Amazing resort. Perfection is behind Kitakobushi service and venue!

People should know it’s pretty remote. Not a lot of restaurants, or at least restaurants that are open. Beautiful view though! Good staff.

Nice hotel with great staff and excellent location

Really good in all ways. We spent two nights and had very relaxing time. Staff is most helpful and polite.

Staff are friendly and helpful. The hotel facilities are great especially the lounges are very spacious. There are plenty of spaces in the hotel for relaxation. There are even snacks, desserts and drinks, both cold and hot including alcohol provided in the lounge for guests’ consumption. And each guest is entitled to a scoop of ice-cream per day.

Oh my word! What a beautiful stay! From the outside the building looks rather unassuming but inside it’s gorgeous. Our room was huge (which is not a word often associated with hotels in Japan). Food and drinks around the hotel are available to guests. As I’m writing this review I’m sitting in the lounge with an ice latte, some delicious little biscuits and a glass of juice—all inclusive. Breakfast is incredible. There is an outdoor foot bath: if you have never tried one, you must! The traditional Japanese hot baths overlook the ocean and one pool is outside: breathtaking.

This property is stunning! The foot bath bar is lovely and the nightly snacks and drinks are a nice touch. Lovely onsen and great location overlooking the water. Can highly recommend this hotel. The restaurant is VERY expensive for dinner FYI. Breakfast is great and you do get a scoop of premium ice cream per day at the onsite chocolatier.

The hotel was beautiful and had a lot of activities for guests. The personel was super helpful. The food was super, the chefs made the meal in front of you and used local ingredients. Everything was perfect!

The best hotel in this trip.  Everything is great.  The food is very delicious, the staffs is very friendly.  I can't wait to arrange my next visiting.

Seaview rooms offer panoramic ocean view including two of the great attractions (ie rock and cape).  Surprisingly front desk rejected our requests for Sapporo bus and tour reservations or even checking the status of tour ship departures. They just focus on delivering good services within the hotel.

We were not sure what to expect visiting Kitakobushi Shiretoko. What we found was a well established hotel with lots of amenities (gym, onsen, shop, lounge area, etc) overlooking the harbour. Our room was a decent size overlooking the harbour and we had a spring bath on the balcony which we enjoyed. An added unexpected benefit was the permanently complementary drinks and snacks throughout the day in the downstairs area.

The reduction in one star is due to the price point - this was on par with fabulous five star hotels we stayed at during our time in Japan, but those hotels were supremely better in terms of comfort, style and service. For example, the rooms and communal areas at Kitakobushi could do with an upgrade and the hotel is unable to help with bookings (which is challenging when the main way of booking for nearby boats / food / etc is by telephone). 

Overall, a good stay, but expensive for what it is.

Hot baths overlooking the ocean and divine food

I booked with agoda for kitakobushi shari of Japan. I paid $91. The websites of Agoda and booking.com clearly state that children under 12 stays free. On checkin the hotel requested additional $95 for my 10 year old child. Insist it is against fire regulation if I don't pay. Then during checkout, Kitakobushi request another 150Yen bath tax insist it is mandatory. I stayed 10 different hotel over 14 days, 5 of them with onsen facility. Kitakobushi is the only one that behaved unethically 1. On doubling the child fees 2. Bath tax 150Y that was hidden until checkout when customer are rushing out for the bus. I wrote my experience on Agoda review. Agoda published 9 of my positive review and deleted the only negative review I gave. Agoda did not let me know. They refused to explain. They did not ask me to change my words as compromise. Agoda simply delete.

Out of the world experience

We stayed two nights with the Main Building Sea view Twin and Tatami room.  We were 4 people, so we needed the space. Two were beds and two were futons.  The hotel had just finished a renovation in 2023.  Everything was just nice and new.  The view from the room and onsen was the best with the harbor and ocean view.  I guess you can see ice floes in the winter.  It was October when we visited, so there were not ice floes in the ocean.  Unfortunately, the weather was raining whole 3 days we were there.  Because of that we spent a lot of time in the hotel, we were happy that we chose this hotel because there were so much to do and relax with the onsen and restaurant and lounge and ice cream from the chocolate shop attached to the hotel.  I recommend a plan with meals because there are not so many restaurants in the area.  You do not want to worry where to eat when you are traveling.  The buffet breakfast and dinner were beautiful and gorgeous.  I considered Kiki Shiretoko when I was planing this trip.  But I made an excellent choice picking Kita kobushi.  Kiki Sheretoko seems like a better choice if you are with small children.  We were 4 adults by the way.

The best hotel in the area

This hotel is very large and located right on the little working harbour.  The sea views and the port activity from the rooms (if you book a seaview) was very special.
Tourism has not come back to Shiretoko yet so the spacious hotel had plenty of available seating areas.  They offer free drinks (including beer and spirits, but no wine) for happy hour and a bit longer.  This area is also delightful.  If the weather is kind you can enjoy a warm footbath on the balcony adjoining the drinks area whilst soaking up the view.
The buffet breakfast was sumptious, with lovely serving dishes and robots for clearing the tables - bit of a novelty.  This was included in our package.
The downside was dinner.  We were not offered a half board package so we would have to pay Y132,000 per person to eat in the hotel at the buffet.  There was no  a la carte offering nor a coffeeshop.
Restaurants outside the hotel were very "local" and also hard to find.  Many were closed even though we were there on a Friday and Saturday night.  We did locate a mum and pop traditional family mini restaurant (table where you put your feet in a hole under the table -"horigotatsu") which specialised in crab - fabulous food and authentic experience.  The other night we ate at a local fishing bar/cafe which served local fish and deer which we cooked ourselves on a hot plate, really drinking accompaniments, but a down to earth experience nonetheless.
We stayed here 2 nights, should have been 3 and could easily have been 4 or more if you wanted to use it as a base to do some hiking in Shiretoko Park or visit Rauso, etc.  Also in hindsight, try to get a half board package, possibly worth the small additional cost.
We did a small boat cruise for 2 hours - fabulous trip on a calm, sunny day sitting outside with all to enjoy - totally recommend.  Do not take the large Aurora boat (maybe good in winter as all seats are inside so will be warm).

Loved this hotel and the area

One of our two favorite lodgings during a 3-week Hokkaido excursion. Traditional grand onsen resort you could visit and never leave for days. Starts and ends with great enthusiastic service! Well kept property, offers lounge with a view and complimentary snacks/beverages, nice shops, and wonderful top floor onsen that includes nice sauna.  The best breakfast buffet we’ve ever visited. The small fishing village of Utoro hosts other hotels and other onsen resorts, but Kitakobushi is the only resort right on the little harbor within easy walking distance of the rest of the village. Utoro acts as a great base to explore the Shiretoko peninsula. Our room, an O Club with Twin and Japanese, was spacious  and looked over the harbor and out to sea. We wished we could stay longer.

Favorite during 3-Week Hokkaido Visit

We have booked a room for 3 people and there were amenities set up for 2 people only in the room, it was some effort to communicate with the front desk to get things sorted. Other than that, it was nice experience, the onsen was good and the buffet offered great variety of food with good quality. It was a long journey (about 7-8 hours from Sapporo) to the hotel, but the magnificent view of drift ice on the sea really worth it.

Always a great visit due to the rooms and cuisine. This time though the hotel had hired some rather junior staff into the reception and as concierges who simply neglected helping with luggage and tried even to ignore requests made for it so the staff could use some basic trainings. The difference in service levels met here vs. elsewhere on my travel was just embarrassing for a rather luxurious establishment. The staff & cuisine in the restaurant were top notch though and the rooms just splendid.
