This hotel offers an exceptional level of hospitality and service. The staff were all wonderfully courteous and helpful. The food was a delightful introduction into traditional Japanese cooking without any of the too difficult options that may be daunting for western tastes. The hot spring baths are awesome and especially appreciate the private onsen that comes with the room. Can’t wait to come back.

I picked this cause it was close to the airport on the map and I just needed some place to stay overnight. Ask hotel directly for single guest rate. Great traditional feel, only ten guest quarters. Check-in is a counter in a little hut. Open kitchen with beautiful vegetables and eggs set out, and chickens roaming around. Short hike to waterfall and their own chicken farm. Rooms are traditional with private sink and toilet. Open the windows to listen to the river. Dinner was served in common dining room during my visit. Can take tea on the outdoor veranda. The shared onsen facilities are awesome. There are no "real" shower facilities but the onsen water doesn't have a strong smell (e.g. sulfur) so body smells ok afterward. Facility is open to day visitors for lunch and onsen. The workers are incredibly friendly and pleasant to chat with.  Food is pretty good. Vegetables from their garden are super crispy and fresh. Taxi arranged by hotel is a contracted rate. Wonderful rustic stay. 12:00 checkout and 14:00 check-in kind of unusual for Japan but the more time to relax here the better! WiFi works ok except in dining room.

This is an authentic family-run ryokan in the midst of the  Kirishima mountains and valleys. We had a large room with a private balcony overlooking the river containing our own onsen (hot spring bath). The ryokan is pure Japanese, thus futons and tatami mats and strict adherence to the "shoes off" policy. Wasurenosato Gajyoen has a delightful, small gourmet restaurant .The surrounding area has excellent opportunities for mountain and crater lake hiking with trekking guides available. One note: the staff is very friendly and welcoming , but speak/understand only very limited English. But for those of us seeking a true Japanese experience in the beautiful country-side, this ryokan is an excellent choice.

I was planning a few days vacation in a ryokan/onsen hotel on Kyushu and had booked a reservation at an establishment that was way too pretentious. After reflection and a good look at the Relais et Chateaux website, I found this place instead.Thank heavens.

If you like excellent food, excellent friendly service, and a place to just chill and sit in mineral water (none of that chlorinated nonsense here), this is the place for you. 

It more than merits the Relais et Chateaux stamp of approval, in fact, I wish more of the Relais et Chateaux in France had the character and charm of this wonderful place.

I will try very hard to return.

This traditional Japanese Ryokan is a collection of self-contained chalets set in delightful, almost tropical, grounds.
The room we had was well equipped, clean and comfortable, with Japanese style seating but, unusually, a western style bed.
The on-site restaurant served excellent food for both dinner and breakfast.
Service, like most Japanese establishments, was impeccable.
