Hotel Hilda is more like a hostel.  We were e-mailed a door code for the front door and our room, no personal touch at all and no reception for help or advice.  The only employee we saw was the rather surly and unfriendly young man who put out breakfast.  He had long hair that was not tied back, so much for hygiene! The room was tiny, basic, depressing, not at all homely and welcoming, not particularly clean and was tired and needed updating.  It is actually the worst room I have ever had the misfortune of staying in. There was only a meagre bit of net curtain at the window, even though our room was on street level and we had street light shining in. This meant there is no privacy when the light is on. There needs to be curtains or blinds at the window.  The bathroom was tiny and no working fan, when you used the shower it flooded the floor so we had to use towels to try and stop this happening. The towels we hung up every day were changed even though the sign says they wouldn’t be.  I try to be as eco-friendly as I can.  We couldn’t access the room until 3, even though our room was ready, so we just had to sit and wait, not great after a long journey.  There was a room to put luggage but this wasn’t secure. I am vegan and had messaged the hotel in advance to ask if they could cater for me, they said yes - what a joke!! There was some plant milk, but not enough for us both, some Almond milk was eventually available a couple of days later after we complained and so was ‘gluten free cheese’ we were told, well I am vegan and not gluten free!! They really had no idea! I had to buy my own plant based milk and spread. Breakfast was meagre, the coffee ridiculously strong and not available during the day.  Only a 2 slice toaster so everyone had to wait to use it. If there were more than 6 people in the dining room then it was full! The stairs are steep and wouldn’t be any good for anyone with mobility issues.  The lift is for baggage only. The only positives I can say about this awful place is the beds were comfy, linen and towels clean and ‘hotel’ was centrally placed and easy to walk into town and bus stop 1 where most of our tours started from.  Please do yourself a favour and don’t book this place as in our opinion it is truly appalling. We loved Iceland but dreaded coming back to our depressing room and tried to stay out as much as possible.

Dreadful ‘hotel’ tired, dated and depressing

Do not try to turn up before 1500 - you will be turned away.
We paid for breakfast - it is meant to be available by 0700 - we had events each day and had to be out early (sometimes breakfast was not even ready by 0720) so we had to miss out. 
The breakfast guy was extremely rude and unhelpful. Do not ask him for example some milk for coffee if he is doing something as it's just a no - you will get it when he is ready. 
Tea and coffee was expected to be available 24/7 - not so - it is made at 0709 and put in thermus flasks and that's it for the day (by midday it is luke warm and by evening.....) some days there was a kettle to make hot water but some days it was not and half the days there was no milk. 
The WiFi worked on and off. 
In our toilet there was a large window opposite with no blinds or curtains so anybody could see you on the toilet, in the bath or having a shower. 
There were broken electrical plugs exposed, the TV did not work properly and although it says you can report problems at reception (there is no reception and nobody to report to).
Two of the three radiators were not working, getting to our floor involved 3 flights of very steep stairs, the chair in our room was broken, balcony was very slippery and dangerous and overall disappointing. 

Not as described 

After agreeing to go a a pre-booked trip and reading some of the negative reviews for this place, i did have some concerns. However, the location is as good as it gets in Reykjavik. The rooms were spotlessly clean and had all the facilities we needed for our mini-break. The breakfast room was simple and clean too with a suitable selection of breakfast foods being made available including the 'make you own waffles' option which would be great for kids. My only disappointment with this place was that some of the other guests were quite nosiey on returning to the hotel later in the evening. They took advantage of the tea/coffee being made available in the breakfast bar but didn't really consider that other guests were trying to sleep in adjacent rooms. Maybe the hotel could add some signage to highlight this and request that noise levels be kept down.

Decent accomodation in a good location.

We stayed at Hotel Hilda from 13th-17th Jan in room 13. The Bus Stop to use is Bus Stop 1 City Hall which is a 5 min walk to the Hotel. The Hotel is in easy walking distance to the Harbour and Restaurants.

 On arrival we had a entrance code to the Hotel which was sent 2days before arrival. Also we had a separate code for our room. The room was perfect for our needs. Bed was amazingly comfortable. Radiator on the wall which you could turn up or down. Shower was great. You did have a drain smell but that is from the sulphur in the water which you get used to. In our room there was no wardrobe but there were coat hangers by the door. 

Breakfast was ideal. Tea,Coffee and Fruit Juice. Cereal, Apples and Yogurt. A waffle maker which my wife used every morning. Bread and a toaster. Ham, cheese, cucumber,and tomatos all delicately sliced up. Also the staff member used gloves whilst cutting. Hands and fingers were clean. 

All in all a great stay and ideal location and wouldn't hesitate to come back.

Perfect place to stay

We booked one of the cheaper, smaller room and based on the reviews here had low expectations.  We arrived at 12 ish in the afternoon, dropped our bags in the luggage room and sat in the breakfast room to eat our lunch.  The staff acknowledged us, just!

