Bare bones Hostel, which is overpriced for its standard because it has a virtual monopoly on being the only ‘cheap’ accommodation in the area. Unless you are camping at Hild which is cheaper. I booked direct with bedding as an extra which was just over £49 for one night. Had to go to the separate Hild reception building to book in & pay on arrival where you get your key to the room & you get given your bed number. I wasn’t keen on the bed configuration here, no dividers, so if you happen to be tall you may end up brushing feet with the person sleeping at the other end. Personally, I wasn’t keen on the central ladders to the bunks either, as you could easily be disturbed or disturb somebody else who is sleeping. The kitchen is basic but functional. The showers look as if they have been relatively recently updated. But you have 13 rooms of 4 bunks = 52 people and only four showers. Good job I was up at 5am, otherwise there may have been a queue for them. There was a slight smell of sulphur using the hot water, not a problem, it wasn’t overpowering. Eating area is pretty cool to be fair with its view of the lava field. Check in is between 5-8pm only.

Hlid Hostel

Rooms are very tiny and hard to even open large bags. Kitchen area was fine but there were just too many people using it at the same time. Pricing is higher compared to what they provide.

Simple accommodation in a nice surrounding.

Bed very creaky and noisy and seems outdated.

Loved to sleep at the end of a 300 years old lava bed, my bed was comfy (I rented duvet set) and staff was friendly and very helpful. Not much privacy in the bathroom but for few nights is fine. Great cheap option for exploring the wonderful surroundings

Toilets are separate from showers so when you have to pee in the morning you aren't waiting for people to finish as shower. I wasn't aware of any waits for either toilets or showers.

Cons
Missing kitchen stuff  - ie they don't have can openers, spatulas or hot pads to grab hot pots or hand towels to dry dishes.
The room is cramped/tight
Have to pay for bedding, it isnt included
Laundry is pricy 1500 for wash another 1500 to dry.

Not sure I'd go back even if it was the best deal... depends on how much extra the next place to stay was.

Very basic and small room totally overpriced for what it is.
The ration guests/bathrooms is very poor.
The kitchen is well equipped but it is small as well as the dining room
Despite the amount of people, the place is clean

Check in was smooth and the room and bed were comfortable. Cost to rent linens is much higher than listed on Hotels.com. It was approximately $18 for the linens.

Great stay, easy access to kitchenware and lots of room for guests.

After sleeping in a tent around north iceland for 2 nights with rainy weather, my husband and I needed a bed to sleep for a change. We had previously booked in this place 2 years ago and already knew what to expect: hostel with shared bath, toilet & kitchen, 2 bunk beds per room. We were pretty happy with how the kitchen was fully supplied with cooking & dining utilities. Place can get a little loud at full occupancy because the walls & floors are thin. But for the most part, it was peaceful. Best part of the building was the dining area. Made of big glass windows where you see the sunset and nature. Excellent price as well for a hostel in Iceland. It was the best budget accommodation we had during our trip. 

A special mention to the receptionist from Poland, Malvena. Even with the long queue in front of her, she serviced every customer with professionalism. She gave us a good deal with the room even as walk in customers.
