Auberge Mori no Kobito

We (a group of 5 adults and 1 kid) stayed 2 nights at a private log house.  I think all 5 star reviews here articulate our experience.  Hatsumi and her family are wonderful hosts and the accommodation was comfy and warm for us to live there.  We enjoyed every meal prepared by them.  The food are terrific and you can feel the details attended to the customers.  My family members and I cannot recommend 森のこびと enough. Only complaint was we had to leave.

This small Auberge is located west side of Mt.Aso. When we enter this building, we need to off the shoes. (A lot of slippers prepared)
There are two family bathes, each has inside bath and outside bath. That is hot-springs. You can take bath anytime when the sign in front of door is [Vacancy].
 We stay the room on the corner on 2nd floor. It has 2 big semi-double bed, TV, eclectic kettle, lavatory, toilet, 2 windows, hair dryer, 2 bath towels and 2 face towels.
And you can drink water from spring of ASO.

 Meals are very beautiful, 5 dishes for dinner. Scallop with fresh tomato source, Onion soup, papillote of porgy with herbs, Beef of Aso with brown source, dissert (it contains 4 types of sweets). And we can select a lot of wine and sparking. We can order them by glass or half-bottle or full-bottle. That is very reasonable, because full bottle is too much...
 
However, there are a lot of large size resort like 100 rooms in ASO, meal is not so good. We can eat so tasty food only in Small Auberge like here.

ちょうど桜の季節に宿泊しました。場所ですが、阿蘇山西側斜面をだいぶ登ったところです。（西登山道栃木線）

宿泊したのが日曜日ということもあり、空いていました。ティピカルでちょっとアンティークなペンションのようなオーベルジュです。くつは、入り口で預ける形です。館内はスリッパで、部屋ではスリッパを脱ぐ形になります。

まず、お風呂ですが、貸切風呂になってます。内湯と小さい露天風呂もあります。空いていれば入れます。

部屋は２階の角部屋、ツインです。かなり広くて、ソファ、液晶テレビ、洗面台、クローゼット、トイレ付き。ベッドも大きくて、快適です。電気ケトルもあります。窓も２方向にあります。宿泊した日は雨だったのですが、もし晴れていれば眺望が楽しめたと思います。タオルはバスタオルとフェイスタオルの２種類。ドライヤー付き。ちなみに部屋の水は、阿蘇の湧き水です。

お料理は2食ついてましたが、オーベルジュだけあって、美味しい～！夜はフレッシュトマトソースが美味しいホタテの前菜、たっぷり炒めた香ばしいオニオングラタンスープ、ハーブと鯛の甘さがマッチした天草の鯛の包み焼き、赤牛にデザート（なんと4種！）でした。バランスも分量もちょうどよく大変満足でした。特にパンが麦の甘みが感じられてとても美味しいです。おかわりも出来ますので、パンは外せません。特筆すべきはワインについて。スパークリング、白赤全てにハーフボトルで頼めるワインが2種類づつくらいあります。ワイン飲みたいけど、スパークリングがなかったり、フルボトルだと多過ぎたりという事が多いので、ハーフで頼めるのは非常に助かります。あと、結構安いです。

朝食も、オムレツにサラダに小さいヨーグルト、美味しいパン、と美味しかったです。
今回はフライトの関係で朝食を早くしてもらったのですが、快く応じていただけて大変助かりました。

あ、マンガとDVDやミニゲームもあって暇つぶしも出来ます。

阿蘇にはまた来るので、次もここにします。いくつか大規模ホテルが有りますが、料理を考えるとこちらが良いです。

We had family trip in early June. We loved their log house and it was very comfortable and spacious enough for 6 adults. 
We love the meals there. They all tasted great. I still couldn't forget the self made ice cream there: ))) I want more! !!! 
Thank you the owner who was so kind to send me back the T-shirt and charger I left behind. It means a lot to us. 
We will definitely recommend people to stay in such lovely place. 
Last but not least, there were broad games provided...we really appreciate that  

Although I knew that the hotel is a western style one and they serve western food, but I didn't actually know that they serve wonderful french cuisines only. So i was stunned when i see my home country meal served in such a remote place in the mountain in far east country. To my surprise, each dish was superb. Some reminded me of my mother's cooking and others reminded me of three star restaurant in Paris. Actually, it was far far better than good restaurant in France. I would give the chef three stars. It is really "must try". 
To my surprise, the chef was a pretty young  lady who speaks a little bit of English. At the end of dinner, she served deserts and had a little chat with her guests around, so I guessed that some guests know her pretty well. It means that she has frequent customers although the hotel locates in the heart of mountain. 

The service was very much attentive. Although the attender does not speak English at all, we managed to communicate with gestures alright, and it was kind of funny. He was super polite and speaks Japanese with the typical gesture that we foreigners expect. 

The room was pretty spacious  because I asked a bigger room so they accommodated me in a premium room which costs you 1000 yen more. Later, I peeped into the smaller room but compared to the standard Japanese accommodation in the similar pricing, I found it quite good.

The bath was quite amazing, in the bathroom, there was two bath tab inside of the building and outside of the building connected to each other. Guests takes turn to use it. There were two bathrooms and there were only 6 guests room in the main building so it wasn't a problem. You simply jump in when it is not occupied and lock it from inside. 

I drove to the top of the mountain which is called Nakadake at night and in the early morning before sunrise. It is something like 15 minuted drive, pretty close. 
At night, the stars were amazingly beautiful, and in the morning, there were wild deers hopping around in the mist. Unfortunately, couldn't see the sunrise as I was in the wrong direction.

Later, i found out that this is a family owned and the attender was a brother of the chef. And their mother appeared to talk with me at the check out counter with the photos in her hand. The photo that she took when she traveled to Paris. of course she speaks only in Japanese, but I was very touched.

The price is really cheap knowing the service. I recommend to stay here, no doubt.

1. We stayed in the log house . It is very clean and  spacious . 5 single beds in the bedroom at level 1 . Loft can accommodate up to 4 futons .  It is located just next to the main house .  There is an intercom in the log house which the host can inform you when meals are ready . I thought that was cool . Games such as donut reversi and card games  are available in the log house . DVDs can also be loaned from the main house . English DVDs available . 
2. Young lady host is a chef and cooks really well . She speaks some English . We had a 6 courses dinner .  Bread with butter , scallops with cooked greens , cold potato soup , sea bream with ratatouille baked in parchment paper , steak and lastly 4 pieces of petite desserts per person ( sorbet , choux , banana cake and green tea mousse)  . Everything cooked to perfection . 
3 . Breakfast was super delicious too . There were 3 pieces of different bread for each person , served with butter and jam. Omelette with potato and cheese inside , pumpkin soup , yoghurt , salad and hotdogs . And of course free flow of juices, coffee and tea. 
4. It is not difficult to find the place , but no English sign board , so look out for the japanese name instead . No walking trail around the area . Huge bath in the log house for you to relax .
