We had zero idea about what to expect from Jilling Terraces—it was a place we stumbled across on an online article and decided to visit. Suffice to say we weren’t disappointed! 

As I write this review, I’m on day 2 of our 3 night 4 days visit to this beautiful stay nestled atop a hill. You can’t drive here. One can either trek for about an hour or so or ride on a horseback, which is what I had done (my husband walked). 

The place is stunning, serene, calm, green, and beautifully done up. It’s comfortable, almost luxurious when you think of the location, and at the same time sustainable. There are a number of room types—double, single, even a duplex and the option of an entire cottage that one can hire.

The staff is lovely, very warm, courteous, and eager to regale their guests with stories about the region and the local food and the nearby villages. They can whip up delicious, healthy meals made from local ingredients. Ask them for the many snacks they can give you with your evening chai or coffee and they won’t disappoint. 

There are nearby treks to a temple, village, and others, all of which are beautiful and arranged for by the staff. 

It’s the perfect place for families, couples, corporate retreats, and even solo travelers. 

My husband and I have lazed around on the property, plucked and eaten local berries, and enjoyed the sunsets and the constant chirping of the birds. We’re definitely going to come back here!

The perfect quiet that city folks need

Had an amazing stay at Nanda stone cottage at Jilling, Kumaon. Very esthitically done up cottage and I compliment Ashish for creating this heavenly place. Our pet dog Joy a seven year old Beagle too was with us and as pet parents it was an ultimate vacation staying in the woods and exploring the jungle tracks. The care takers Daya and Hem made our stay memorable and served us delicious food and lovely pakoras. Looking forward to being there once again.

It is a hidden gem ! One of the most beautiful places I have stayed at!
The property is reachable by 2km trek- covered roughly in 1-1.5 hour- the views while the trek were amazing- there’s also prebooking facility for pony or palki for people who can’t trek & for luggage. 
The cottages are of various types - for couples and for families. 
The food served is excellent- just like homefood. The food is vegetarian unless specified beforehand. 
The view of top cottage is amazing- you also get access to dining and living area.
While living there- there are some nearby treks to do - the temple and the ridge is some of things to watch.
The service was amazing and room was super clean. No noise of traffic or anyone- just nature
I loved my stay here !
For winter travellers- they have bed heaters, high quality room heaters too, so don’t worry. 
The view is breathtaking!

Hidden gem! Must visit

If hills are your first love and cleanliness your second, then you might want to be prepared to let loose a bit when it comes to this property. Reaching Jilling is an arduous trek of a little more than an hour and does test your physical fitness quite a bit. We were greeted by a guy from the property who came bearing bottles of lemonade and a big, cheerful smile on our journey up. Taking such a strenuous trek does get your hopes a little high, but keeping them in check would be my only suggestion. The place is more of a homestay kind of an arrangement and is beautiful in its own ways.
On calling up the concerned person for booking, I asked about the best room I could book since it was my birthday. But the lady told me all their rooms were equally good. Not too happy with a vague response; I still opted for Ringol since it looked nice in the photos. A word of advise, Ringol comes with a loft where the sleeping area is and does look like a dream house in the hills, but it is pretty dark and gloomy. The photos displayed on the website are highly misleading and far from the truth. Utish and Buransh booked by our friends were much, much better. Booking those 2 rooms will also give you access to the main front porch, that has a good area to chill.
The food arrangement is pretty basic, and you will get all home-cooked meals which are pretty nice too. However, if you're hooked on a particular coffee or any food item or dessert for that matter, carry it along. They also have horses treading up and down the hills a few times a day, so you can call for your supplies from Bhimtal if you have drivers staying in the village below. Chicken is considered to be a bit of a luxury item there, and even upon mentioning it time and again, we were served as per the staff's convenience. Momos that the cook makes are quite nice and a must-try.
Rooms were not cleaned daily. The staff is quite nice and friendly but needs to be more responsible for maintaining the rooms' cleanliness, especially when the property is charging a pretty decent amount.
Overall a fairly decent experience, can be tried once.

Fairly Good

We were looking for properties that were away from the crowds and felt safer during these times. Jilling seemed to be a good choice for this. It’s takes a trek of 45-60 minutes by foot to get to the property. 

Pros 
- beautiful property amidst nature 
- simple but spacious rooms. We stayed at the Oak cottage that is set away from the main building. Perfect if you want privacy.
- common dining and bonfires which is great to meet people . Especially as post evening there’s not much to do but enjoy the serenity.
- good treks and they set up a picnic at a nice spot
- helpful staff 
 Cons
- wish the treks had guides who had interesting stories to tell about nature and general living in these areas 
- BBQ in the forest was just a set up on the side with a couple of pieces of meat. Would not recommend to add it to the package. 
- wish we got to eat more local /interesting food as all meals were at the property . 
- more heating equipment would be great - the oil heater was not sufficient.

Perfect Getaway during Covid

The property is extremely beautiful and peaceful with great views and exciting treks but what made it magical was the manager, Avijit, the humble staff and the warm soothing calm sun. Avijit’s impeccable knowledge about the wildlife, his friendly homely attitude towards the guests made us feel home and completed our trip in it’s true sense. It was great at jilling terraces, the food was yummy, the treks were great, the hospitality was amazing, din’t feel like coming back, Thankyou Avijit!!

