Room was clean, no smell, quite, peaceful and just nice also very cheap price to stay and the toiletries were plentiful & well chosen. The hotel personal was very kind and friendly.The location was one of the best for sightseeing not far from Mahabodhi Temple not very near.

A Peaceful Stay at Bodhgaya

Alok Hotel gives a new meaning to ‘no frills included’ – but in a nice way.

Indeed, the most colourful thing that is there is two crimson sofas that decorate the blunt reception area. The entrance looks like a construction site. And somewhere between the reception desk and the stairs, there is something like an unfinished wall, or sort of gorge, or a portal into another dimension, or sort of exit out of Matrix.

But that’s about it. Everything else is peachy. 

First of all the place is clean and quiet. It is all marble, - but not the annoying shining-polished kind.

Inside, you might find two beds – and even a small TV attached to the wall. I have not found windows in my room but it should not mean that the other rooms don’t have them. There might be a room with a window. Though wait, … I asked for a room with a window: the guy said there were all the same.  

There is balcony though that looks right into a back yard of a respected Indian family.  I am not sure though if they had cows but they most probably did.

The room is definitely good. It can’t be called cosy, but surprisingly, it is nice. If there are two people who can be satisfied sitting on a slightly hard bed reading books, it is ok.

I have never heard any noise in that place: the sound seemed to be dying absorbed by the marble tiles. 
But sometimes it felt a bit abandoned, sort of. - But mind my words, I have never felt any unpleasant smell or saw dust anywhere.

Well, then,

The place itself is a bumpy 3 minutes ride, 500 meters perhaps, away from the noisy shouting, horn-banging main road. It is absolutely quiet at night, and though there are quite a few houses, they are all surrounded by fields. I mean it is healthy. You can sleep until the mullah will shout Allahu-Akbar in the morning–rest assured he is not very loud, and he won’t last too long. Usually, I would wake up earlier and felt extremely peaceful. 

I would say I liked the road that leads to the hotel in the morning: there are children in uniforms, going to school, local men wrapped like babushkas in shawls, - getting the morning chat and chai. Cows are lazily meditating outside the rough looking houses. The nice local unadorned but true life is being lived right in front of your eyes.

One thing: it is pretty dark - after dark, and it might feel a bit spooky, funny, and bumpy getting back late.

The guys at the reception were ok. I would be happy to praise their going out of the way to help me with 
finding out why my internet did not work but that did not materialise. The result was a lot of running around trying to find an Internet cafe, or paying a hundred rupees for the Barista coffee to get wi-fi. 

The guy proudly stated that his mobile does work – probably expecting to be congratulated on that. Look, it should not be taken seriously: I am spoilt rotten by the Thai hospitality. 

On the brighter side: ask the tea in your room, and it will come. It really will.

I think finally it would be great for them to slightly decorate and prettify the reception area: - put an aquarium with a crocodile, or a pen with a cow, chewing hay. Some shelves with Buddhist books or a bunch of novels forgotten by the travelers. Gosh, just a stupid cheapest kettle with coffee bags - charge me twice for them but i will be happy. 

A tiny champagne fountain would not hurt either.

I will never forgive you guys: I had a chat and a bidi with a charming Danish lady, and I did not dare to invite her upstairs. 

Oh, miss, let’s come upstairs and let’s have a cup of water while sitting on those hard beds with very clean sheets, miss?

This hotel is only new so everything still works. The rooms are clean and if a reasonable size. The shower is the best I've had this trip - hot and strong. Unfortunately the bands are hard and the wifi only works in the reception area.
