The minute you arrive at this isolated Ryokan style resort overlooking Matsushima Bay you can’t help feeling relaxed! The stunning spacious timber indoor architecture and a requirement to only wear the slippers and ‘pyjamas’ provided to you, creates a relaxed anonymity. We had to request size L large as we are 2 big Aussies.. There are two divine indoor/outdoor ‘hot spring spas’ that are really a ‘must do’ experience. We enjoyed the live music in the lobby at night, and the Glass Museum too. I found some lovely Japanese crafted gifts at a reasonable price in the resort shop. The meals offered a sensational example of fresh high quality local produce, seafood and meat. If you can’t manage to sleep on the comfortable mattresses on the tatami matting floor, there are a few western style beds available. All rooms have western style ensuites and stunning views over Matsushima Bay. Take a cruise on the local ferry or just relax in the spacious gardens.

A Stunning Secluded Haven of Serenity

We chosed to stay in Ryokan Matshusima in our last day trip in Japan. And 100%, we dont regret it
The Ryokan and its garden are so....beautiful.
From Yokohama st, please take Blue Line to Maita st. Chosed Exit 3, and after 15 minutes walked you will find the Ryokan.
At the entrace door, their put some sign with our name written on it. What a personal touch to welcoming the guest.
Our jepanesse style bed room and bathroom are very big (comparing with our previous hotel room in Osaka & Tokyo). Their tatami matras is good enough to give me a good night rest after side seeing the town.
Their also have a Jepanesse restaurant. But we dont have enough time to give it a try.
We would love to stay again at Ryokan Matshusima in our next trip to Japan.


Beautiful Ryokan @ Yokohama

This is our fifth ryokan on this trip. Absolutely the best views which means that the ryokan is surrounded by a pleasant garden with fish pond and everything. The building itself is not special but the interiors are nice, reception very friendly (in the entrance, your name is marked as a guest!), rooms are spacious and very quiet, food is excellent and the bathroom is very good (large hot water pool and nice washplaces. And finally I understood how to use the pillow: not above the mattress but under (the pillows are filled with something like sand or rise...). This was also the only one with good instructions on what to do and not to do in the bathroom! There is a very fascinating park (Maita Park) just 50 meters from the ryokan on the route to the metro. Can recommend this place without reservations.

Great views, nice place

Stayed here back in December 2008. 

We were in Yokohama for a conference & didn't have the chance to travel elsewhere in Japan. This ryokan gave us a great Japanese experience. The stay was expensive, but included dinner & breakfast which were fantastic. A great variety of dishes, including special meals for our toddler. 

Rooms were comfortable, the fish pond fascinated our toddler.
