Ranjana Guest House

Excellent location good sized bedrooms, clean rooms and comfy beds. OK hot water was a bit intermittent and breakfast was fine, but not special but quiet spot and owner pleasant and reasonable value. Rather nice roof terrace for breakfast and escaping the midday sun

I have stayed twice at Ranjana Guest house and always had a great experience. 
It has clean rooms with an open portico on the first floor to sit and view the surroundings. The home overlooks the Virupaksha temple directly and is within 500m, and is wedged between the temple and the Hemakuta hill. 
The service is pretty decent and prompt, though they have a limited menu for breakfast etc. They do have a TV in each room, along with Wi-fi with decent connectivity.

A strong recommend if you are looking for a great value-for-money and close to the center of Hampi.

Great stay right near Virupaksha temple!

 comfortable stay 

I stayed there for 3 nights in one of the basic rooms downstairs. I'm a solo female traveller. The room was clean and the overall stay was OK. The best part is really the boys that help out with transport and tours, Roy and Jilan. Roy rents the bycicles. 
 I needed the room for one more day as I was leaving that evening and wasn't feeling well so I paid for one more night, which I understand. But then the lady, Kala, offered to have the room cleaned and charged me an extra 200INR for that but didn't tell me it would be extra in advance. Water is provided if you ask for it, it's 5 INR more expensive than at the store. You have to ask for hot water for showers when you need it. The place is well situated near everything, but the temple music starts at 5 or 6 am and goes on forever so no peace and quiet in the morning.

We got to Hampi without having booked a place to stay. On getting to Hampi centre (Near Virupaksha Temple), the guides nearby showed us this Guest House. They were quite helpful and didn't demand money for their help. Greeted by multiple gibbons, Ranjana Guest House was quite a good place to stay. The host aunty charged 3 of us Rs. 1200/night for a 3 bedroom. The WiFi was very slow but it did the job we required. We didn't try operating the TV cause that's not what we were there to do. The location is the only reason why you should choose the place as it then becomes a rest stop on your travels. Alternately, you could stay at Nargila (alcohol etc) on the other side of the bank and travel by boat to the bank with the sites, in the morning. Be mindful that you will have to get the boat back before night as the boat service stops quite quick and it's an hour and a half's travel around via road.
At the end of the day, Ranjana served our purpose for an affordable price.

Good Spot to start your exploration

We stumbled upon this place by chance. We had actually booked a hotel in Hospet when we visited Hampi in January at the time of the Hampi Heritage Run. Luckily we decided to go to Hampi to pick up our running bib before checking into the hotel. 

Soon we realized that staying in Hospet is not a great idea if one wants to see the ruins of Hampi at the best times of the day i.e. sunrise and sunset. Also, we would spend a lot of time traveling back and forth from Hospet. We started looking for rooms in the home stays in Hampi. Most were dark and drab and gave a dungeon like feeling. We were actually losing hope when we stumbled upon Ranjana Guest House.  

Ranjana Guest House is in the heart of Hampi, right next to the Virupaksha temple. The rooms are clean and situated on the first floor with AC and attached bathroom. Nothing much fancy about the rooms as this is not a hotel but a homestay. The owners in fact live on the ground floor. The rooms on the first floor are arranged around the open terrace with chairs and tables to lounge around and look at the steady stream of visitors to Virupaksha temple, Hampi Bazar and Matanga Hill. 

The proximity to the ruins meant that we could climb up Matanga Hill to see the sunrise, come back freshen up, go out for lunch to the eateries in Hampi Bazar, come back, take a nap and then again head out sightseeing when the sun relinquishes its blaze again in late afternoon.

Food is also served in the guest house at nominal extra charge. We ate breakfast here (toast, omelette, tea) and it was good.

Parking is not available in the premises of the guest house. However, you can park outside on the side of the street if space is available. 

Accommodation in Hampi is over priced as most hotels are situated in Hospet, the nearest town. Hence, the guest houses and homestays around Hampi Bazar are minting money by renting out sub-standard rooms at steep prices. We saw a couple and decided on Ranjana as it seemed to be the best deal among the all, although they too are overcharging for the quality offered.

