B&B Giucalem - La Casa Negli Orti

It’s worth staying here for the dinner, especially for vegetarians. Huge selection of local vegetables cooked lovingly and beautifully. Some hot, some cold. I didn’t know that peppers could be so succulent. The chef obviously takes particular pride in them and presented them with a big smile. The aubergine dish was also superb. And the cheeses! Oh my goodness. My favourite was the mozzarella which oozed deliciousness from its firm outer section once cut into. My husband preferred the hard cheese, and there were also 2 soft ones, both different from each other. We were VERY full after all of that, so we declined the next course of pasta that was offered. Dinner included wine and water and came to 20 Euros each. Excellent value for money given the quantity of food, let alone the quality. It was one of the best meals I’ve ever had, and one of my highlights of our holiday. Note, if you come here, you will be presented with a wide range of typical Sicilian dishes. There won't be a menu, as such. Another table had a selection of meat dishes. We had 2 rooms, and the more accessible one had just a couple of steps to get in the room. Note the restaurant is down a few stairs outside, along the side of the building, but there may have been a different way. The room had nice bright lighting and had a cheerful feel to it. It had a lovely patio with a table to enjoy the sunshine. Do ask for this room if you have mobility issues, as it had a much easier shower to get into. Our room was down some steps but was more spacious with a double bed and a single. There was a freestanding cupboard with a curtain in which to hang items, stocked with plenty of hangers, which we appreciated. It all looked exactly as on the pictures. Wifi was good, and we were able to plug in phones beside the bed. Breakfast was generous, with a selection of local jams to go with bread, croissants and cake, which was moist and tasty. My mother-in-law said the ham was very good. Strawberries must be in season in late March here. They were wonderful and abundant. This place is convenient for Villa Romana del Casale whilst avoiding going into the traffic of Piazza Armerina. The location is also a relaxing place to stop over if heading to Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples.
