I participated and finished Nara Marathon 3 times. Each time I stayed at this hostel, because it is a 5 minute walk away from the starting grounds. It is perfect as you are not tired out before the race starts and you can leave your baggage and take a bath after the race. And the price is very reasonable.

Reception staff were also efficient, and they provide clear explanations on do's/don'ts so all guests behave as expected and not disturb others. 

The hostel is spacious (designed to accommodate sports teams looking to use adjacent track and field and athletic facilities) - has a huge mess hall, assembly hall and even separate communal furo (hot baths) for men and women.

The mess hall has refrigerators and microwave guests can use so you can walk to the grocery or convenience store (about 200-300 meters away), buy food/drinks and store them at the hostel. They served japanese style buffet breakfast when I stayed there, and it was included in the package.

It's located a bit out of the way, but the bus stops right in front so it's not an issue to get to JR Nara Station and explore the vicinity or connect to farther places by train.

Best place to stay - if you're running the Nara Marathon

First thing first.  This is a Youth Hostel so the set-up was very basic.  Bunk beds, commune toilets, and commune baths.  We were traveling through Nara in their busiest time of the year-New Year's Eve and everything was booked up.  These guys offered the entire room for our family of 4 (the room had 4 bunk beds).  This isn't their usual practice but around New Year, they offer each room to entice families to stay (as you would in a hotel).  When we walked in, there was a blackboard that described the services that they offered on Dec. 31, which included "Toshikoshi soba", visit to nearby temple for ringing of the bell ("Jyoya no kane") and breakfast the following morning of "Ozouni", which is a soup with mochi.  All very traditional and cultural experience in Japan.  The staff was very friendly and helpful and served us the soba and breakfast as well as drive us to the nearby temple and stayed with us through the ringing of the bell and drove us back past mid-night.  The next morning, one of the staff at the lobby drove us to the train station, as we were catching the bullet train to go to Hiroshima.  Kudos to all the staff that made our stay there extra special!!
