet up for a drink to make sure our expectations were met.  There is no question that they were.

I’ve travelled the Middle East and have looked for an authentic experience such as this, but I really found it at Full Moon Camp.  I can not recommend this enough.  This is not a tacky commercial experience, this is the real thing. Wadi Rum will always be a part of us now and that is thanks to the team.  

We will absolutely return one day.



We spent 3 days / 2 nights hiking and scrambling in Wadi Rum. The first night we spent in the Full Moon Camp. The second night under the stars and the sky. Tayseer and his brother Abdul (who was our guide during hiking) made this one of the best travel experiences we have ever had. The food was delicious, we were very warmly welcomed, met the families, were impressed by the sense of humor of the beduins and just had a wonderful time! Amazing tour of the beautiful desert and incredibly welcoming hosts. We didn't expect that on top of the beauty of the desert and fun of the dune bashing and climbing rock formations that we would also walk away with such wonderful friends. One tip is to make sure you plan enough time to get to the camp when it is still daylight.

I can highly recommend Full Moon Camp - precisely because of the very welcoming hosts. It's an unforgettable way of getting to know the Beduins' culture better. The camp has everything one needs, including delicious dinner and breakfast. It's easy to get to know other travellers and share stories and laughs. Tours in the desert are as mind-blowing as the star-filled sky at night. It was the best part of my journey - would always return here!
