Family-owned and run pension-style B&B on the Noto Peninsula, Japan. Wonderfully eclectic, all amenities: parking, air conditioning, common area, private onsen/bath, wifi, dinner and breakfast included. Up to 4-person rooms and two detached cottages available. 

We traveled to the Pension Cruise for a break from Ryokan stays during our trip to Japan, and we were blown away by our stay at this pension. The place itself is a beautiful house with charm to spare, decorated with antiques and knick-knacks from all over the world (though with a heavy French leaning, as the family loves France). The rooms are comfortable, and the amenities are great (probably one of best bathrooms we've seen in Japan). The food was fantastic, a really nice mix of Japanese staples with Western influence and twists (or maybe the opposite, depending on what the dish is).

But really, the family who lives here and runs the pension is the best part. They were extremely helpful from the minute of our arrival, and as the previous reviewer said, it feels as you are part of their family. We met everyone, played instruments and sang songs together, and had a bunch of lovely interactions with everyone in the family. 

We didn't have a lot of time to look at the surroundings, but we are sad that we couldn't stay another day (or three) and hang out at this wonderful place. Do go here if you are in the area, either just for food, or for an overnight stay.

Sometimes an experience is so superb that capturing it in a review seems impossible.  Our time at the Cruise Cafe and Pension is one of those.  But we will do our best.  The proprietors of that establishment deserve nothing less.  They were always smiling and treated us as if we were part of the family.  If you are looking for a more private and relaxed experience of Ishikawa Prefecture and the Noto Peninsula in Japan we highly recommend going in the off-season when the main activities are relaxing and touring the peninsula.  We went in mid-autumn and it was an amazing time to admire nature, the change of seasons, the dramatic coastline and the baroque Japanese rock formations that are breath-taking at any time of the year.

 We only stopped for a sandwich at lunch but were so charmed by the unspoiled sweetness that we stayed for dinner, the night and breakfast.  The rooms are adorable.  We enjoyed a very nice private bathroom and a Jacuzzi.  The pensione is an oasis of specialness, beauty and fun.  Every nook and cranny housed something that drew our eyes and piqued our interest.  Every drawer and object told a fascinating story.  The collection of antique toys enchanted us. 

Even if you can’t stay at the pensione the café is not to be missed.  We found every meal we ate there delightful and unusual for the area.  It was not your typical ryoken where you are fed grilled fish at every meal.  And the service was perfect.  They did everything they could to please us.  They showered us with concern and took great care to inquire as to any food allergies or sensitivities that we might have.  The food was a phenomenal Asian/Western fusion – homemade gourmet.  Dinner included a fabulous caprese and since it was apple season there was delicious apple crisp a la mode for dessert.  For breakfast there were eggs as well as a basket with at least four kinds of bread and rolls which they baked especially for us since we were the only guests.

 We cannot begin to express how wonderful these people are.  If you can't spend the night there at the very least stop for a sandwich and a nice glass of iced tea.  As we left they brought out a guitar and sang to us.  It was as if we met the Japanese family we never knew we had.

This place is difficult to describe. Shabby chic, eclectic, homely, more European than Japanese.  Its owner is obviously a passionate antique collecter, and if there is a free spot somewhere then it must be filled.  Our room, I have to be honest, was a bit of a disappointment, it was very small with barely any room for a suitcase.  The fact that the bathroom was on a different floor didnt help.  Had I not seen what the other rooms were like I might not have given it such a high rating as they were fabulous.  We did book at a busy time, so we must have had the last room available. However that said the bed was comfortable, and there was a real window you could open. We stayed two nights so by then had gotten used to the eccentricity of the place and it did grow on us.  The couple running it were charming, the food lovingly presented with no choice (which we preferred as I can never decide what to eat) and fun guests. There is easy parking right in front of the house.  Would I stay here again, definitely, but in a different room.
