Stayed in a traditional Japanese 1 room accommodation with shared bathroom and shower/bath. Owners very welcoming and helpful. The owner lady spoke virtually no English and we can speak virtually no Japanese, but we got by with lots of hand signals! Accommodation very clean and tidy. We had half board and did not regret this as the quality and quantity of traditional Japanese food on offer was exceptional. Dish after dish after dish kept being brought to the table. Fish, meat, vegetables, pickles, miso, rice, sweets all prepared and presented beautifully. 
Strict times for bathing at the inn and we used the Onsen about a 10-minute drive away. The owner of the inn gave us a discount voucher for the onsen. If you have never experienced an onsen then this would be a great place to start. Just read upon onsen etiquette and prepare for nude bathing. Indulging in this Japanese pastime can become addictive!
So, in summary; lovely, good value accommodation with excellent traditional Japanese food.

Excellent clean homely inn, with amazing food.

This small inn is nestled into the cross street just off the main street about 2 minutes away from the tourist office next to the train station.  It is a wooden building that looks two buildings wide and 2 stories high.  A TLC type of building from the outside, being wood it gets lots of wear and tear, but it looks pleasant.  We had asked the tourist office for directions, as there were no signs in English, all written in Kanji.  The tourist office let the place know that we were on our way, and they were out on the street to locate us.  They brought us in, showed us our room where we put our stuff away.  They let us check in early.  One or two other guests were staying so the place was fairly empty.  There are only rooms on the 2nd story, as the first is the restaurant, where outsiders can come for meals and we had our b-fasts.  The restaurant is reached by exiting the inn and then  going back inside, which is luckily located under the same awning, as our first morning was rainy. 
Upstairs there was only one toilet and a separate bath and shower room, with a common sink area outside the shower room.  There was a toilet room downstairs, tho she didn’t show us that as if we weren’t really supposed to use it.  I assume with all the rooms occupied it would be an option, as there are 5 or 6 guest rooms and one toilet is not enuff. Also the outside sink area has a normal sink with good lighting and then right along side is a trough sort of sink with 4 faucets.  No hot water for any of the sinks, but they have some good paper towels to dry off your hands, Q-tips and liquid soap for all.  The only bath/shower area has  a room to put towels and clothes separate from the wet area.  The problem with this set up is there is only one shower, so that even if you go in with your spouse or others of the same gender, you have to stand around, and if the inn is busy, with the limited times to use the bath area, 7-9AM and 5-10PM. So for those who take  evening showers, there is more time, but for those of us who like morning showers, it is a bit of a quandary or would be if there were more guests.  The shampoo and bath gel are all in Kanji, so had no idea which was conditioner and which shampoo and which bath gel.  We did get normal sized bath towels with hand towels as well, and there were toothbrushes, paste, razors, and shower caps.  Everything was clean and our room was spacious with a low table and seating cushions.  The futons were in the closet with duvets and blankets, sheets, yukatas and haori, and pillows.  The duvets were square and somewhat small, but with blankets it all worked out, esp as it was cold with the rain storm that came arrived.  The futons were nice, and there was the opp to put down 1,2,3 or 4 layers to pad the floor, and oodles of blankets.  There was a flat screen TV, tho with all Japanese programs that wasn’t really helpful, not to mention we never use the TV in the west anyway.  There was real tea to steep, a hot water kettle, and places to hang up clothes.  We also had two big windows with screens for hot days, tho one was letting in bugs as it was torn significantly, and then paper windows to keep the temp constant.  The closet had a painted scene on it which was really nice, tho with a bit of scratches here and there.  The inn could probably use some TLC but otherwise, the room was in fair shape.  The overall effect was comfortable and spacious.  Very light.  There was a fan and heater and a/c tho we didn’t use it.  The woman who greeted us was very gracious and answered our questions on different aspects of the futon storage, bath room, bfast with her limited English and sign language.  Going to a rural area and staying at a small family run inn is bound to end up with everyone trying to communicate with limited language skills but energy and friendliness.  We had a good sleep while the traffic noise was gone during the night and even after 6 as everyone was home from wok, and no one went out.  The breakfast was large, but not too much.  We had  salmon, miso soup, salad, rice and tea, plus they cooked the egg square, which tasted nice, and offered us some veggies which were tasty.  We also got a potato type salad and ended up with enuff food to fill but not overfill. The bed was nicely firm and warm, and I would recommend this place to stay.

We stayed at Miyake with another couple we were traveling with from Hawaii. Although my wife and I are seasoned Japan travelers, it was the first visit for our friends. The two nights at Miyake were pleasantly memorable for all of us. This is a real bargain in a great location near the station with incredible meals that we are still talking about. While the owners barely speak English, you should get by just fine since they know how to treat you right. Our rooms were comfortable and quiet enough, clean and smoke-free. The dinners are prepared by the owner/chef as if you are royalty and you may feel like it afterwards. It was my wife's birthday and they even gave her a special gift. This was our second trip to Tsuwano and would absolutely return to Miyake if we come again. Highly recommended if you are looking to experience old Japan!
