We really enjoyed our stay at this ryokan for a number of reasons: our room, the staff and  the inn's location. The room itself, the smallest in the inn but with the best views, was light-filled, cosy, clean and minimally and tastefully decorated in traditional washitsu style, with tatami, shoji, tokoma and low table. It included all the necessary amenities, including tea, sweet snacks, yukata robes with over-jacket, futons, pillows, kakebutons and blankets, TV, night light and drying rack. It also featured a small and sunny balcony. Although the room did not have its own toilet and bathroom, these could be accessed very conveniently on the same floor (the ofuro bath, located on the 1st floor, was available by booking your desired timeslot, thus allowing you to have a bath with your significant other in complete privacy). The ryokan is run by a lovely family of 7. They were exceedingly friendly and helpful with everything, whether it was pointing out the landmarks visible from our room, explaining the facilities in the area or even carrying out an urgent shoe repair! The evening dinner, included in the room tariff, was especially enjoyable; we had our own table in a large open tatami room shared with four other guests and were served the most exquisite cuisine featuring fresh seasonal mountain vegetables, home-made tofu, shiso juice and konyaku, ayu sweet river fish, and a small nabe of shellfish, mushrooms and vegetables, among many other dishes. During the meal, our hosts moved around the room to chat with guests and the three young children of the family even joined us briefly, which was great fun. The location of the inn, high up Mount Mitake, makes you feel like you are above the clouds and helps you to unwind immediately, and there are plenty of hiking trails easily walkable in a few hours that allow you to view magnificent waterfalls and a lovely natural river feature called the rock garden. Though we were only able to stay one night, we were able to relax and recharge completely. We are already planning our return next year!

A true retreat where you can refresh the soul

After visiting tokyo and kyoto, we planned a couple nights in the mountains outside of Mitake to relax, hike, and experience a more "traditional" Japanese setting. Our stay here was amazing. It was perfect. The food (breakfast and dinner) were outstanding, and totally home made. I feel like I could write an entire review on just the food because it was delicious. 

My wife, my brother, and my best friend and I arrived in Mitake from Tokyo via train. We used our JR passes, which was great. We then took a short bus ride (the stop was right by the train station and the ride only cost about 280 yen), from Mitake to the cable car, which took us up to the mountain. After getting off the cable car (about 1100 yen round trip), which in itself is a fun experience, we walked for about 10 minutes to reach Nanzanso. 

The highlights:
- breakfast and dinner homemade and delicious
- the bath was so relaxing and even had a view of the mountains
- the rooms were clean, well kept, and had outstanding views. 
- we got to wear yukata robes when in the inn. 
- we hiked to the top of a nearby mountain, which had more great views - for our hike, our host made snacks for us to take with us
- our host - she was so kind, warm, courteous, welcoming, and thoughtful. Even with our limited Japanese and her limited english, we managed to bond by sharing pictures, and using our cell phones and google translate to let her know how appreciative we were and how much we loved the experience. 

I can't recommend this enough. It was by far and away the best part of the trip, and our trip was awesome.
