The 3.5-star review average (as of August 2017) for this place is really weird. I thought it was a 5-star experience for what it is: an onsen resort hotel. Extremely clean, everything seems to have been recently renovated, one of the employees speaks English quite well, very nice modern onsen baths, buffet meals were good by those standards, beautiful stream (that you can swim in) running behind the hotel, Yamazaki convenience store next door (only open 9 am to 7 pm). We were on a short trip so we could only stay one night, but if we came back to the area we'd definitely stay here again. 

We stayed one night here in order to get an early start to explore Sandankyo gorge (about an hour drive away, all the hotels at the gorge were booked). It was kind of a last minute booking, so we didn't have the highest expectations. But we were so pleasantly surprised when we arrived! There is a lovely stream with the clearest water running behind the property that you can swim in, surrounded by lush forest greenery. The baths were beautiful, including one outdoor bath. The Japanese style room was spacious and clean. The only thing was the breakfast and dinner buffet was a bit expensive for what you got, and the quality of the food was quite mediocre, but there's not much around the area. The room does have a fridge if you want to bring something, I suppose. A car is definitely preferable to get here and to explore the area, however the hotel seemed to be located right where the local bus starts and stops. There is also a large community center attached to the hotel that seems to hold a lot of events, although you will have to be able to speak Japanese in order to fully take advantage of it. In any case, this is a great getaway and we hope to be able to go again!

I am a Hawaii-born Japanese who can read and understand some Japanese.  My daughter and wife stayed here for 2 nights at the rate of $100 per person per day, which included breakfast and dinner buffet meals.  We slept on 3 large beds in a spacious room with air conditioning and were allowed unlimited access to the communal baths located in the hotel.  The room had an attached toilet and large washbasin but no bathing facility.  The front desk people can communicate in English but all of the hotel room informational notices were only in Japanese.  They told me that it was rather rare for non-Japanese to stay there.  The front entrance is closed from 11 pm till 6 am the next day, but there is a security guard who can let you in if you inform them ahead of time.  The hotel is located in a small mountainside town next to a small river and I did see several small restaurants and local drinking places nearby. If you wish to experience a stay in a quiet countryside onsen hotel, I would highly recommend this place but you should be able to read some Japanese to avoid misunderstandings.  My relative dropped us off at Yuki Lodge by private car but we rode an uncrowded rosen city bus from the hotel to the Itsukaichi train station for about 1 hour and 20 minutes.  That train station is west of the main Hiroshima station and it took us just another 15 minutes to reach Hiroshima City by local (futsuu) train o,  You can make reservations by phone but it probably would best if you use Japanese when doing so.
