Kandath Tharavad

Spent three nights here as our first stop in Kerala.  The owner is a great conversationalist who graduated from U of California  Berkeley in 1971   We ate with him on the estate as if we were family.  He escorted us on tours of the area and even found a festival on a nearby town that we could attend.  Food great, if you are like us and enjoy southern Indian cooking   Area is a bit too isolated to navigate all this on one's own

A great and serene place to stay.  The house where we stayed is over 100 years old.  Very well maintained.  The owner is a great host.  They serve authentic kerala food and was simply fantastic.  A great location.

An authentic Palakkad experience 
We wanted to see Palakkad, and the farmhouse was suggested for us. Curious to experience a really old house that is still in use, we took the chance. The host is a charming grandfather in his 70s, fluent in English and a few other Indian languages. There were 3 other staff and 4 lovable dogs (if you are afraid of dogs, like I am, not to worry as the host and the staff keep them under control) with the host. The old structure of the house has been maintained well, with quite a number of old furniture still in use. Meals were cooked to our dietary preferences. The host kept us company, sharing his own experiences, taking us on a tour of the pond and the farm. We also drove with him to Palakkad town to walk through a traditional Brahmin village, where the housing structure is quite unique. A lazy stroll by the paddy fields with a staff was a nice prelude to dinner. Don’t rush and take your time to enjoy the calm. A great experience to unwind and just chill.

My wife and I stayed here in December 2017. Our stay left vivid memories. Among them, our host conducted us to a local festival in honor of a goddess, something we would not have ventured to do on our own. I stayed for over an hour trying to figure out the rhythmic patterns in the drums. Breakfast in a nearby tea stall was another short but memorable expedition. The food was excellent. The owner studied in the US and his English is as good as mine.

We took walks around the area, and were greeted with smiles and amazement. Kerala is an absolutely marvelous region of the world. The homestay is a big part of why I am so grateful for having had the opportunity to go to India.

After a long drive we arrived at this haven of peace. Our room we full of charm. The history of the house splendid. Our host was very generous with his time. He guided us to two temple festival s and even a breakfast Sree Saraswathy Tea Stall. Quite an experience. The birdlife on the property and surrounding roads was full of interest.

Our delightful host welcomed us into his home and looked after us for our 2 nights.  He even took us out for breakfast for a local speciality!  The house is very old and beautiful with fabulous wooden doors. It is open around sky lights with relaxing corners to sit in. We ate delicious meals in the garden, and our host showed us where to relax by his pond where we watched many birds including 3 varieties of kingfishers.

I came to Kandath Tharavad  by happy accident, having been on a five-star trip with a few home stays as well. I tried the rest and then I found the best! I didn't want to go back to Coimbatore which I hadn't enjoyed, so I asked my travel agents Audley for a different place on my planned route. By incredible luck Kandath Tharavad was free. It is a uniquely beautiful 300-year-old house, still in the possession of  its original family owners who know the area in detail. Cool marble floors, antique carvings in situ over the doors and pillared passages, open courtyards. Set in a green oasis with a pavilion built over an expanse of water. The table d'hote dinner and breakfast were lovely (I got the impression most of the other visitors are usually French). Talking to the owner was absolutely fascinating, and he was kind enough to take me to a local festival before I left on my travels again. This too was one of the high spots of my trip. I must not forget the three dogs who made my visit such a joy. Incidentally my big 'de luxe suite' had perfect air-conditioning, though most of the public areas rely on the natural air cooling techniques of the original builders.

Deep in rural Kerala is this beautiful traditional ancestral home, now converted into a homestay. The owner gave us a warm welcome and showed us to our comfortable old-style room with a large en-suite. Within the grounds is a lovely fishpond with its own relaxation deck, while outside, at the owner's suggestion, we were able to take a lovely early morning walk through the paddy fields. Lunch and dinner were copious and delicious; breakfast was more basic. This homestay is perfect for anyone wanting to experience life in rural India. 

We've spent one night here in a deluxe suite which included a spacious bedroom, a sitting room (or second bedroom), a veranda and a good sized bathroom. Beautiful rustic furniture. The wifi worked only in the main hall of the house, otherwise everything was perfect. We had a bit of wildlife in the sitting room and the bathroom - small lizards and a banana frog - but this is part of the experience and they were more scared of us than we of them. Our host took us to a temple festival in the evening, which was an amazing experience. Dinner was served on the big veranda of the house and our host joined us. It was of freshly prepared local dishes, everything was very tasty. They serve beer as well, for that they had to get a special licence. Breakfast was good too.

Checked into the homestay and after a super lunch we went down to the lake on the property to relax in the shade. We spent some time there and waited and saw the coveted Asian Paradise Flycatcher swooping in for water, what a treat .
The food served here was amazing , all locally sourced using local recipes . Bhags told us some of the cooking is outsourced to local women in the village as part of a responsible tourism scheme and that local women work at the homestay too. On the second morning Bhags took us to a tea shop about 30 minutes  drive away . There we had a local breakfast speciality, Ramaserry idli which was truly wonderful . We went on to visit a Brahmin village and Tipu Sultan Fort. In the afternoon we went to a local basket weavers home and watched them weave a basket for us . All of these activities were included at no extra cost to us which we greatly appreciated . We had a most comfortable stay in this sympathetically restored old farmhouse with a charming host . A great experience .

A glimpse of bygone days in rural Kerala 

Lovely heritage property

This place is a beautiful old house and the owner is fifth generation living there. The rooms were large and mainly comfortable. We did have a bit of wildlife (frogs and lizards) in our bathroom but this just added to the charm. Though seeing the frog jump from the toilet pan made us jump too. It was very hot in Palakkad and humid too, the air con in the room not quite effective enough to counteract this.

The owner took us to see a temple festival on our first evening. It was quite a sight to behold  and the music and enthusiasm of the locals was catching.

The food served here is all local food, freshly prepared and the best food we had in our 2 week trip. In fact probably the best we have had anywhere in our 20 trips to India!  We tasted some dishes we have never even heard of before and there was not an overload of rice! It was wonderful. Beer is served here too. 

We were taking on a tour of the town and a visit to Tipu Sultans fort. This was very interesting and became even more relevant when we later visited Mysore and learned more about Tipu.