Beware...these guys are cheats...jilling terrace sucks...chutia baba rakhna hai...khud he booking cancel karke double refund mang rahe hai..bhosfiwale ...koi mat Jana bhaio..chutia log hai..time waste Paisa waste

Booking: we made a booking through Agoda, and a couple of days later when I called the property to check on something, I was told that we didn't have a booking because they had nothing to do with Agoda, and it was MY problem to deal with, not theirs. Later the same day, I got a reply from the property, THROUGH  Agoda, telling me they did have rooms available. So, they were clearly aware of their listing as they had access to it, but refused to honour it at their convenience. Turned out later, I wasn't the only one to experience this frustrating and rude behaviour - there are a few others at least. (Btw, I still landed up going as they said no/ yes at the last minute, and I couldn't have made alternate plans then, especially with all the restrictions because of Covid.)

Access: takes about 1:15 hours of steady walking up in the rainy August weather, and was daunting with a 1-yr old child, whose presence we had mentioned, and were not warned against. It was a very challenging experience. Downhill was equally precarious.

Property: unremarkable. I've been staying at Jilling Estate and Jilling Sanctuary on the same mountain for over a decade, and avoided this property because of the pretentiousness they put out, and my fears were not unfounded. There is a building with 4 rooms, and two small independent cottages, and pretty much nothing else. The porch has a nice view of the mountain ranges, but one you can see at nearly every turn in the Kumaon, so nothing to write home about. 

Rooms: were DARK, in shambles, full of seepages and dampness and mold, and looked NOTHING like the pictures of the site, which is distasteful misrepresentation. When I raised this, I was told this was the rainy season and hence not unnatural. Which then begs the question: WHY would you let out dilapidated rooms knowingly?

F&B: hits and misses. But, but, but, here's the clincher: when we asked for eggs at breakfast, we were told that WE WOULD BE CHARGED RS.120/ FOR 2 EGGS,  despite the fact that the rooms rates were all inclusive. I've stayed in hundreds of hotels, B&Bs, and homestays in my lifetime, and NEVER, EVER been asked to pay for eggs for a breakfast that was included in the room rent. Truly novel. And oh, if you wanted chicken, they offered t procure it for Rs.1,800/- per kg and cook it for us. Daylight robbery.  

Overall, I CANNOT emphasize enough how much Terraces should be avoided, what with the host's stuck-up attitude and rudeness, the worn out rooms, the cheapskate behaviour, and the mediocre F&B. If you really want to go to Jilling mountain (which I would strongly recommend visiting), do yourself a favour and hit up Estate or Sanctuary. 

PS Realized later that they were also flouting the law by not maintaining the 24-hour gap between consecutive guests for any given room. Irresponsible and dangerous.

Disappointed all round

Me my 2 year old child were offered to stay at this property which was mentioned of 1/2 hour trek to reach the property by Harjot. However upon reaching so at the land mark Bhanu tent House,we met one person on behalf of the property who said it's a 2km trek uphill to reach, however having to hold 2 yr old baby in my arms for that duration not something normal as we being city dwellers and not used to and so when we insisted for ponies to take us we are offered only one who was available only to take our bags but not us we still gathered the courage in doing and after a one hour trek on steep uphill with no concrete path but just slates and stones to step on a NARROW path with fatigue and a crying scared baby in arms it is something that is un believe able to hear that after 1 hr of trekking we have barely covered uphill half path (I feel it is over 3km plus trek)! I don't recommend this property to any body as I was also informed by the staff person there is no doctor on the property. May god bless guest's who might fall ill in such isolated location just for sake of watching mountains with better views!

Property Manager Harjot misguided us!

Jilling terraces is a unique getaway in the mountains of the wonderfull Himalaya. The family who keeps it running is so sweet and caring . They trully get pleasure of taking care of you. The food they make is wonderfull with fresh ingredients everyday . 
Don’t worry about getting hungry. They will offer you thee , coffee or a snack just when you start thinking about it . The mountains can get a little cold when the sun goes down, but don’t worry. They will be happy to light the fire in the terrace so you can enjoy the outside in romantic atmospheres . They are also happy to tell you all about the place and fauna and flora.

The interior of the place and the rooms are very cosy and fit the scene perfectly . The rooms are also very clean. With a sweet horse Singhu who grazes around to make it all perfect .
The views from the rooms and the garden are insanely beautiful. 

You can do hikes with a guide who is very sweet, he doesn’t speak much English but enough to tell you all about what is growing in the mountains and is very good at spotting wild animals .
Doing the trails by yourself is not advised as there are no marks at all in the mountains. There are also many domestic dogs who guard there house, but they know the guy who takes you out well so don’t worry at all.

Our stay at Jilling was fantastic and a perfect hideout with view in the Himalaya. We can’t wait to go back and stay for a longer period as we had only 3 nights .
Just to see the amazing view , hear and see all the wild animals . Meeting the mountain locals and drink chai thee with them. 

It was all just an amazing and wonderful experience and we feel so gratefulll to have been there and to have spent our time with these lovely people in a unique wonderfull mountain hideaway.
