I've never stayed such a terrible hotel ever.
As I heard that this is a No1 hotel in Tsuwano,I chose this hotel.
The room was very old, small, damp and dirty.
I saw several cockroaches in my room and I got a tick bite there.
The furniture in the room was so old and spooky.
It was not worth the price, 9800JPN!
Too expensive!
It was said that this hotel had big bath with onsen.
But the water smelled a kind of chlorine.
I advice not to stay this hotel.

しかし部屋は、古く、汚い、湿っぽく、古めかしい家具が置かれています。
履いてきた靴は玄関の入口に置かれ修学旅行のような感じです。
温泉は全く良いのか分からず、レジオネラ対策なのか塩素の匂いがしました。
水も出てませんでしたし循環式なのでしょう。
津和野では他にホテルがないせいいか、強気な価格でお値段には全く見合ってないと思いました。
ドアにはチェーンも内鍵もなく不用心です。
津和野で宿泊するなら古民家１軒貸しがいいようです。

We wanted to visit Tsuwano as it is an historical castle town somewhat off the beaten path.  There are several places to stay, but we thought we would try Wataya based on the descriptions on the various travel websites.  Initially we were disappointed by the condition of the exterior of the ryokan, as it was somewhat dreary compared to published photos.  Upon entering, we were warmly welcomed by our host (the owner's son) and given a hot cup of matcha and a traditional Tsuwano sweet.  He speaks some English, but we communicated in Japanese.  It is a charming traditional family run ryokan.  The lobby is full of artifacts, antiques and photos.  The corridors outside the rooms are softly lit and koto music plays in the background.  The rooms are comfortable with private bathrooms.  The communal bath is has an outdoor and indoor section.  Meals are served in the main dining room.  The food is locally sourced and reflects the local specialties; beautifully prepared and presented,  rustic, yet sophisticated.  The next morning 7am, our host provided a complimentary tour of 'hidden' spots where tourists do not usually go.  Seats are booked on a first come first served basis and only Japanese spoken.  Everything is within walking distance of the Wataya.  It was a wonderful experience.

Traditional ryokan, warm hospitality

After the earthquake, Dragonfly Tours, our Japan Tour company, rearranged us to stay here. Another terrific choice from Dragonfly Tours who can be relied upon for booking us into excellent hotels at a reasonable cost.This is our second trip with Dragonfly Tours, and will not be our last!
We slept on futons, which I found very comfortable. The room was large, separate toilet from the small bathroom. The Japanese baths were great, the small outside baths were the best. The 2 dinners and breakfasts we had were amazing- the choice, taste, quality of the food. and outstanding presentation
Our dietary needs were met perfectly..

A traditional Ryokan

I stayed here for 2 nights while on a Dragonfly tour.  The Ryokan is located about a 5 minute walk from the train station.  Tsuwano is a very small village, easy to walk around, and the accommodation is close to the main tourist sites, shops and restaurants.  The room was very big and I was lucky enough to score two chairs and a table at which to sit (at my age I find it difficult to sit on the floor).  There are hot spring baths on the top floor (outdoor and indoor).  The set meals (feasts!!) for breakfast were delicately prepared and presented.  The staff were very hospitable and went the extra mile to make our stay enjoyable and comfortable.  This accommodation would have to be one of the best that I have ever stayed in. Atmosphere and tranquility ++ Far superior to the sterile modern hotels of today. Only small blemish was the fact the internet did not work in the room, however, there were no problems on the ground floor.  If you are ever down this way I recommend you stay

Superb

We spent a day in this charming unspoiled, old town of Tsuwano in Shinane-Ken during our recent trip to Japan. We belatedly realized that you could visit this town in an old style train drawn by a steam locomotive from Shin Yamaguchi on Saturdays, although we were there on a Saturday. Wataya may be one of the tallest buildings in the village and it has great onsen (hot spring) baths on the top floor with a commanding views. The manager told us that his was only his hotel that had onsen in Tsuwano. 

As we were on December 19th, maybe in the lowest season of the year, there were a very few guests and we were able to enjoy the entire hot spring baths both outdoor and indoor all to ourselves each! Their multi-course dinner was simply great. 

We enjoyed our afternoon walk along the main street while watching Koi carp after visiting one of the museums.
