Guest House Yamanouchi

As other reviewers have said, it is the perfect place to stay. The house is massive and exceptionally clean. If you get the right room, you have perfect views of Mt Fuji out of the window. Even though the host/owner doesn't speak any English, she was helpful and polite and you somehow manage to communicate with her without speaking a word. She is adorable. Supermarket and restaurants close by and the lake is a 2 minute walk away. Highly recommended.

The perfect place to stay for a few days, if you want to try the "real" Japanese experience. The 2 women, who have the hostel are extremely friendly, and even though none of them speak english very well, the are very helpfull, and kind. Located close to a large supermarked, as well as some basic restaurants. If you are climbing Mt. Fuji, this is the place to be, just take th bus a couple of stops in either direction, and you will find one of the different tracks going up the mountain. 10 stars from a very satisfied traveller from Denmark.
Ps. The breakfast is also quite fulfilling.

Though this is a basic one but the host makes it total different from other normal guest houses. Granny host kept showing warm welcome and trying to make us comfortable. I also love the public bathroom which has a hot spring pool, very enjoyable and relax. I'd highly recommend Yama-no-Uchi to people who seek typical Japanese-style guest house.

The grandma who runs this guesthouse is nothing less than amazing. I think she basically runs the entire guesthouse on her own, from housekeeping to preparing breakfasts. 
The guesthouse is just a short walk from the bus stop - if take a local bus from Kawaguchiko train station (about 20-minute bus ride) or Fujisan train station (also about 20-minute bus ride) please stop at Ichinohashi station (the buses do announce the name of the stops as you go along) as this bus stop is just a 5-minute walk from the guesthouse. From the bus stop, you will see a small road between an onsen place and restaurant, walk through the road and you will see the guesthouse on your right. Besides this, the guesthouse is also a mere 5-minute walk from Lake Yamanaka and on a good day, you could literally see Mt Fuji behind the guest house! There are some decent eating places within walking distance from the guesthouse, which makes this a perfect base for exploring Lake Yamanaka. 
The guest house itself is cozy with spacious Japanese-style rooms. Although the grandma doesn't speak a word of English but she did more than enough to take care of us during our stay - serving green tea upon arrival, preparing sumptuous breakfast and even offering us desserts after dinner. The guesthouse also has an onsen - small but good enough for an onsen experience.
All in all, a wonderful stay with amazing hospitality from the grandma!

When my friend and I went there, it was winter time. The roads slippery, and you do have to walk about 10 minutes from the nearest bus stop. It was difficult with our heavy luggage across the icy floor but we made it, so do take note if you're going during winter.

As winter was the low peak, when we went in there was no one at the door. We had to slightly shout a bit before the super friendly owner came and greeted us. She was a amiable old lady, very much like one's grandma. Her son, owner of a bakery next door, came too, helping us wipe the wheels of our luggage with a cloth, then helping us to carry our two heavy luggage up the stairs. There's only 2 stories in th building by the way. There were 2 guestrooms on the first floor, together with the lobby, the dining area, the onsens (1 for male and 1 for female), a toilet area (I didn't go in so I don't know how many cubicles there were on the first floor), and the owner's living quarters (which we didn't go in of course).

As we were the only guests staying 5 days 4 nights there during that period, the owner generously gave us the Sakura room - the biggest room (usually for 4 people or more) with a stunning view of Mount Fuji (photo available). There was a couple that came the second night but they left early in the morning.

*As there were no deposit, I heard from the grandma that a couple was supposed to come the previous night but didn't show up, and thus the grandma called us twice to confirm our booking. Please don't do this to poor grandma ): If you need to cancel your booking do let her know so she won't stay up all night to wait.

As we were scared that the food will be the same everyday (only breakfast and dinner - no lunch), initially we only ordered for 2 days. But omg the dinner is SOOOO GOOD AND SCRUMPTIOUS AND TOTALLY WORTH IT!!! I think it was 2000yen (or less) for a Japanese dinner with 7 dishes (photo available), so we ordered a day more. The meal can easily go up to 3000yen outside! Oh and it was different for all 3 days. Rice was refillable, and I simply loved the soup so I asked for one more bowl - teehee. You can choose when you want to have your dinner and breakfast.

Location - very near the lake, but in terms of accessibility, may not be that easy to find and navigate. We had data on our phone and could read a bit of Japanese so we could check which bus stop to get off, but if you try to ask for directions not a lot of people know how to get here, so it's probably best to ask the owner the name of the nearest bus stop before you get on the bus from the major stations.

There were also some nearby restaurants so if you want variety, you have it.

Cons- the heating system is not good at all. It was an old kerosene heater which gave out a very bad smell of gasoline - we thought we would die so we didn't keep it on for too long, but it's freezing during winter. However, the place is suppose to be popular during summer (usually full house) as it's cool because of the lake nearby. There's also extra heating chargers - 1000 yen per night.

The price was also slightly pricier than what you would find in budget hotels - around 4000 yen per person per night, excluding meals and heating charge. But I would say that this is the average price for ryokans.

The onsen - it was "exclusive" for us since we were the only guests, but it was too hot for my liking - I could only stay for 10 minutes inside. I'm not sure if the natural temperature is suppose to be like that, because we told the grandma about the temperature, and the next day we went in it was ok for a while but the temperature rose again, so I think the grandma added some cold water but the water heated up anyway.

Overall I had a good time and would recommend people to go there though.

Again, DINNER IS A MUST EAT.
