Hina no Yakata Matsunoi

Staff at front desk are really helpful. They are waiting for us because we arrived when around are dark already.  The room itself is spacious, good condition and clean.  We can choose the time for breakfast, and it is ready before the time 10 minutes.  Breakfast is a highlight, too.  It came in a traditional servings style.  Good experience and lovely memory here.  

a little bit far from the central area.  but the room's condition is very good.the space was spacious. and you can feel relax and peaceful here.

The staff are polite and cheerful. They introduce their room and point-to-note to us patiently. They have separate hot spring. Both the changing room and the hot spring are clean and tidy.

We stayed here for 3 nights. The room was spacious for 2. The food (dinner and breakfast) are good. Service is impeccable. We really love the onsen. As this is a small ryokan with less than 20 rooms, the onsen is mostly empty when we used it over the 3 days. 
The bus stop (uejigane kogen) is just right in front of the ryokan, but the frequency is every 2 hrs. You may contact the ryokan to pick you up at "fukuchi onsen guchi" bus stop if u miss the scheduled bus that stops at uejigane kogen.

Although the location is a bit far from city, it's worth to go. Room is clean, tidy, relax. Food is very good. And there is private bath for couple which cost $2460 / 45 mins.

The Room is Big and clean, staffs are kind and helpful, the hot springs is good too!

For some reasons, we were late for check-in. While we call the hotel for that situation, the stuff was nice and waiting for us. He told us don't be in rush and safe drive. They are friendly and it was a good living experience.

It was a last minute decision (1 month before our trip) when we made the booking as we wanted to try something different and to stay in a traditional Japanese hotel with onsen.Turn out to be a real treat and quite frankly a warm memory.The place is quite well maintained, our room was spacious and comfortable. We had unlimited use of the onsen which had both indoor and outdoor facilities - you can see the mountains. Food will be difficult to obtain outside since the location is quite remote. Nevertheless we ordered a dinner set meal which consists of hida beef and was serve right to us in our room.Service was very nice from all the hotel staffs right from the doorstep, eventhough English was spoken in minimum but they managed to make us feel welcomed.Matsunoi Hotel is situated away from all the hustle and bustle of the city and if you need a place a relax and unwind, it comes highly recommended.

Finding this place is a bit tricky since i can't read japanese and the website directions are all in Jap!

Nevertheless we figured it out and took the public transport which stops at the bustop just outside.

Upon arrival we were greeted warmly by an elderly staff who was very nice, which made us feel very welcomed. Was served green tea while checking in

We stayed in a traditional room just like a Japanese home, with a hall, dining area, separate toilet area - quite spacious. Traditional yutakas were provided, adding to the overall experience.

We explored the charming house, which has a fireplace, common area for relaxing, and of course the highlight is the use of the onsens - which has both indoor and outdoor ones. During our stay it was not crowded at all so we had ample freedom to relax.

We took the dinner set which comprises of hida beef which was serve to our room and cooked for us. Note though that the nearby surrounding area has no shops that you can go to due to the remote location.

A worthy mention are the staffs which were very courteous and warm even though not much English was spoken (there was only one girl who was quite fluent though)

All in all, the 1 night stay at Matsunoi was very memorable and we hope to return again at a different season.

Nice Hospitality Traditional Hotel

Located quietly up the slope in the fringe of the onsen town, Matsunoi is an ideal place for a retreat.  We went there in a low season, and the place offer the peaceful environment for us to explore nearby attractions without feeling like a tourist. 

Special credits go to the young man who helped us make the tatami bed and serve us in-room dinners.  His every act is the best way to illustrate the essence of Japanese culture: precise yet elegant.  Food was very good, fresh and local.

Overall speaking, extremely value for money.  Good choice for a chill-out.

Traditional onsen hotel with warm hosptaility

Quiet traditional onsen

Great experience staying in a traditional tatami room with low tables and futons on the floor. The traditional breakfast and dinner were a fabulous experience. The onsen was lovely, bathing in hot water looking at the snow covered mountains we used the public one but on both occasions had it to ourselves.