The owners are not very friendly but once we negotiated an agreeable price with them and checked in, we didn't have to interact with them much so it was fine.

So, you can choose to stay in Ranjana Guest House if you are looking for clean place to crash close to the ruins. However, if you are expecting hotel standard service and amenities, it's better to stay in Hospet or the resorts outside of Hampi.

A clean homestay next to Virupaksha temple

Eight of us stayed for five days at Ranjana Guest House in February this year. Things started on a sour note, with the owner not honouring  the online price of Rs 1250, and convinced our tour leader to agree for Rs 1600 for a double room, for a sizable 40 room days. Later I argued and had it  reduced to Rs 1400. Even that was too high for 40 room days. To know that you are being taken for a ride made for lasting resentment.

Our entry was also irritating, what with one of his men's insulting behaviour (Luckily, that was the last we saw of him)

The owner played some tricks with us. He quoted Rs 200 per room per day extra, for AC, but claimed full day for AC in the first night arguing that the day starts in the morning. He will switch off the ACs when we step out for lunch and we returned to hot interiors. The wifi passwords he gave initially did not work.

The claim of television in the rooms also need a caveat. The TV sets are perched above 8 feet height and only shows some local channels.

The access to our first floor rooms were through the family's ground floor drawing  room, with the owner and wife eating in front of a noicy TV most times we passed.

There are any number of similarly or lower priced options in the neighborhood, some of them offering in house catering, unlike Ranjana, which only gives rooms.

I hope not to stay there again. Rarely do I wish so about hotels. The inbuilt callousness that expressed itself in multiple ways made Ranjana a bad experience, though there is nothing to complain about the rooms per say.

It's a total rip off. No value for money at all. We were given a soap worth RS 4/- in the name of toiletries. 
When I asked for toilet paper the lady there says that they give only for foreigners. 
I paid 3360/- for 2 days nothing was provided. I wasn't even given a receipt. Since I had booked through Booking.com (a big mistake) she says they take their commission and so no receipt. Forget breakfast not even water was provided. Places like this encourage plastic. If they have a water filter and provide water instead of selling bottled water there will be less use of plastic. 
The room was small and right next to the only window in the room is a toilet and a pump(which makes a racket when switched out) and a water drum. The toilet is used by all. And next to the toilet is an open parking area. There is absolutely no privacy and lots of noise. Hot water is provided only from 7:00AM to 9:30AM and even that is very erratic and flow is very less and added to that the water is warm not hot. They can provide hot/warm water twice a day.That's why it is much too expensive. There are no facilities at all except yes the soap. I feel the place Padma guest house (which is just 2 steps away) is much much better. The room is slightly bigger they provide breakfast and water and all this for just 1000 a day. The view is also much better. It is spacious outside so instead of Ranjana I would highly recommend Padma guest house.

Ranjana Guest House a big NO

I stayed there on October-2019 during Duessra holidays... 
Only thing I experienced in Ranjana guesthouse is that you have to Bargain, bargain and bargain. 
For sightseeing they charged me 1500rs. Also started at 10.30am and finsihed at 3.30 pm.  After came to our room at 3.30pm I enquired about the cost with other families in the same guesthouse, they told that they gave 1000rs only for sightseeing and also timing is 10.am to 6.pm.  When I asked the Owner Vinod gowda about this cheating, he told me due to dussera fare is increased.  Then how come other families went at 1000rs???? He replied they already bargained in advance. 

Also another bad experience in my room is, the TV was not working, when I informed him he told that he will send one of his friend to fix the issue. But even after 5hrs nobody attended.  I keep on called him then he came at 9.00pm and checked and told some recharge issue is there, and told that he can't solve that issue now and told sorry for the inconvenience.    

Also the Wi-Fi will not work inside the rooms. Only it will work on the terrace area.  And after the TV issue he gave me a new. Wi-Fi password which is working in our room. 

So, please note that if you are going to stay in Ranjana Guesthouse, please try to bargain, bargain and bargain well in advance.. 
My rating is 1. Due to this bad experiences.

Cheating...

I hate the service and they treat very badly. Please be careful..
 These guys only think about money nothing else. I don't recommend anyone to stay here. U can find better one. Also too much noise as its very close to bus stand
