22 reviewsWe were greeted from the street by two older Japanese ladies who led us to the inn, which is up at the very end of an atmospheric alleyway path (well-lit with other establishments around). The staff do not really speak English, but the owner can understand a little bit, and they were all extremely welcoming. The food was incredible - both dinner and breakfast stuffed me and had so much variety! I'd never had a meal where the entire table was covered in different dishes - I honestly had no idea where to start eating! They serve 'basashi', which is the local specialty (raw horse meat), so if you absolutely do not want to try this make sure you know which it is so you can avoid it. However, it was surprisingly delicious, so if you are feeling adventurous and want to experience the local cuisine, try it out! We had a room on the third floor, and while the inside of the inn had a slight weathered feeling to it, the room was fantastic - very clean, new, spacious, and with a nice view of the river/town. With sliding paper doors and windows and the distinct, soothing smell of the tatami mats, it was the perfect Japanese experience for us. We wore the provided yukata (left side over right!) and enjoyed the hotel's private baths. Be sure to ask when the times are for the outdoor bath - there is only one, and at times it is men or women only. Also, if there are some harvested, guests can try steaming sweet potatoes for free in the hot spring steam by the river in the morning! They were a delicious treat to have on our way out the next day. Finally, don't forget to try the special pudding made personally by the hotel owner's wife - 250 yen, or 400 yen with coffee! It was just an amazing stay overall, and I highly recommend it. It would be helpful if someone in your group can speak basic Japanese, though.
