Yugawara Onsen Seiranso

Very nice place. The location is pretty and very green. The establishment feels very cozy and the rooms were traditional and pretty. The hot springs were nice and we got lucky and were all alone without any other visitors. At night they served us a huge full traditional japanese dinner with lots of different food and in the morning a very rich japanese breakfast which, like the dinner, included a lot of variety of food. The futons were very comfy, and in all honest, it was the best sleep i had in Japan. Really nice place, I recommend it if you plan on staying at a ryokan. It also had a beautiful garden, with a koi pond.

My wife and I wanted to go somewhere nearby (we live in Kamakura) and nice, but din't want to spend too much.  Seiranso looked good, but who knows until you go there, right?  It was about an hour and 10 minutes by car from our place.  It was retro but clean.  The room was nice, with a view of the courtyard (greenery, koi pond).  All we could hear was the waterfall. Nice.  Relaxing.  The two meals were both served in our room and were very good.  The hot springs were just like in the pictures: clean, peaceful (except for a group of noisy Chinese guys...oh, well).  The service was excellent.  There was a room for kids (very nice) with lots of toys, games and space to play.  We will go there again.  Loved it.  Enjoy!

Day 3 can be day trip to Fuji Moutain which is 2.5 hrs away

Cute place for a traditional Japanese experience. Staff was very friendly and tried to communicate with us the best they could. We got along fine. 
The onsens were perfect. One early morning my bf and I both got our own private outdoor onsens since it was raining. For me the rain helped cool the onsen down since I get dizzy easily. 
The food was traditional. Coming from Canada we weren't really used to it. I ate what I could. If you are a picky eater this may not be for you. 
Service was exceptional. Everyone is very friendly and tries to help you. Breakfast and dinner are served to you in your room, unless you would like it in the restaurant. Someone comes in and prepared your bed for you as well. On final day when we were leaving it was raining and they gave us umbrellas to take with us. They actually came out in the rain with us so that we would get to the right bus stop. Definitely went above and beyond. Definitely recommend if you would like the traditional Japanese ryokan experience.

we arrived at the Yuwagara station very late and after a very short wait, a taxi came. after a short drive through the tiny Yuwagara town then uphill we were at Seiranso

upon arrival we were warmly greeted by the staff at the entrance who spoke no English (none of us spoke Japanese either!) nevertheless we understood each other

the elderly gentleman took us to our room upstairs and dinner was served soon after.

an elderly lady who came to serve us explained everything to us and taught us how to eat them (in japanese) then a younger lady (an apprentice?) did the translation.
the dinner was SOO good! the lobster was fab and the vegetarian was amazing too! it was a real feast and we were stuffed after! 

the outdoor bamboo forest onsen isn't very big but you can hear the sound of the waterfall while you relax

when we returned from the onsen, they have already tidied everything for us and laid out the tatami. needless to say we all slept like babies

in the morning, they gave us a call first to ensure we were all up before someone coming in to remove the tatami and lay out the dining tables + chairs for us. breakfast again was a feast! can't tell u how happy we were!

we managed to spend some time in the "waterfall" onsen (which is opened to men most of the time). this one is sooo much better than the "bamboo forest one"! much bigger and just much nicer with the full view of the waterfall. what more can you ask for??

when we left they booked a taxi for us to take us back to the station. and after a short wait and train journey, we were back in central tokyo.

overall definitely a highlight of our trip! can't wait to visit Seiranso again!

Please note: the outdoor "waterfall" onsen is opened for ladies from 8am - 9.30am, then 6pm - 9pm at the time of writing so best to ask breakfast to be served at 7.30am so you can spend abit more time there before you leave!

Service and food were great. The location of this place is quite secluded. The room was very spacious but a bit dated. Even though the room was clean, it seemed like it wasn't because of the color contrast and lighting. The hot spring was nice, but be careful of spiders, especially if you go to the smaller one.

Fault it! A true Japanese experience of staying in a ryokan. Note that this is a very old building and is a bit dated - but we felt that added to the overall
Experience. The staff don't speak much English, but we managed to
Get by just fine (this in fact added to the experience). 

Major pros: stunning outdoor onsen overlooking waterfall, nice garden, a lovely maid serving fantastic breakfast and dinner in the room. GIven our own Japanese robes and slippers on arrival. 

Only con was that this was based in yugawara, and transport links to the hakone area weren't as good as they could have been (but making a day trip from
The hotel to
Hakone area was easy enough).

Highly recommend if
You are looking for a traditional Japanese experience and a good value ryokan and are not bothered by an older building

Located near a waterfall, the staff was really nice (not english speaking but we could easily manage), the food was incredible (we had it served in our 8 tatami's room) and the hot springs (onsens) were just as we expected: traditionnal and really really hot. Many japanese tourists there, so we could meet few local people. The rooms are not brand new but that was very clean. We had our yukata of course and the staff came to do our beds at night which were very confortable. I highly recommend this accomodation for the one looking for a traditionnal ryokan. It took us 1h30 to come from tokyo (one JR line and then 20min of bus).