At 3pm our room was available.  It was pretty small (still with a 6ft bed) but clean and functional and I was impressed given what we had paid compared to other hotels in the area.  The bathroom was tiny and the basin was way to close to the toilet but the shower area that looked tiny was actually pretty good when the curtain was pulled.  The rooms could have done with a tray for boots as we had to leave ours in the shower or outside the room because after walking in the snow the grit and the melting snow got everywhere!

The location was brilliant, we used the Greyline bus to bus stop no 3 (they didn't charge extra for 3) and it was an easy 10 min walk on heated streets.  It was also a short walk to the Harbour.  

Breakfast was excellent given it was advertised as light continental.  Toast, ham, cheese, jams, yogurt and cereals and a waffle maker with syrup and whipped cream.  There is only a 2 slice toaster, this could do with being a 4 slice as there was always a queue.  Also they could do with putting on a new pot of coffee as they put the first one out as we were waiting 10 mins for more coffee.  The other issue was they say breakfast is served from 7am but it wasn't out properly till 10 past which was a problem when needing to leave at 7.30am

I have no idea why they say tea and coffee is available all day as it was always empty or cold and was probably just what was left over from breakfast as it didn't seem to get refreshed during the day.  Same with the milk.

All this said I would happily stay here again.

Really good cheap central hotel.

Stayed at this hotel very disappointed bad breakfast room terrible very small blinds all broken and dirty bathroom dirty looking needs revamp no staff to greet you was promised a kettle for brewing up had to keep going to breakfast room to borrow it this hotel 8s not a 4c star its more a 2 stAr very dated tired and has no class I would not stay again the bed my brother had was absolutely disgusting he had no sleep at all breakfast very basic indeed staff not sociable don't speak to you. Very disappointed with my stay there the town and Iceland itself very beautiful but extremely expensive.

Hotel Hilda was situated quite centrally. Our room was on the ground floor. The room was very small. Bathroom room door could not be close except with force, otherwise the bathroom was ok. Our window was high, it had a roller curtain which we were not able to pull down for the night. The best part of the room were the beds, very comfortable with down cover .That was good because it was very cold. I wanted to have a smaller pillow but there was nobody in reception so I left a note for the person who took care of the breakfast. On the note I wrote about the bathroom door, the window the pillow and complained of the coldness of the room. In the email I got home before the trip it read that the reception is open between 9 am-5pm, we never saw anybody there! Also we were promised coffee/tea available in the breakfast room during our stay. There was not even hot water in the breakfast room.

With the booking confirmation we were told that the reception is manned from 9.00-17.00 if I'm not mistaken And we could leave our luggage in the luggage storage room. 

Checkin started at 15.00 and we went to the hotel at 13:30 to check if we could check in early or leave the luggage there. Hotel main door is accessible with a code and the hotel room too. Inside we find a note stating that THERE IS NO RECEPTIONIST IN THE HOTEL. And that luggage is left at your own risk in the luggage room (that's always open).

Internet was also not working on the first day.

Good price for the location

The location is very good as far as accessibility,  You can easily walk to a lot of restaurants, and it's not too much farther to the main downtown area that has many more restaurants and various things you might want to see.  That said, I was rather appalled by the state of the room, the apparent lack of staff, and the joke of a breakfast. The only amenity was a hair dryer.

The entire time I was there, I only saw one employee, once.  He was not dressed like an employee and was surly, so it wasn't until he put out the coffee pitchers that I realized he WAS an employee.  They give you a code to get in the building, and another for your room, and you better hope you have no questions and don't need anything, because no one is EVER at the reception desk.  

The room was tiny and needed a good cleaning.  The bathroom was so ridiculously small and poorly designed that it was difficult to wash your face (the tiny sink was directly under a shelf).  The shower was tiny and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a while.  There was some sort of debris on my mattress.

The breakfast room is downstairs (I missed it the first morning - the sign is on the door leading there - but the door was not somewhere we were likely to see from our room).  The breakfast consisted of some cereal, some orange juice, some coffee in a pitcher and some hot water set out in a pitcher.  That was it. Even that you won't see until the surly guy with headphones bothers to put it out (not early).

You do not have access to a microwave, electric kettle, or refrigerator, which would have been helpful, considering the only "breakfast" option is apparently one kind of cereal.

You can park near the building long enough to drop off your stuff, but the supposed "free" parking they are talking about is full at all hours and never an option.  Your best bet, IF it isn't also full, is a nearby parking garage (you still have to pay but it's less for overnight than the hourly spaces).  Driving and parking in this area is sort of a mess - I recommend walking everywhere.

Overpriced, dirty, and neglected with decent location

Very convenient for city centre, spotlessly clean; simple but adequate breakfast, easy access; beds very comfortable - all in all a very good stay 
Only negatives - light not working in bathroom but bulb was changed when staff notified
