Stayed at Nasu Hihgland Resort Youth Hostel as a stop-over before going hiking to Mt. Nasu/ Mt. Asahi. The hostel is very clean and homey (recommend the Japanese style rooms!), and the owners are very very kind and helpful. They helped us plan our entire trip to the mountain and even accompanied us to make sure we were on the right track! Highly recommend staying here if you're looking for a base out of which to go hiking around the area. To get there, take the train to Kuroiso station, then bus headed to Nasu Yomoto, get off at Shimo Moriko, then a 15 min walk. I recommend using google maps for the walking portion.

From Tokyo or Ueno station ride on Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train and transfer to JR Tohoku line ( same as Utsunomiya line ) at Nasu-Shiobara station. Get off at Kuroiso station and take a bus toward Nasu-Yumoto or Nasu-Yumoto Ropeway. Get off from the bus at Shimo-Moriko bus stop and 10 min walk from here to hotel ( If you get on JR Tohoku line from Tokyo, it is cost profitable )
