Homely ryokan with a warm and welcoming service. They have answered my queries promptly and was really helpful when I was making reservations via their website. Had a really yummy Japanese breakfast and a nice comfortable stay. I also had an awesome onsen experience with my partner - it was snowing when I was there and I got to experience bathing in a lovely onsen with snow fall in the outdoor onsen together with my partner.  Highlight of my trip in Japan! Thank you  清重館  =) will be back when I am in Kusatsu again!


The location was a little bit of a walk from the bus terminal and the main part of town but we loved staying in this place. There were indoor and outdoor public and private baths, and it was a great touch to have the ability to make the public baths private between 9 pm and 8 am at no additional cost. We did the half board option for food and it was really great to experience traditional japanese cuisine for breakfast and dinner.

Good onsen, both private and public available. Traditional japanese(sleeping on the floor). Decent breakfast available.

Amazing and always smiling staff, great dinner and breakfast, and loved the private use of the baths, including the communal ones late at night.  A little far of a walk with luggage but still manageable.

Cute little traditional rooms, techno toilets, AMAZING traditional meal service if requested, gorgeous private baths, accommodating owner, a short walk to Yubatake. Kiyoshigekan also seemed to be the best price in town. I am very grateful we stayed here to experience our first ryoken.

The ryokan is located at 10 minutes walk from Yubatake and the Bus terminal station.

The place is a little bit old, but cozy and clean. The staff is nice and welcoming.

Our room was big, with a big window. Includes a toilet but no private shower. Shower can be found at the baths. There are 4 baths, 2 private and 2 public (men and women). Even though, after 21:00 the public baths can be used as private.

You can use the baths as many times as desired, without any charge. 

There is free wifi, and there are smoker rooms.

We enjoyed dinner and breakfast. The dinner was delicious, including sashimi or nabe with duck meat. The breakfast was traditional japanese, no westerner version, meaning that there is no coffee or bread, but rice , fish , and miso soup... There are some vending machines to buy coffee tho.

Very recommedable to enjoy a relaxing weekend.

Staff are really nice, and the breakfast is pretty good. You can easily commiunicate with staff even you don't understand Japanese.

Wonderful in-hotel onset! There are two small private onsen and two larger "public" onsen (men/women). If the private onsen are open, you can lock them and use them for yourself. Same goes for the larger onsen between 9pm-8am!The Japanese dinner and breakfast (an extra cost) were also delicious.It's a short 10 min walk to the bus terminal, and 15 min to the famous Yubatake. I'd stay here again!

it was located only 10mints distance from bus station and the hotel service was very nicely organised.onsen was a bit little but enough for small family or a couple.it was clean andgood for its price. never regret it to stay there.

Small walk from the center of town but it's a great place. Private and gender separated onsen. (hot spring) the food is great also. If you stay I suggest the food.

Awesome winter onsen experience

Parking available if reserved in advance, my room was traditional style, but no bathroom. That doesn't matter much as you'll be using the great onsen.After 9 pm their bigger onsen can be privately used. Owner spoke English and gave advice on what to visit, with a map and discount vouchers. As this was a last minute decision to go to, this was a godsend.

Great traditional Onsen hotel

I regret not being able fo have their dinner option that's said to be quite very worth its value. But the breakfast was so satisfying itself.

The rooms are traditional-looking and the onsen can be used privately depending on the time. Like the rest of Kusatsu, the waters here are therapeutic and comfortable especially on winter. My room offered a city view which I find special. Amenities are complete together with a Yukata but I wasn't able to ask if I can bring it outside to walk around with, though I know it'll be very cold because it's snowing.

I did not mind its distance from Yubatake, since I still chose this despite having other options, and I would've given 5 stars.

Maybe the service can be improved, but I did still enjoy my stay here.

Free baths and nice stay

The ryokan is not exactly in the middle of Kusatsu-onsen, but a bit on the periphery. Since they don't provide a pick up service, you have to take a taxi or walk from the bus station (around 10mins, slightly downhill). The same deal if you want to go to the town center, you'd have to walk about 10-15mins (a little downhill to flat terrain).Plus:- the rate is one of the most reasonable in the area- private onsen- decent size room- strong, free wifi- delicious and reasonably priced breakfast and dinner- massage chair. FREE!Minus:- the location is a bit far from the town center area, a bit inconvenient to get in and out. Tough if you are carrying a big or heavy luggage. But the proprietor did provide me a lift to the bus station when I left- most of the rooms are on the 2nd floor. You have to carry your own luggage upstairs, which did not happen to me at other ryokan- meals are served in the dining room, instead of the usual, in the privacy of your own roomAll in all, it's not bad. The service could have been more attentive.

Great private onsen!

The room was very simple and small, but with a nice traditional feel to it. The place feels quite old but that is not necessarily a bad thing.The highlight of the place was its nice collection of outdoor and indoor onsens ,and good location: close to the center yet far enough for it to be cheap and quiet.

Cheap and nice yet somewhat outdated ryokan

We really enjoyed our stay here. Looking on Google maps we could see it was in a bit of a weird residential area, but it had so many great reviews that we had to see what all the fuss was about. It was a bit of a struggle to get our low car into the driveway, but that was really our only issue. The staff were wonderfully friendly and the food was amazing! The owner spoke a small amount of English and everything had been set out (signs and menus etc) with English translations which was really helpful. The private onsen pools were also fantastic - my husband and I really wanted to have the traditional onsen experience but without the whole 'getting nude with random people' part, so the private pools were perfect. We stayed in summer during the week and it was so nice and quiet, and it was only a short walk to the Yubatake hot water field which was so cool! Overall we had a great experience and would definitely stay here again.
