The room was large and well appointed. You sleep on futons on the floor.  There is also a bath and a toilet, which is unusual for onsen.

There is an internal onsen bath on the 3rd floor but what makes this place unusual is that there is an outdoor bath up the hill where you take a mini funicular to reach the location.  

We had a Kaiseke dinner in the hotel where they feature local ingredients like tofu, potato and fish.  To be honest, some of the dishes are an acquired taste but they were exquisitely presented and dinner staff were good. The wagyu beef was especially tasty. 

Staff are friendly and most can converse in English, which is a plus.  The young female owner also has a good voice and sang a lovely song during dinner.

The organized a short 20 minute tour after dinner to the vine bridge nearby though it was too dark to see much and the bridge was closed. But it was interesting riding the old school bus.

Wifi is unfortunately weak and the Ipad was not able to log in at all.  Wifi did not work for my Iphone in the dining room and only worked in the lobby and the bedroom.   There is a souvenir store in the lobby area where you can buy local produce like snacks, apparel and ice cream.

Lovely Outdoor Onsen And Friendly Staff

The customer service and attention to detail were the outstanding! Honestly this is the best hotel I have ever been (and I am well traveled) the staff were super nice and they listened and went the extra mile to make our stay the best we ever experienced. They gave us excellent food and took their time to ask if we didn’t like anything so they could provide food to our liking but it was already great food! The onsen upstairs is gorgeous with an amazing view of the mountains and the Japanese style room is excellent. This hotel deserve more stars! We did drive from Osaka and it was 200% worth the trip. I only have good words to describe this place. We left with a warm heart and we didn’t want to leave. I will come back in a heart beat! It is going to be hard for any other hotel to top their customer service. There are also nice things to do in the area like the scarecrow village and adventure park.

We arrived at the hotel & was greeted by the staff so warmly as if we were their long lost relatives. 
The receptionist spoke perfect English during check in & voluntarily upgraded our room. I suppose they were informed that we were there to celebrate my birthday.

The place was clean, the service was excellent & matching that of a 5 star hotel. 

Upon settling down, we went straight to the rotenburo, which is the outdoor onsen, a hot spring bath, that overlooked the mountain & nature. As the rotenburo was situated on the mountain top above the Ryoken, we had to take a cable car which was connected within the hotel in order to reach it. 

The kaiseki meal for dinner was sumptuous & uniquely Japanese of course. Every dish was explained in detail with much effort. The diners were also seated spaciously  in the common dining hall with lots of privacy between them.

We were also entertained by a lady staff who sang a Japanese folk song that created that atmosphere which complemented the authentic Japanese meal. 

It was a relaxing & wonderful Ryoken for us.

We were supposed to stay for 2 nights. Unfortunately, we had to abort the stay as my mom had passed on the same night. The staff was so helpful to arrange for us a taxi to send us to the Kochi  airport at 0300 hrs to catch the first flight back to Singapore where we came from.

What was surprising was that the hotel even refunded us the one night room rate  which we had paid but were unable to continue with the stay. 

We will highly recommend visitors to stay there if they are visiting that area. It is only an hour train ride from Kochi train station & to alight at Oboke station. There’s a direct bus from the Oboke station or you can call a cab which cost about ¥300 which will take about 20 min to arrive. The cab’s companies telephone numbers are written at train the station desk for visitors’ information.

We chose this hotel for our visit to Oboke because of the outdoor onsen, and it did not disappoint! 

You can take a bus from the Oboke station, however the frequency is not high, hence we took a taxi which cost slightly less than 3000 yen. You can walk to the Kazurabashi bridge from the hotel (approximately 15mins), but there wasn't a proper walkway for pedestrian. However there wasn't much traffic so it didn't feel dangerous walking along the main road. The hotel provides a night tour (8pm every night) to the bridge and the Biwa falls, and the friendly driver helped to take pics, and stopped at a spot for star gazing! 

Dinner and breakfast were included in the stay. During dinner, the Okami sang us a beautiful traditional song, and chat with us to ensure we enjoy ourselves. The food was well prepared and was made from regional produce.

The onsen was the highlight. You can a take a cable car up to the outdoor onsen (there's stairs if you want to), which has the most beautiful mountain view. There's a lodge for hot tea after the bath, and a footbath where you can sit and enjoy the view. If you are visiting during winter like we did, I would suggest washing yourself in the indoor bath, have a quick soak to warm yourself up, throw on your yukata, then head up quickly to the outdoor onsen. On our first soak, we made the mistake of showering outdoor and it was freezing, although we did warmed up in no time after going into the onsen. There's only 2 showers in the outdoor onsen, so if you might have to wait for your turn if there's a crowd.

We enjoyed the stay and the onsen, and would highly recommend this hotel if you're looking for a great onsen experience.

Beautiful onsen

Lucky that we have chosen this hotel for our stay in Oboke, because the photo does not look too attractive in hotel booking web sites. The reason we choose this hotel was it's the nearest hotel to the bridge and offer night tour at night to the bridge. Once we arrived the hotel, we noticed that the room is clean and bright. But the most attractive is their "outdoor onsen in the sky" (direct translation from their Japanese character), the view was just amazing. One of the best view of all the outdoor onsen that I have ever been. There were 2 times during my one night stay that I can enjoy the onsen alone!! Even though the hotel was full being the week before the golden week in Japan. So good that we now planning to go back in coming Autumn to enjoy the beautiful mountain view again.
真高興我們選了這溫泉酒店，雖然在訂房網的照片拍得一點也不吸引，但到達後，你會發現在酒店後山上的露天溫泉風景一流，經由酒店的電梯/纜車?直達，十分方便，秋天有紅葉時一定要再來一次！

Wow, what a treat!  The location is spectacular.  We drove & found it quite easily (with the Sat Nav) & the staff jumped to take our bags & park the car - and everything got better from there!
Two nights was not enough.....and we didn't even use the Onsen as we ran out of time.
The food is great, as is all the service.
Can't recommend this place enough.