This ryokan has an amazing staff and offers superb local Japanese cuisine. It is in a rural location (bus stops once every 2 hours), and is therefore peaceful. The onsen experience is relaxing and the rooms are authentically Japanese in style. 

Be prepared to dine at the ryokan (there is a one course option - around 2000 yen pp for delicious hida beef (no vegetarian option) - if you do not want the very filling & exquisite 3 course meal offered every night for around 6500 yen pp). 

The reason I only give this ryokan 4 stars is because everything is so dated & the room was quite cold. It was incredibly authentic, but the whole place would benefit from a renovation. At least the duvets were warm at night & the futons were comfortable. 

The Japanese alps are beautiful and I would recommend this ryokan to anyone searching for something off the beaten path. Takayama makes for a great day trip and the area is certainly worth exploring. 

In terms of getting here, book an express bus from Tokyo to Hirayu Onsen, then change to the local Nohi bus to Shinhotaka and get off at Ue Ji Gane Kogen (or get picked up at Fukuchi Onsen). 

Authentic ryokan hospitality in a by-gone world

We spent 2 wonderfully relaxing nights at this haven of tranquility surrounded by mountains just 1 hour's scenic bus ride from historic Takayama and half an hour to the Shinhotaka ropeway, a double cable car ride up the snow covered mountain in the other direction. Buses run hourly from Takayama bus centre adjacent to Takayama train station but cease early evening, so there's plenty of time to take dinner and relax in the hotel's own indoor/outdoor hot spring pools (separate facilities for men & women, though the private wooden or ceramic bath can be booked). 
Suggest checking the Nohi bus timetable from Takayama to Shinhotaka before booking your train ticket to ensure there is a bus stopping at Ue Ji gane Kogen departing after your train's arrival! Tickets can be purchased at the office counter (2/3 day combination tickets may offer better value) or as you exit the bus. If you have time over there's a cafe with free wifi across the road.
The inkeeper speaks little English but runs a tight ship and is attentive to every detail that will enhance the enjoyment of your stay. From the warm welcome with heated washcloths and refreshing cup of green tea hearthside, to extra logs thrown into the foyer stove at night the moment we stood around it. On departure day he even drove alongside the bus stop and offered us a ride down the mountain to a better connection point! Kimono clad staff move inconspicuously and efficiently about their business, and the ryokan serves delicious traditional food (and drinks) in your tatami mat room (ours had ensuite facilities). Our cheerful room attendant Aki appeared to be the only staff member who speaks English and worked hard to explain everything. Futon linens and kimonos were refreshed daily. Towels also, though these are small! Our stay at Hina no Yakata Matsunoi was a unique experience and the highlight of our trip.

Excellent Stay in a Ryokan up in the Hills

Unforgettable Experience

The hotel has a cozy lobby with fireplace, couches, and books/magazines. The room was huge! It had individually separated toilet, basin, and shower & bathtub areas. It's even got two screen doors inside the room, separating the entrance, bedroom, and window area. The room was clean and comfortable.The hotel location is hard to reach without a car. You can hardly find anything within walking distance.A couple of the hotel staff spoke good English. All of the staff are friendly and made us feel very welcomed.The hotel has indoor & outdoor onsen area that operates throughout the night. The onsen is the only downside to this hotel. The onsen shower area had tabs that were full of white water-residue. The toiletries were not of brand-name ones, and there were no face-wash, toner, or cream provided at the onsen area. We went to the onsen fairly late at night, and the outdoor onsen had no lights on and it was too dark to even see where we were stepping. This could be quite dangerous as the outdoor onsen is made of natural rock formations, and guests could easily trip over in the darkness.Also, the corridor outside our guest room had no lights on at night. It seems like this is an act to save electricity for the hotel, but a motion-sensing light would be well appreciated especially since the onsen opens throughout the night (so there will be guests roaming around).

Large room, friendly staff, underwhelming onsen

We had a wonderful time at Hina no Yakata Matsunoi. The hotel was charming, the meals served in our room were some of the best that we ate while in Japan, and the hot springs downstairs were delightful. The best part of our stay was our waiter Di. He was funny, and charming. We looked forward to seeing him everyday.  Especially when he gave us our daily Japanese "lesson".
