We have stayed at Roots, Shoots & Beds in May 2023 (5 people, 2 rooms, ground floor). Excellent experience, especially from the fact that the owners themselves take care of the property. I look forward to visit again in the future.
Pros:
- The owners of this property are extremely courteous. That is the biggest plus. A few instances worth mentioning:
1. We arrived late & instead of chapatis rice was available for dinner. The owner took the pain to prepare chapatis late at night.
2. I was looking for curd, which is unavailable at the kitchen, so the owner’s wife brought us curd form her adjoining home kitchen. How many people would do this in 2023?
3. One of us wanted a rose cutting & instead the owner gifted us English rose (rooted), free of cost from his garden
- Calm & quite location
- Few rooms, so not overcrowded
- Beautiful, natural landscape garden, full of exotic plants such as Geranium & wild orchids 
- Good scenic beauty. At night, you can see the night lights of Kalimpong
- Food is good. The cook is well behaved & efficient

Cons: (not too many):
- Low manpower, so you will not get the service as good as standard hotels
- The rooms can be better (cleaner, with cozy beds & amenities such as tea/coffee bags etc.)
- The entrance is narrow. It is difficult to locate the property. A better gate/prominent glow sign is recommended

Excellent stay!

We have stayed here one night ( 18th to 19th March ) with our friend and his wife. One first floor and one ground floor room.
Location :: It is in between the main Kalimpong bazar and Dello park. Opposite to Shakya Monastery, 11th Mile , Rishi road. It is little bit far from the main bazar , but vehicles are easily available from the main bazar and from the property .
Facilities provided :: 1) parking for vehicle.2) Rooms and beds are spacious enought for two persons. 3) Neat and clean rooms. From Balcony , every where you see varities of flowers . 4) Places are there to get Yoga and meditation . 5) Wi fi is available in the premises.6) Night view of Kalimpong lightings from the property is mind blowing.
Kitchen facilities :: 1) Well decorated outdoor dining places are there. 2) Barbique facilities are provided on demand as they have very good arrangements.
Food :: Breakfast is complementary and very good selection and tasty too.Snacks , Lunch and dinner are provided with extra cost. Foods are too tasty to express ( But should be informed earlier to the kitchen staffs ).
About the owner and Staffs :: 
The owner and his wife are staying there and ready to solve every problems with care . The owner, Mr Nawyaj Gurung ( 9593970459 ) and his wife , Mrs. Prateema Gurung ( 7602043544 ) are very educated , polite and too gentle. The lady staff Kavita and the main cook Yugal are well behaved . The food is very very tasty. 
About the Toilet :: ,1) Toileteries are provided.2) Geyser is there to get instant hot water.3) Clean and spacious toilet.

A request :: As this is a homestay , please do not expect hotel like facilities. It's a relaxing and memorable experience to stay there.

Root Shoot and Beds - A memorable stay

A damp room was provided to us, which was not cleaned 
properly. The bed was hard, the bedsheets were dirty. On requesting they changed the room. The next room provided to us was having water issues in bathroom. We were waiting for 1 hour after checking, while all these things were happening. We couldn't refreshen up and on complaining about this, she told us we can leave if we want. She also said these things are not in her hand. I am not sure, what that means, but when you are opening a homestay, it is your responsibility to keep the things running. Her tone, her way of talking was very rude, we were forced to pack our luggage and left the place. When we talked about refund with makeup trip, she refused to pay back the amount. In one word, don't ever plan your stay here. You won't like it.

Very bad experience

We visited the homestay on 6th Dec, 2021. And I am writing this review on the same day from a different hotel because we ran away from that horrible homestay.

As soon as we reached, the room that was provided was very low in standard and cleanliness was awful. At first we were terrified for a few minutes but then we requested for a different room which they provided without any issue. But upon unpacking and tidying up, the bathroom plumbing began having issues and water was barely pouring out of the taps.

We again called out the host and she along with 2 others tried to fix but couldn't. Upon complaining about the services, she started behaving rudely and even asked us to leave if we were not satisfied. She suggested ridiculously that we freshen up in one room and stay in another.

We couldn't bear the unprofessional and impolite behavior anymore and we left. We had to wait for random taxis in the road with all our backpacks for half and hour before getting onto one and coming onto this safe heaven from where I am writing this review.

There are many awesome hotels and homestays in Kalimpong. I have visited here thrice. But this homestay and this host is probably the worst that you can get in the entire North Bengal.

A horrible experience

Amazing vibe. Thanks to both Hamsa Yoga Shala and Roots Shoots and Beda. The food was healthy and very homely. It was an amazing experience to be drenched in an atmosphere of flowers and yoga. Truly divine.

