I and my 4 family and friends arrived at XL Homestay in the vibrant and happy area of Fort Kochi for a 2 night stay. From the moment we all arrived the lovely host Amal was attentive and trusting, and from the very first moment we all did descend on him, Amal was a perfect gentleman with huge amounts of professionalism.  All the XL staff are all of the same and very helpful polite and gracious.  There wasn’t anything that was not to much trouble every time we moved Amal would make sure all of our plans went smoothly without a hitch which they certainly did. We visited so many exciting places while we travelled around Kerala, you must all travel.

We all felt very at home at the beautiful XL Homestay all 3 rooms we booked were spotless and with a large fantastic veranda on the main room were you can sit and watch the world and all the lovely helpful people go buy there every day business. The rooms have had special attention to detail paid to all of them  with beautiful decor and with exquisite bathrooms, also with soft sweet smelling bedding we very much thought we was staying at a beautiful 5 star hotel it is amazing staying at the  special Homestay and more importantly very inexpensive and great value for money. The special atmosphere at the homestay makes you feel quite relaxed and at home. Along with being with in the vibrant area of Fort Kochi close to the ferry, the harbour and the exciting tourist area packed with culture and interest,  the homestay is in an excellent place with a beer just a stones throw away. Along with just being a stroll away from the interesting fishing nets, the XL Homestay and all there staff is the place to be. We will always always  return to visit the very helpful host Amal and the XL homestay, and Fort Kochi think we have fallen in love with Kerala thank you for a fantastic special trip Julie.

Beautiful Homestay and Host

Excellent location. Beautiful light and airy rooms. We had a lovely veranda where you can sit and watch the world go by. Air con. Amal is a great host, looked after us all above and beyond. This is not a bar, the bar is opposite the homestay and also a great place to visit. Amazing food in the bar and cold beer which is very welcome after a hot day sight seeing! So much to see and do locally. Definitely going to stay again ☺️

One of the few places to sit down and have a cold beer.  It’s not very atmospheric and despite the “no smoking” sign, it seemed that virtually everyone was smoking when we were there (in fact when people got up to stand outside and smoke the staff actively encouraged them to stay inside and smoke), making for an unpleasant environment (at least for us non smokers).  No apparent effort to make the ambience of the place appealing - trading on the fact that it’s one of the few places to get a beer.

Cold beer, but otherwise unpleasant environment

We were surprised to find the property closed. We had a confirmed booking with fully paid charges. They never bothered to inform the closure and left us high and dry. There is no one on the property. Very inhospitable homestay. Please check before you make the booking.

Perfectly situated in Fort Kochi - Judy is the perfect hostess - a radiant woman with a big smile, and a genuine personality - she makes a great breakfast with plenty of local coffee to your desired strength - entitled colonialists are not welcome - if you are an open and spiritual person with your heart in the right place, you will be - and that is the way it should be - all the sites are close by within a minute or two to walk, and the best restaurants too - Judy’s wi-fi is high speed and she has spent a lot on it - no problems with internet here. The rooms are large, airy, and spacious, everything is clean, the beds are large enough to accommodate the Dutch, the correct balance of comfortable yet perfect for the spine...highly recommended.

Dont expect much more than a grimy/basic beer hall- still, good to experience! We didn't eat, but plenty of people were.

Bar not homestay!

BEWARE OF STAYING at this place! This has been by far the WORST staying experience in India + any other country we have travelled so far. We (my husband, 2,5 old daughter and I) had booked and paid for a room + inclusive breakfast in advance. It turned out that the owner told us that breakfast was not included anymore but she also wasn’t ready to refund us the missing breakfasts for the 4 days we stayed there. We had such a hassle to find places in the morning where to eat with a hungry toddler. Bed was the most uncomfortable. She provided wrong information about train options and tourist spots. A horrible experience with the owner just focused on own profit-making. Please never stay here + especially not as a family! We never saw the money again that she owes us!!!

WORST STAY in India!! Be careful!!!

We had walked into the restaurant by chance and was pleasantly surprised by the mildly spiced fish curry. We went back again to have fish molee and alleppy prawn curry with raw mango pieces. We haven't yet decided which was better, the fish curry rice or the crispy fried squid rings.

Best location in Cochi

Judy is a great host at this little place. She has five rooms and makes a nice breakfast on her roof terrace every morning. The location is amazing to walk around to the Chinese Fishing Nets, the Vasquo da Gama Plaza and other places in Fort Kochi.

The hotel is simple, the rooms functional and clean, but you really need a mosquito net there. The mosquitoes were eating me alive and I chose to move to another hotel after two nights. The price is great though, so if you do travel with the net, by all means stay there!
