Shirakaba

Excellent time with friends. Lovely lil town. Snow was great! Easy to get around and super friendly. Rental in shirakaba, the friendliest, trendy and best staff and equipment. Can’t wait to come back to Nozawa Onsen to skii. Recommended. 

If you're looking for 5 star luxury with all amenities then this is not for you.  However, if you're  a skier after a traditional Japanese ryokan experience that is close to the best restaurants, a short walk to the moving walkway to the Hikage gondola, then this is the place to be, if you can get in !   There is traditional Japanese breakfast available, but if that's not your style, there's a great coffee shop next door owned by the same family that serves delicious breakfast burgers, pancakes etc.  The rooms are basic, some with private toilet, some without. There are no private bathrooms which will put some people off, but that's the way it is. Yes, the walls are thin, but that didn't stop us from getting a good nights sleep every night as we were tired from skiing - no-one seemed to be staying up late at night to watch TV !  The staff are friendly and helpful, all part of the family
 They also have their own ski hire shop, situated at the base of the gondola with a good selection of up to date ski & snowboard equipment, as well as a place to store your ski equipment and a drying room for your boots, for your convenience. It's definitely an advantage not to have to carry your equipment up and down every day, especially when you've expended all your energy on the hill during the day.

Stayed for 6 nights in this warm and clean ryokan. Its basic by western standards However if you're here to ski then it is everything you need. Breakfast is very traditional so not for fussy westerners but good and filling for a day on the slopes. Ski racks, ski maintenance area and drying room are awesome. As are the on site onsens at the end of the day.
Bit of a hike to Hikage gondola with ski gear but there is a regular shuttle bus to Nagasaka one block over which we found the best way to get up to the ski area.
Family run friendly place with enough English to get by. Would stay here again.

Comfortable and very convenient

Traditional ryokan

Awesome time 

Labelled as traditional which can translate into very small, and uncomfortable. Not suited for a ski/board trip.

No power in bathroom and nowhere really to get ready. No hooks to hang wet gear. No curtains, so light was an issue. Walls were very thin, so if you have noisy neighbours, expect to be woken up.

Recommend ear plugs and eye patches.

Wifi didn’t work in room.

Don’t mean for this to sound quite so negative, as staff were nice and if you’re after traditional accommodation, this is good for you.

If not doing a snow holiday probably quite nice as well.

Very basic and small (with traditional tatami)

GOOD:
1. Near public onsen 
2. Near ski resort
3. Simple but clean
4. Bath was excellent 
5. Very roomy 

IMPROVE
1. Better hospitality (no breakfast, no dinner. Not even a beer.) 
2. Not very comfortable gas air system.
3. Windows are typicall seal badly from cold weather. 

Overall, as a family  the stay was comfortable and thanks to the many restaurants the lack of food in hotel wasn't big of a deal.