The first time,  i stayed here was in 2016. I had been recommend by Brenda Haseldine of Australia. My kid was hardly 2 yrs old. We had a fabulous stay alongside Nature, Flowers and Orchids. It was the most fabulous trip ever. The hosts cared for myself and my family so much that i did not miss home. 
On 22.05.19 i called up Prateema di. i enquired if two rooms were available. She said YES as it was election time and tourists were scarce. I along with my family and Rajib da's family had driven all the way from Kolkata. We arrived around 2.30 pm in two cars. Adequate car parking  was there for 8 cars inside the premises with full security and safety. We ordered for 50 piece vegetable Momos. This was served to us within a short period of time. Rajib da and Soma di were mighty impressed. We are finicky about toilets. We were astounded to find impeccably clean toilets with a set of toiletories and sweet smell of natural room freshners. The clean toilets bowled us over. The clean bed sheets and clean rooms were simply too good. "This homestay followed European Standards of hygiene and cleanliness." Free superfast WIFI and Full HD Tata sky Led TV is there in every room. Complimentary breakfast is also too good. Nuclear powered and handsome Dinesh is there to cater to each and every of our needs. We stayed amongst Nature. In Nature, there are insects, plants, frogs, cats, dogs, snails, bees, flies, butterflies, moth, orchids, roses, shurbs, herbs, cactus, bamboo shoots. They are all around us but not in rooms. We are GUESTs in their natural world. We have come to experience Nature, first hand. 
Try to enjoy A life without Mobile Phone. A life without cable TV. A life reading books from the library. As if time stood still. No complaints, only gratitude. A big thank you for rejuvinating ourselves. The 5 year old kids, Ankit and Komolini looked mighty happy and stayed away from Youtube in cell phones. They discovered plants, flowers, insects, orchids. Everything is new to the kids (who have lived in concrete jungle of the metropolitan cities). 
The organic food from the farm, non spicy less oil food is perfect for the kids. The water is supplied from a very high end Kent RO system. This is much better than the bottled mineral water. The TDS levels in water is controlled. The modular kitchen looks totally European and super clean. The dinning area is ethnic and well decorated. The property is carefully designed and decorated by a stylish Mother which can be very much evidenced here. She has a keen sense of aesthetic planning and decoration.
Prateema di enquired, whether we will be staying for 4 days ? I answered : "Just one day". This got extended to 3 days and two nights. So was the magnetic effect of the place. She loves plants as her own children. The Motherly touch of a women is required to make a place a home. This is exactly what is available here. So caring, so Motherly, such good behaviour of herself and her staff. Her staff have become like her extended family. 
We need to behave in a proper manner, decorum must be maintained like a home or else Mother will scold. We must not pluck flowers as they also have life. Do not kill or step over frogs and insects. They are very much important for the eco system. Do not break furniture or glassware. Use the toilets in a clean manner. Do open shoes while entering room so that the dirt is not carried inside. Use the waste paper basket so that rooms are spotless clean. We must also speak softly so that the other guests and their family are not disturbed. Please do maintain a decorum in the kitchen while waiting for food. Most of the people forget that this place is a homestay and not a full fledged Hotel. So, we have to follow  certain House rules and regulations ( OGBs living in cottages in DGH will understand perfectly what i mean to say. House Parents guide us ). 
Hot water is readily available in the bathroom. Power backup is also there for uninterrupted power supply. Evenings are so romantic, you can't even imagine. Please do make your minds permeable to accept nature and understand the dynamics. There is a complete library of books to read and also a big billiards table. 
Thanks to Roots Shoots and Beds for rejuvinating us. We had invited some Government officials to the place who were well known to us. They were also astounded to find the beautiful place. 
This place can be booked from Goibibo, Makemytrip, Direct Phone call etc. Price varies from INR 1000 to INR 2500 depending on season, availability and discounts offered. This place is on 11th Mile, near Sakya Monastry. Also pretty close to Dr. Graham's Homes. Since the location is on the main road, it is easy to walk into town.This place is as close to an European Holiday i can get.

Excellent Homestay 

Just popped in for a coffee. Very friendly and helpful staff. The oat milk lattes are delicious. Didn’t try any food on this occasion but it all looked very nice and so will definitely pop back sometime soon.

We booked the Roots, Shoots & Beds from 3rd to 8th May 2019 for ourselves, extended family and friends. It was for our son's wedding to a Kalimpong lady. Nawraj and Pratima Gurung were thoughtful and excellent hosts. Pratima laid on a barbecue dinner for about 50 of our guests at the homestay. The food was to die for. Dinesh, the help at the homestay, was there from morning to evening to attend to our varied needs and always with a smile. Many of us were senior citizens and we felt it was truly home.

Wonderful stay

We had a plan to visit Kalimpong from 13th March,2019 to 15th March,2019, so we booked RSB. The place is easily located. When we reached there, host Nawraj-ji gave us a warm welcome and we are stunned to see their amazing garden with variety of flowers and they have set up a great and serene place. The location is just outside the busy center of Kalimpong and right where the road to Deolo starts, but off the road so you cannot hear the noise. 
The rooms are comfortable, clean and well furnace, and with hot water available 24 hours a day. The stuffs, Dinesh & Bikram is always keen to help us. 
Now comes to food, the complimentary breakfast was everyday adjusted to our liking and every lunch and dinner we had there tasted like homemade food and was well cooked and prepared with care.

Lovely Stay

What a wonderful stay in the mid of the mystic hills of Kalimpong. I have been there twice but will go there more. Lovely stay and it adds to the flavour of your stay when assisted by a wonderful homely environment created by the owners.
