I recently visited the Cinque Terre region of Liguria, Italy. Even in mid-September, it can be very hard to find anywhere to stay in the main resort villages. For instance, the tourist office in Levanto had nowhere for the three nights I wanted. Instead, I went to nearby La Spezia, which is easy enough, as there are trains every 30 minutes for 5 euros. Opposite the railway station, I found the Hotel Aurora which, at 47 euros per night, is a bargain for the area. It's a one-star, so don't expect luxury. However, it is perfectly clean and tidy and the welcome I received was the friendliest I had in two weeks in Italy. The manager's daughter speaks excellent English and is extremely helpful and a mine of information about the local area. There is no breakfast on the premises, but the Bistrot Mercedes next-door is another very welcoming place and does a good selection of food and drink at very reasonable prices. Using this as a base, I was able to do all the major walks in the Cinque Terre and visit city attractions like the Museo Amedeo Lia.
